Madeleine McCann: Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Walters And Rape
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY EXPRESS: “MADELEINE: £1M WAR FOR MCCANN INTERVIEW”
“AMERICA’S top chat show hosts are locked in a bidding war for an exclusive interview with the parents of Madeleine McCann. Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters have each pledged £1million in an attempt to get them in front of the TV cameras, it emerged yesterday”
Winfrey and Walters - the Pope and Queen Mother of Ameican TV chatter…
Do those shows take advertising? They do. What will the ad-breaks induce viewers to buy? What is the point of the interview? The McCanns cannot discuss the case.
Says the McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell: “We are not in the market for selling Kate and Gerry’s story to the highest bidder. And we are not impressed by big names. We talk to media from all over the world”
But money is important. The fighting fun is running low
DAILY MAIL: “Kate and Gerry McCann in £1million deal to tell all to Oprah Winfrey”
“Kate and Gerry McCann are at the centre of a bidding war between Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters.
“Both celebrities are desperate to land an exclusive deal for the couple to talk about their missing daughter. If it goes ahead, it will be the largest publicly-known amount ever paid for a broadcast interview”
Says Clarence Mitchell: “We have been approached by representatives for both Oprah and Barbara,” he added. “They want an exclusive interview with Kate and Gerry. We are discussing it but it doesn’t mean we are definitely doing it. Nothing has been agreed”
Why wouldn’t they do it?
PRESS ASSOCIATION: “US chat shows approach McCanns”
“Kate and Gerry McCann have been approached to appear on the Oprah Winfrey show and for an interview with American network ABC, their spokesman has confirmed.
It was reported that the McCanns were at the centre of a bidding war worth £1 million between Winfrey and ABC star Barbara Walters who both want an exclusive interview with the couple.
THE SUN: “Maddie sketch farmer raped girl”
“The gun-toting pig farmer quizzed in the Maddie McCann hunt was once jailed for raping a British teenager — in Praia da Luz. Joaquim Jose Marques, 31, who bears a resemblance to the sketch of a mystery suspect, served five years. Portuguese cops who grilled him twice at his ramshackle farmhouse nearby are now convinced he is NOT the man in the drawing”
NOT the man. So why is he in the papers?
“But we can reveal Marques and a pal carried out a brutal attack on two British girls, aged 17 and 18, after prowling the beach in July 1995 at the resort where Maddie vanished”
A heinous crime for which he was punished. But what has it to do with Madeleine McCann?
DAILY STAR: “MADDIE WEIRDO RAPED TEEN BRIT”
“The gun-toting Portuguese pig farmer quizzed over Madeleine McCann’s disappearance raped a British teenager yards from where the four-year-old vanished. Joaquim Jose Marques put his 18-year-old victim through a horrific late-night sex ordeal while an accomplice targeted her pal”
Eighteen..
“Now locals fear he is the same man pictured on a ‘wanted’ poster issued by the McCanns as they step up the hunt for their daughter”
Local residents, or local reporters? And is “fear” really “hope”?
DAILY MIRROR: “Madeleine McCann suspect spotted ’spying on little boys’”
“Five women holidaymakers - three British and two German - have seen the “strange and disturbed” man in Altura, close to the Portuguese-Spanish border, in the past two weeks. One of the British witnesses noticed him on the beach on January 21 bending down to talk to the boys, aged about four or five.
“Clearly worried, one of the youngsters started shaking his head mid-conversation. Then a woman ran out of a nearby villa, shouting in alarm. She scooped the children up and hurried them away.”
Adults. children. Run, children, run!
DAILY TELEGRAPH (Aus): “Oprah’s $2m bid for Maddie chat”
“Mr Mitchell said the McCanns would only agree to a deal which would widen the search for their daughter. The couple, both doctors, also want to campaign for a better Europe-wide alert system for missing children, based on an American model”
A campaign

My dear Mrs. Bounty. You can’t imagine Maman’s face! She wriggles her nose, whatever “news” I tell her lately and says: “This stinks!”. She’s very outspoken, like what I told you ’round Christmas and she’s doesn’t buy any of the smokescreens and mirrors. If I had more time, I’d tell you in detail, ’cause she can be very funny

