It is ultimately the parents responsibility to govern what their kids watch and buy. If you are a good parent your kid couldnt have access to a gun. Sure you may think kids are resourceful or that things are different. Things will never get so different that being a parent means you don't have to watch your kids and teach them the difference between right and wrong. There is a ratings system in place for a reason. There are clear descriptors for exactly what elements the game presents. All you have to do is be able to read. The resources are there to be able to choose.
