Madeleine McCann: Four, Three Men, DNAboost And Risk
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY STAR: “Cops slam pics of Maddie suspects – Innocent people are put at ‘risk’”
“Four” people who look like the drawings inspired by holidaymaker Gail Cooper have now been questioned by police
So says the Star. Although on closer inspection Jose Marques plus Joaquim Agostinho plus a Portuguese builder in Gibraltar makes three, not four
Celebrity criminologist Francisco Moita Flores says: “It is manipulation and propaganda.” No, not the Star’s reporting, rather the sketches
DAILY MAIL: “Fourth man questioned in Maddie e-fit probe”
When is an e-fit a drawing? Compare and contrast
The Mail sees the Portuguese builder questioned and then freed. “At least” three other men have been questioned
THE SUN: “SUPER DNA ‘WILL CLEAR McCANNS – They welcome new-style forensic tests”
A tiny sample is, reportedly, found in the McCanns’ Renault Scenic hire car. How did it get there? From her clothes, say the McCanns. “Another theory was that Maddie’s younger brother and sister may have similar DNA,” says the Sun
And there’s a new test. It’s called DNAboost. DNAboost “can separate or ‘clarify’ profiles and unravel tiny samples”
With DNAboost what you thought had gone comes back with a bang!
DAILY MIRROR (online): “McCann pics fury”
Always the “fury”
Police in Portugal “claim Kate and Gerry McCann are hindering the probe into missing Madeleine by releasing sketches of the possible kidnapper.
One detective says the drawings were too vague and could “identify dozens or hundreds of people”
“But McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell hinted more sketches could be on the way ‘if we get any more information’”
THE INDEPENDENT: “Alastair Campbell: The Cudlipp Lecture”
“In an era of more pages, more space, more access, more talk, there is less said and done that is truly memorable. Even in Dacre’s apologia he could only draw on Stephen Lawrence – again - as the story where he felt the Mail made an impact and did some good. Similarly, in his Mactaggart Lecture Jeremy Paxman said the BBC constantly pointed to Planet Earth as evidence of good TV combining with good ratings, but did so precisely because it is a rarity. And with every front page screaming headline that doesn’t quite deliver the big story, every exclusive that isn’t, every whooshing breaking news that isn’t really breaking news at all, every new twist in the McCann case that isn’t a new twist at all, the public gets a little wiser every time”
We recognise the spin, says Mr Campbell – “Media spin to fill media space.” And we might even recognise the irony…

It seems they dont really care. They seem to be sure that they are untouchable. The alleged lack of response from the inexperienced ex-teacher we have in the role of Home Secretary is highly indicative.

The problem I have with the lack of contrition is the way it looks very much as if they are positioning themselves to avoid any accusation of incompetence.
They speak as if they have been advised by lawyers - and have since day 1. They regret ‘not being with her when she was taken’. If they could roll back time they would have looked about for abductors hiding in bushes…they were ‘led astray by the quiet nature of the place’.
The learning they’d take from the experience (as Kate said whn she was asked in the Womans Hour interview) would be to have better cross border controls etc (I thought the learning might be, dont leave your kids unprotected).
Its the attitude that everyone else is responsible for their children’s safety.
Overall, I have a problem with their defensive attitude - its been there right from the start.

Val and Brandon
This Anorak thing is a whole new lifestyle, isn’t it? My children are patiently amused when I talk about it.

No, not at all. I stayed up late to do some work on the computer and couldn’t resist going to Anorak for a peek. By 5 am I was pretty spaced out!

Gerry’s blog is still weird
“Gerry’s Blog/Diary
Day 262 - 20/01/2008
Today we have released drawings of a man who needs to be eliminated from the investigation to find Madeleine. A witness, Gail Cooper, who was holidaying in Praia da Luz shortly before we arrived, saw him on several occasions. She found the man, who claimed to be collecting for an orphanage, very intimidating. After interviewing Gail, our private investigators commissioned a forensic sketch by a FBI trained artist. The man has many similarities in looks and clothing he was wearing to the description of the man given by Gail Cooper.”
So if I have understood that correctly, the sketch of the man seen by Gail Cooper is similar to the description of the man seen by Gail Cooper ?
I assume they mean by JT, but why haven’t they updated or corrected it in the last 9 days? I have just refreshed it yet again and it is definitely as pasted above.
The lie about the pyjamas and JT is still there in the next paragraph.

Just read your JusticeforMaddie blogspot, thanks .
Don”t know if you also read some of the comments but they too warrant reading. One in particular refers to OB and the Waiters ( I said they would be important!!!!) statements
that he was hardly at the table all evening. Also, one of the calls Gerry recieved on his mobile
said “the coast is clear” meaning it was O>K> for Kate to go to the apartment to raise the alarm because the Apartment had been cleaned, apparently. Obviously, we don”t know how
true this is, like everything else, it”s just speculation, at the moment.

I was just going to correct that! Yes, I don’t think they did anything to Madeleine other than by leaving her/them alone in the room and at risk.
I do still favour ’spotted, stalked, snatched’ as what happened but it would have been a lot harder to perpetrate that crime (if thats what happened) if the children hadn’t been alone.
++++++++++++++++
I think that a more apt word would be “impossible” if the children hadn’t been alone.

Maybe, but don’t you feel really spaced out when you don’t get enough sleep?
By the way, I haven’t seen Chenier’s name for the last couple of days - hope she’s OK. Have you seen any posts from her?

I also think that the PJ are trying to ensure that they have a cast iron case, because they feel that the British authorities are going to seize any opportunity to find a technicality or loophole. My own bet is that the PJ have a pretty cast iron case now - don’t know exactly what charges there will be, but they seem very determined to have them back in Portugal. Perhaps they’re running short of prison doctors?

You’ve told me when you do the housework - now tell me, when do you sleep??
January 29th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Salomon,
I am not sure it would have been possible to name the friends suspects simply because of descrepancies in their testimonies. Even if it had been allowed, it would be risky for Amaral’s reputation for one, and for the whole case. The PJ were already under fire. If they were accused of chosing the wrong suspects, it could discredited them completely.
Even if charging the MCs is a hopeless attempt in spite of the evidence they have, it’s the best they can do (if the evidence is enough of course). When they do that, they will be allowed to speak and to explain themselves. I expect the media of the world will be interested. And it will be much harder for the press to stifle the news. (Also, if they can make money with the case, they will). I guess the lawyers will be excellent at their job, but it won’t look too good from a PR point of view.
Do the Portuguese have an international recourse in case they think the case is unduly stifled in any way?

If they had, and still did, I believe that other peoples perception of them would have been much different.
But as you say - they didn’t.