Chenier, you said below:
“No one in the press seems keen to answer the question of why they should imagine a man jailed for raping an 18 year old woman might be interested in a 3, going on 4, year old girl.
“No one in the press seems keen on noticing that the Portuguese appear to do rather better than we do at finding and successfully prosecuting a rapist.
“No one, apart from the journos, seems to ‘fear’ that he is the same man, which may be pissing him off a bit.
“After all, a rock solid alibi, put together with a ‘wanted’ poster identifying him as a probable paedophile kidnapper, should provide some capital for the pig farm…”
___________
I have a question I haven’t seen answered or may have overlooked - was he the same man seen lurking around the resorts by several different people?
As for the Portugese being able to find and successfully prosecuting a rapist - something tells me that he and his friend were not hard to find since two teenagers were involved who could readily identify them. But as for their success in finding missing children over there and adults over the years may I suggest you do what I did quite some time ago and do a quick search on the net and google “Portugal - Missing People”!
Onc again it is all in the eye of the beholder but when I read the accompanying story that came out with the picture of the person seen lurking around to it asked if that person would please come forward if they were innocent or whoever ended up not coming forward then one could presume they could have something to do with the young child’s disappearance. But one may ask themselves, considering Portugal has no register of their sex offenders, why the police wanted to go to ask him questions.
I myself don’t believe for a second the new Investigator has shoved under the rug in his investigation that this was not a possible abduction case. One forgets he was the lead investigator in very bad children abuse scandal(s) over there a few years ago.
———————————————————————–
I really don’t know.
You may care to bear in mind that the man has allegedly been spotted in Chile with Madeleine visiting a museum, as well as working in Gibralter.
Men in Morocco shown the sketch are reported as ‘laughing almost hysterically’, pointing out that there are a million men who look like like that in Morocco.
I do appreciate that Clarrie claims that this sketch is so good that anyone who knows the man will recognise him, but the people with the most experience of north African men, ie north african men, flatly disagree.
So who are you going to believe?
As for finding and successfully prosecuting men for rape, I suggest you take a look at the figures here; barely 6% of cases reported to police end in conviction in England and Wales. A teenage girl claiming that she has been raped here may well be able to identify her attacker; very few rapists are total strangers. A successful prosecution is a very different matter.
I am not aware of any evidence that a man attacking a teenage girl is likely to be a paedophile; if you know of any evidence it would be good if you cited it.
Equally, if you have any researched evidence as to child and adult abductions in Portugal it would be helpful if you cited that too. Most people who go missing go missing because they want to. If you really imagine that there is some vile gang abducting people in Portugal you shouldn’t be wasting your time posting on the web, you should be providing the information to the proper authorities. As you yourself have noted, the Portuguese police have conducted important investigations into child abuse; why are you not providing this information to Mr Rebello?
And why are you objecting to the Portuguese police checking again on an individual? Surely you should be glad that the Portuguese police not only check, but double check?
As for your bizarre belief that anyone who did not come forward and identify themselves to the press officer of two private inviduals must be presumed to be guilty of involvement in the abduction of a small child, I can only suggest that you pray, for your own sake, that you never live in a country where that assumption is applied….

So it was Clarrie who got the Mirror forum closed down! Don’t know why it is damaging to the British Government though:

The adviser of McCann uses the services of the government to supervise journalists and Net surfers
Clarence Mitchell, the adviser in public relations and spokesperson of McCann, continuous to use the services of control British in spite of, to have officially resigned of its position of director of the Unit of Monitoring of the Media at Gordon Brown. The charge is made by a source of the Ministry for the Interior (Home Office) which affirms that the outgoing director would have called upon his old services in order to supervise several journalists but also the behavior of the Net surfers on a list of forums and blogs considered as “highly harmful” for the image of McCann and the British government.
Clarence Mitchell, former journalist of Daily Express and the BBC, with summer indicated by Foreign Office like liaison officer between the media and the parents of Madeleine. It is him which had organized, via the respective British embassies, the visits of McCann in the Vatican, in Madrid, Berlin, Amsterdam and Rabat.
The monitoring and the control of the media became, since the first days, an important aspect of the work of Clarence Mitchell. During the stay of McCann with Praia da Luz, it is him which had decided to separate the journalists according to their nationality: initially British, in the last Portuguese.
Today, the public relation campaign of McCann passes, more than ever, by the control of the public opinion: during the last days several forum and blogs were closed on the other side of the channel because of the comments “against McCann”. It is the case of the forum of the Mirror newspaper which, without any warning, with unobtrusive all the comments with the business after the Net surfers started to discuss interference of the Ministry for the Interior.
The Net surfers, with British majority, did not lower the arms and the exchanges of comments are now made in a free forum called The Three Arguidos (Three Suspects).

——————————————-
I have seen answered on here earlier today or yesterday, that he admitted that he was the one who knocked on Mrs Cooper’s door. Yet both Mrs C and Clarrie immediately came out with statements after the tabloids “revealed” that he’d been “discovered” and had actually been interviewed already by the PJ in May that this was not the man that she’d seen …. this they did before his admission that it was himself who knocked on the door! A little/large/oopsie “faux-pas” of “jumping the gun” there I’d say, they could have kept this going for quite a few weeks to come, yet they put their own feet into it ….. ONCE AGAIN!
I think that any more of their identikits drawn up by professionals are going to be laughed at by many … it’s a case of cry wolf one too many times ….. people ignore the stupidity after that I’m afraid!

