Madeleine McCann: Tabloid Snap, Metodo 3 PD and McCanns Innocent
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR: “I’M NOT GUILTY”
“A loner who looks like a drawing of a ‘creepy’ Madeleine McCann suspect has denied any links to her disappearance”
Joaquim Agostinho says: “It’s not me in the picture. I accept that the drawing looks like me”
The Mirror reports: “The former cockle picker, who lives in Altura, 90 miles from Praia da Luz, added: ‘I did not kill Madeleine and I’ve never been to Praia da Luz. I cannot even drive’”
But still his picture is in the paper in connection with a story about a missing child. Fingers are pointed
MADELEINE in Chile. What news of that? “Yesterday, police ruled out a “Madeleine” sighting in Chile after the girl was identified as American Haylee Dreyer, six”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE – Amazing lookalike: ‘I did not kidnap and kill her’”
Mr Agostinho looks like an artist’s impression of man whom British tourist Gail Cooper says she saw acting hanging around Praia da Luz. He is the “oddball”
Page 11: “DRIFTER MATCHES NEW MADELEINE SUSPECT”
Matches. Like in a game of snap? Snap! Snap! Snap!
“Investigators want to quiz a Portuguese drifter suspected of involvement in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Detectives working for the youngster’s parents are to question Joaquim Agostinho, 42, in the resort of Altura”
Does he have to speak with the McCanns detectives?
“Mr Agostinho, who lives in Altura, said yesterday: ‘I did not kill Madeleine and I’ve never been to Praia da Luz. I cannot even drive.’ Altura is close to the Spanish border and detectives from Metodo 3 – the agency working for the McCanns – were last night travelling there from their headquarters in Barcelona”
Again, does he have to speak with private detectives?
THE SUN: “McCANN COPS QUIZ SUSPECT LOOKALIKE”
“Detectives are to quiz a drifter who looks uncannily like a mystery suspect in Maddie McCann’s disappearance. Joaquim Agostinho, 42, denies he is the creepy man depicted in a sketch issued by parents Kate and Gerry McCann
“But Metodo 3, the Spanish private investigators hired by the McCanns, are taking the possibility seriously”
Is Metodo 3 now a police force?
A source close to Metodo 3 says: “We are going to be talking to this man as a priority, to establish if he is the one Mrs Cooper saw”
What of the McCanns?
“COPS now accept Kate and Gerry, both 39, may be innocent in Maddie’s disappearance, it has emerged. They have so far clung to just one theory — that Maddie was accidentally killed and her parents disposed of her body. Now they are taking seriously the alternative that she was snatched from the holiday apartment last May — which Kate and Gerry have always insisted must have happened”
DAILY MAIL: “Is this drifter the man in Madeleine drawing?”
Mr Agostinho says no. He delivers newspapers for a living. He says he is innocent
Metodo 3 are looking to speak with him
DAILY STAR: “MADDIE: THREE MEN RULED OUT – McCanns’ new hopes shattered”
It’s not Joaquim Jose Marques – police have ruled him out; and the Star was so certain
It’s not the girl in Chile – she’s a girl on holiday with her family
It’s not Joaquim Agostinho – he says it’s not him
METRO: “Twins play ‘find Maddie’”
“Leading world sex crimes expert Ray Wyre” has met with Kate and Gerry McCann
He sees the McCanns’ twins children. Wyre tells the paper: “They said they were going to go and find the monster that took Maddie. Then they dashed off to play the game. It’s a sad story, but it is healthy that Madeleine remains a real presence in their lives”
“A spokesman for the McCanns denied the story”
Madeleine McCann: No news is still news

Brit Abroad
WHERE IS true investigative journalism?
(Are the World in Action team still around? Have not lived in UK for nine years but used to think they did some great stuff over the years. Do you have anything similar there these days?)
How do some of these reporters write such sensationalistic rubbish? Do Editors sleep well at night?
And of course it all distracts beautifully from the real questions that need to be addressed.

I posted last month ,that 2 reporters from the Brits Media ,complained to a Portuguese collegue ,that they were not allowed to bring some issues to light
And guess who they poist their finger ?
To dear Clarrie !!!
How ,does this man ,as so much power ?
I think ,we have ,to look ,to the HIGH ,that backed the mccs !!

