Madeleine McCann: Alipio Ribeiro’s Thinks, Clarence Mitchell Knows And A Birthday
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY STAR ON SUNDAY: “MADDIE COPS SAYS SORRY – Police ‘too quick’ “to blame parents”
“A top policeman has sensationally admitted that making Gerry and Kate McCann suspects over their daughter Maddie’s disappearance was too ‘hasty’. Alipio Ribeiro, boss of the Portuguese department in charge of the investigation, dropped his bombshell in a radio interview”
Says Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns spokesman: “Now that the national director of the Policia Judiciaria apparently acknowledges that they should never have been made arguidos, it follows there is no case for them to answer.”
SUNDAY EXPRESS: “POLICE ‘TOO HASTY’ OVER MCCANNS”
“As the couple bravely celebrated the third birthday of their twins, Sean and Amelie, one of Portugal’s most senior detectives admitted that making them suspects had been a “hasty” mistake”
Did Mr Alipio Ribeiro say “mistake” in his radio interview?
Says the paper: “The couple, both 39, said the official’s comments were tantamount to an admission that Portuguese detectives had bungled by centring their investigation on them.”
Says Mr Ribeiro to Portugal’s Radio Renascenca, owned by the Catholic Church:
“At this moment in time and speaking with the experience I have of Portugal’s Public Prosecution Service and the constitution of arguidos, I think there perhaps should have been another assessment before the McCanns were made official suspects.
“I don’t have any doubt about that. The national director of the Policia Judiciaria doesn’t give out orders on the constitution of arguidos but there was a certain hastiness”
Says the paper: “Last night Ribeiro was under growing pressure to stand down as national director of their country’s Policia Judiciaria”. Pressure from, whom?
MAIL ON SUNDAY: “”Police chief: We were too quick to make Gerry and Kate ‘arguidos’”
Says the Mail: “Kate and Gerry McCann’s bid to clear their names over the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine has been given a massive boost after the head of Portugal’s police admitted it had been a mistake to rush into making them official suspects”
Mr McCann says: “We need a breakthrough and this looks like it could be one. It is fantastic news. We still have a long way to go but people in Portugal need to understand what has been happening and what we have been going through. We know it will take the police a long time to accept what has been happening is wrong but it is an important step towards that”
Says the McCanns’ lawyer in Portugal, Carlos Pinto de Abreu: “Many people who may have vital information have possibly not come forward as they wrongly suspected the McCanns”
What about that huge reward, and doing the right thing? People may be deterred from coming forward for fear of being named in the media and questioned by Metodo 3, the McCann’s private investigators. But let us not speculate
SUNDAY PEOPLE: “MADDIE U-TURN - EXCLUSIVE Cops admit mistake on twins’ birthday”
“Kate and Gerry McCann threw a birthday bash for their twins yesterday - as a top cop admitted it was WRONG to name them as suspects over missing Maddie”
Well, Policia Judiciaria “boss” Alipio Ribeiro, said the police acted too hasilty. “Ribeiro last night faced calls to resign over the astonishing U-turn” – although from whom, the paper does not bother to say
Say the McCanns: “The support we have had from around the world has been amazing. It’s helped maintain our strength and hope and this has helped the search for our precious Madeleine. We believe there is a very good chance she is still alive. She deserves the love and security of her family. She needs to be back home with her mummy and daddy, brother and sister”
THE GUARDIAN: “Police chief says ‘we were too hasty’ in naming McCanns as suspects”
“In an interview to be aired on Portuguese radio today, Alípio Ribeiro, the national director of the Polícia Judiciária, will concede that police may have acted too soon in making Kate and Gerry McCann formal suspects, known in Portugal as arguidos. His comments were interpreted last night by the McCanns as a tacit admission that the police were wrong to name them as being involved in the disappearance of their four-year-old daughter”

This will be the PJ who are not spending over £50K per month of public donations plus Brian Kennedy’s money making sure their misunderstanding and innocent explanations are clearly understood by an increasingly incredulous public?