The glorification of the parents by the parents is what is what is so wrong.
An admission of sorrow, remorse and regret could have been timely, but is it too late now?
Choices were made, eventually the consequences must be faced. They have been by Madeleine, but she had the choice denied her (if she was indeed abducted). Eventually parental responsibility must be addressed, but until it is….

It’s all Gerry and Kate, Gerry and Kate ,isn’t it?
We still no almost nothing about Madeleine, yet more facts would surely help in the alleged search for her.
For instance, she’s said to be exceptionally tiny for her age. Why hasn’t this been widely publicised? We heard everything about the coloboma but hardly anything about this other unusual feature.
January 26th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
I think the way they are thinking is that they’ll look into anything that brings in money. They understand that they can’t do Oprah because they are still arguidos BUT they can do a documentary because they’ve already done so and not governed under the same laws. IMHO of course.

Absolutely right. But also if there is a legacy to be left it’s Madeleine’s legacy and sod all to do with them in - any shape or form (as Clarrie would incorrectly put it).
Simon 542
Why would they want to do a documentary? If they think Madeleine is still alive and being hid somewhere, surely they wouldn’t bother with such things?
——————————-
Because they need the money for their fund, although what use the fund is now? Now, that is, because they don’t belive she’s alive any more. Close the fund then.

I agree that it is very odd - very hard to understand. They say they wouldn’t be prepared to take part in a chat show, because they are still arguidos. So that’s all that is stopping them…?
It’s so hard to understand that it’s distasteful.
January 26th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Oh Simon, so glad you’re here
, was beginning to feel like I’m on Mars
Quite frankly, what is a documentary going to help? All the e-mails that went practically world-wide, the balloons, the wrist bands, the t-shirts, the million posters that are being put almost everywhere … what have they helped? …. zippo IMO!
If they think Madeleine is being held like a princess in a fairy castle, they didn’t have TV in fairy castles, and they wont see the documentary …. waste of time, diversion, etc. etc.
The truth will out one day, and Madeleine’s memory will be laid to rest peacefully and with dignity. (I’m confident of this).
IMHO

Perhaps he was not lurking, perhaps he feels some remorse for his crimes and was doing what he said he was.

McCanns discuss new documentary
Sat Jan 26, 2008 6:22pm GMT Email | Print | [+]
LONDON (Reuters) - The parents of Madeleine McCann missing in Portugal since May are holding talks with broadcasters about a second TV documentary on their daughter’s disappearance, a spokesman for the couple said on Saturday.(…)
“We’ve talked to a few broadcasters and one or two are minded to look at it,” the McCann’s spokesman Clarence Mitchell told Reuters of the documentary proposal. “We’re not selling Kate and Gerry — we’re trying to produce something positive.
“If Madeleine were never found and if some sort of legacy for her was a system which would mean that no other family was ever in this terrible position again, then at least some good would have come out of this.”
Mitchell confirmed the McCanns had been approached to do interviews with U.S. broadcasters Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters, but the couple’s status as formal suspects in Portugal prohibited them from taking part.
In November the McCanns took part in a BBC documentary about the disappearance of the youngster.(…)

When the mccanns went back to the UK the day after they were made arguidos thye have been warned their return would delay and complicate the investigation.
It is their entire fault if this sad story is still going on….
Why did they go back to the UK?
1) fear of being convicted
2) the Twins would have been put under the custody of the portuguese social services
They were free to go,though….but now? it drags on….eventually and SOON the PJ is going to shut them up and behind bars and this will be in portugal…..thay will have time to learn portuguese and make lovely tapas……

I am lost without the Mirror Madeleine McCann Forum. I’m in the U.S. Would some Anork person please post here what the mood is in the UK and Portugal with regard to this case? Does it look like charges eventually will be brought against the McCanns?
————————————————————–
I very much doubt that any forum can reflect the mood of a population which ranges from total disinterest to obsessive fascination.
The McCanns are running low on money, and their PR stunts are unlikely to produce anything in the way of significant funds.
Clarrie, having claimed that there is a bidding war over the McCanns ’story’, is now denying that there is a bidding war over the McCanns’ ’story’.
The tabloids here are unlikely to want to repeat the News of the World’s rather expensive and distinctly unexclusive ‘exclusive’ last weekend.
Metodo 3’s operatives are said to be combing Morocco, each clutching a cuddlecat which they are told to squeeze when the size of their task daunts them, and no, I am not making that up.
There has been a wonderful breakthrough; Madeleine has been spotted with the dirty, unkempt, unshaven, creepy evil kidnapper so poignantly described by Mrs Cooper, visiting a small museum in Chile devoted to the life and works of a Nobel Prize winning lady poet, and no, I am not making that up, either.
That appears to be the state of play here in England…
