Madeleine McCann: Four, Three Men, DNAboost And Risk
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY STAR: “Cops slam pics of Maddie suspects – Innocent people are put at ‘risk’”
“Four” people who look like the drawings inspired by holidaymaker Gail Cooper have now been questioned by police
So says the Star. Although on closer inspection Jose Marques plus Joaquim Agostinho plus a Portuguese builder in Gibraltar makes three, not four
Celebrity criminologist Francisco Moita Flores says: “It is manipulation and propaganda.” No, not the Star’s reporting, rather the sketches
DAILY MAIL: “Fourth man questioned in Maddie e-fit probe”
When is an e-fit a drawing? Compare and contrast
The Mail sees the Portuguese builder questioned and then freed. “At least” three other men have been questioned
THE SUN: “SUPER DNA ‘WILL CLEAR McCANNS – They welcome new-style forensic tests”
A tiny sample is, reportedly, found in the McCanns’ Renault Scenic hire car. How did it get there? From her clothes, say the McCanns. “Another theory was that Maddie’s younger brother and sister may have similar DNA,” says the Sun
And there’s a new test. It’s called DNAboost. DNAboost “can separate or ‘clarify’ profiles and unravel tiny samples”
With DNAboost what you thought had gone comes back with a bang!
DAILY MIRROR (online): “McCann pics fury”
Always the “fury”
Police in Portugal “claim Kate and Gerry McCann are hindering the probe into missing Madeleine by releasing sketches of the possible kidnapper.
One detective says the drawings were too vague and could “identify dozens or hundreds of people”
“But McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell hinted more sketches could be on the way ‘if we get any more information’”
THE INDEPENDENT: “Alastair Campbell: The Cudlipp Lecture”
“In an era of more pages, more space, more access, more talk, there is less said and done that is truly memorable. Even in Dacre’s apologia he could only draw on Stephen Lawrence – again - as the story where he felt the Mail made an impact and did some good. Similarly, in his Mactaggart Lecture Jeremy Paxman said the BBC constantly pointed to Planet Earth as evidence of good TV combining with good ratings, but did so precisely because it is a rarity. And with every front page screaming headline that doesn’t quite deliver the big story, every exclusive that isn’t, every whooshing breaking news that isn’t really breaking news at all, every new twist in the McCann case that isn’t a new twist at all, the public gets a little wiser every time”
We recognise the spin, says Mr Campbell – “Media spin to fill media space.” And we might even recognise the irony…
Madeleine McCann: A media feeding frenzy

It’s about this time of day that i like to paint myself blue and run up and down in front of the beleaguered Mcforces shouting about sniffer dogs, time lines and jemmied shutters.

Not that I know of, I was just trying to draw a comparison and because of the dearth of
reliable info from our own Press, perhaps we can be more informed from Spain……..what do you think.?

El Mundo is Spanish. I don’t think there’s a Portuguese newspaper with the same name. Or is there?

Goord Morning.
I suppose it depends on the source whether these claims are believable, do we have anyone here from Portugal who knows someone who can substantiate this claim. If the story came
from Horas it would be less believable than if it came from El Mundo which apparently
is a more respected Newspaper.

The mention of porridge reminds me of how horrified I was as a child by the picture of the lion and the bees on the Golden Syrup tin. Hadn’t remembered that for ages.

Garth’s translated document
Administrator: There is no point to be made. Tripe like that is unacceptable. Find a better translator or do not bother. Few readers here are going to wade through that language treacle. I and the Moderators have to and it was painful beyond anything acceptable. I accept Garth’s first and last letter theorem. But in the case he used the syntax is correct. In the babelfish, or whatever translation system was used, there was no logic or sense in it. It remains unacceptable and I will not argue the point. It would be unwise for others to do so. The other point is; I will not allow my or others’ time to be distracted by nonsense like this. Far too much time has been spent on it already. Exercise sensible judgement or I will stop it.-agw

Re the garbage translations…
They are actually hard to read and make sense of at times. Much harder than the power of the human mind post that Garth has just posted.
I guess Garth’s post was a lot easier to read because although the spelling was all to pot it was gramatically correct? Some of the translation software seems to be happy to get all of the words in the translation somewhere, the ordering of the words seem to be not important?
I guess a little “balance” is called for? If we convert something and it looks like complete garbage then in fairness to the Mods and Admins we ought not to post it? At busy times M&A may need to read lots and just make snap decisions about whether something is suitable or not?
Hmm… mind you, if they applied the does this post look like garbage snap decisions to some of our posts this place would be a lot quieter?

Good Morning, just idly checking to find today,s News and surprised to find we are still posting from the same thread(is that the right word?)
Is “This is London” owned by the Daily Mail? because Firestar posted the same article last night to which I added a comment. I still think the Press is becoming more anti McCann
and is just as fed up with all these “sightings” as we and the general public are.

The SUN
“Family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the McCanns, both 39, of Rothley, Leics, want the interviews to happen soon so the hunt can move on.”

The hunt? for what? I just cant believe this git is still playing his “make believe” games….If the “poor” parents want to have the interview,,ehy dont they go to portugal and rally COOPERATE with the PJ????
oh…I see…are they scared NOT to go back to the uk then?

Love it!
Actually, at the risk of being slammed out of existence, I do have a certain sympathy with the point that Garth is trying to make with the rubbish babelfish translation. But I have explained my thoughts on the subject before and won’t bother repeating them here.

I’ve seen that before and I think its great. A good insight into language / spelling /comprehension! However I wouldn’t like to have to read it everyday….

Re the alleged letters and Jacqui Smith….
Is there an official Portuguese source that will answer a straightforward question about what letters were sent, and when?
If we had an official on public record response, rather than unattributable media speculation, it would make it much more difficult for individual MP’s to avoid answering questions, without of course looking like they were avoiding answering.
Right now, if you ask your MP they can hide behind the we don’t respond to media speculation excuse.

With all due respect, agw: Somehow a bad babelfish translation from the original article in the Correio da Manhã is still better then only getting the information filtered by the Daily Mail and its “abstract” of the Portuguese article, don’t you think?
I didn’t know that babelfish translations aren’t welcome either. They are not perfect, but better than nothing - in my opinion.
I know that there is a problem with texts and links posted in foreign languages here (because it’s almost impossible for the moderators to always check if they contain libelous aspects). As this is the the rule here, I will of course respect it. It feels a bit strange though, because (although this is an English language site) we are in the world wide web, not the “British web”.
Administrator: That was utter rubbish and beyond the pale.