Controversy: Impasse in the investigation for bad collaboration
http://joana-morais.blogspot.com/2008/01/controversy-impasse-in-investigation.html
English do not reply
It’s been more than 20 days since the Public prosecution service and the Judiciary received the notice of reception of the rogatory letters, but the CM knows that, since then, there was no answer from the British authorities regarding the interrogations to the four couples friends of the McCanns. There are still personal objects of Kate and Gerry to apprehend and the whole investigation is being delayed.
The dozens of questions to be done to these eight potential witnesses were thoroughly prepared by the persons in charge of the PJ at the head of the case – always in articulation and with the agreement of English investigators. The process was also stalled for months, so that all the legal roads were followed in the sending of the letters, through the General Prosecution Service of the Portuguese Republic.
The documents followed finally in the beginning of the year – and, at the middle of this month, the investigators of the PJ were already finding the silence of England odd, as the CM advanced at the time. Now, almost in February, we know that there is no green light to explore the different and obvious contradictions between the friends of Maddie’s parents, the first time in which they were heard, in what concerns the night of the crime.
The secret of justice is already secured by the judge up to September, but the whole eventual accusation of the Public prosecution service depends on the interrogations, which might be crucial. For the reason that, after the PJ hears the friends, only then they can prepare a series of questions to the couple – in function of what the other four couples will say. And as for the objects – between them is the diary where Kate describes Maddie’s behaviour and the relation at times difficult with her oldest daughter.
Meanwhile, the Spanish detectives employed by the McCanns continue their hunt of persons with similarities to the photo-fit spread more than a week ago. After the false suspect who received the journalists at his home of the Algarve with gun threats, in the last days it was time of the Spaniards of the enterprise Method 3 move the Altura, in Castro Marim, searching for Joaquim Gomes – another man who has resemblance with the portrait but long ago discarded by the PJ.
In Portugal the ’sightings’ of potential suspects did not take place, but this situation happens again in all Europe and in the North of Africa.

1307 can’t say no
Well, I think that is all rather unfair.
Seems to me Tony took constructive action.
He did not have information to pursue other courses.
I have always admired the action he took.
He is a public person, unlike most of us who post here.
I think that article is seriously off-point.

Does Mr Bennett bat for the McCanns?
If this man is a qualified solicitor then he would have know that these parents were being investigated for homicide, not simple child neglect. Therefore any summons in the Magistrates Court would have been doomed to failure. There is no way in a complex criminal investigation they were going to allow details of this case to start being unpacked before unqualified magistrates. Details of the evidence against them is precisely what the McCanns want so desperately. Why would they want it so desperately if they were innocent - they would know there cannot be any. So who was trying to give them a helping hand? Mr Bennett! Some may also consider the McCanns would give their eye teeth simply to be prosecuted for child neglect but again any qualified solicitor would have known that such a prosecution was impossible in the UK. The offence of child neglect was committed in Portugal and therefore the UK has no jurisdiction to prosecute them. The UK does have jurisdiction to prosecute them for the much more serious offence of homicide however - by virtue of a clause in the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 which clearly states that any UK citizen who has committed homicide abroad may be prosecuted in the UK. Such prosecutions have gone ahead. It was no good the McCanns thinking rushing back to the UK was going to let them get away with murder - but it was going t let them get away with neglect. However, it seems to me that if the McCanns did not kill Madeleine by assaulting her, then they killed her by neglecting her - so the neglect is part and parcel of the offence of manslaughter by gross negligence in leaving her alone, possibly also, drugged up.
If Mr Bennett does not bat for them - then he is just an attention seeked who “wants his 15 minutes of fame” and in my view, should be ignored.
The question of parents going to the pub and leaving children unattended simply will not be put right by bringing in yet more laws - what difference would this make? The law is already there - you go to the pub and leave your kids and as a result one of them dies - you are on a manslaugher rap. If there is lesser harm - the law is also there - Children and Young Persons Act 1933. This is a social issue. We need to make it clear it is socially unacceptable to leave your kids alone. We need to make it clear the Portuguese way of not dumping their kids in bed but treating their children in an inclusive way and having their meal with the adults is the right way. This is about education. We re-educated the public that it is socially unacceptable to drink and drive by media campaigns. This is the way forward with rotten parents who do not know how to treat their children properly. Simply having yet another law on the statute book would not make a jot of difference.

I’m no expert on the law. Can anyone tell me what the chances are of the McCanns being charged with neglect. That will be the very least they will get away with, will it not?

This is what Tony B tried to do, no? He was told no jurisdiction.

Yes. I am waiting for developments from Portuguese police, not Metodo-3’s silly sketches of “creepy” men. It is infuriating that the British tabloids are taking these ridiculous sketches, sightings and witnesses seriously. I know Madeleine’s name sells papers, but surely someone must say “enough is enough!”

There’s still the fact that Esther McVey has wiped any reference to the McCanns from her blog, yet not written a word in their support.
If she only resigned because of pressure of trying to be an MP (ha! ha! not very likely, spingirl) why not explain all - or at least try to put herself in the best possible light?

**********
Some blame it on the McC’s and their PR/spokesperson[s].
I think the PJ also “leaked” some stories.
All together I blame most and for all the papers for printing a lot of [self-invented] rubbish.
“a source close to” “an unnamed source” “a friend of the family” “a friend of mr X/Y/Z” etc. its all a smokescreen of them [the papers] to hide they just made up the story.
And it seems we all [some more, some lesser] fall into the trap!
Read PatBrown profiler about it, its very interesting.

Doubtful, Poppy. Team McCann would lobby the usual media outlets and Hislop would come under attack from the usual hacks. Ian Hislop dartboards in the Sun, that kind of thing.