Peter O, you flatter yourself, I care not what your opinion is, it is the truth and justice for Madeleine that matters.
++++++++++++++
Declare your interests Sledgehammer. Who or what do you represent? Why do you think you have more knowledge than anyone else here?
As I said before and I’ll restate again, neither you nor your kin are overly concerned with Madeleine’s fate being uncovered, you’re more concerned with ensuring the full facts are never disclosed, in my opinion. Evidence of this is clearly provided every time Clarence, or a source close to……, speaks etc.
February 3rd, 2008 at 10:43 am
jo, can you supply the relevant “”facts”", apart from Mr. & Mrs. McCann, which I think we all agree is a no contest.

“If the PJ lift their arguido status THEN they will be forced to answer to further questioning ANd go back to portugal, dont you think?”
The most that could then happen is that their bail conditions would be lifted, and they could only be interviewed, on a voluntary basis as witnesses. “Arguido” is the equivalent of “interview under caution” in that specific.
Which means that anything said in an interview NOT conducted as “Arguido” wouldn’t be admissable in Court.
So, no…once Arguido status is lifted, they can’t be compelled back to Portugal, because their bail conditions would be lifted, and it’s only by varying those conditions that they could be compelled….
And if they were to go to Portugal, they couldn’t be compelled to be interviewed (and, bluntly, given what we’ve seen of PJ interviewing tactics, I’m damend if I’d go near them without a lawyer present).
And if they were interviewed, the contents couldn’t subsequently be used against them in Court.
So, try as you might to put a positive spin for the PJ on this - you can’t.

But isn’t the McCann’s deepest and most often repeated wish that they could return to Portugal to find their daughter ,and do all it takes to achieve that - leaving ‘no stone unturned’.
Or is this another set of parents who have lost a child over there?

My question is:who will open the Pandora box first?
*************
We are very similar thinking, but I ask myself who was it that built the Pandora’s box, and why did they bring it to PDL, and leave it there for Madeleine to open? Then to think she was possibly stuffed into that box and buried in it. So maybe your question could be “who will open the Pandora box next?”
For those a little confused, Jo and I are being metaphorical. There is not really a Pandora’s Box —— but there is a Blue Bag.
For the McCanns, its possible children were merely objects to be used. Not much different than regarding them as an investment. Something to further improve the McCann’s station in life.
Buy low, sell high! Were the McCanns interested in making money off of their children. That is the first little item in the Pandora’s Box.
And they are succeeding, big-time. The believed dead Madeleine is paying their mortgage! Isn’t that so fitting and appropriate?
Online Etymology Dictionary
mortgage (n.)
1390, from O.Fr. morgage (13c.), mort gaige, lit. “dead pledge” (replaced in modern Fr. by hypothèque), from mort “dead” + gage “pledge;” so called because the deal dies either when the debt is paid or when payment fails. O.Fr. mort is from V.L. *mortus “dead,” from L. mortuus, pp. of mori “to die” (see mortal). The verb is first attested 1467.

Peter O, thank you I do more than you of that there is no doubt. People who jump to conclusions are invariably wrong and their judgement suspect, as you are well aware.
+++++++++++++
In which case you fall into my second category and can’t be trusted.
Madeleine was an innocent three year old girl went she went “missing”. In my opinion, someone(s) close to her, or her close to her family, knows rather more about the events leading up to and following Madeleine’s disappearance than has yet come to light. You, and others of your kin, appear to have not the slightest interest in Madeleine’s fate.
——————————————————————
On the contrary. I think that maybe why we are questioning the PJ?
Come on Peter get out of that barrell!

Me thinks you have misunderstood the rules of engagement? It’s the PJ who questions the suspects and not the other way around.

You’re a fool if you expect anyone to take you seriously when you come here and hide behind anonymity whilst declaring that you know more than others. Declare your interest and then people may take you seriously.

Responses are so predicatble and missed the point completely.
Better to keep quiet for a few days - I should advise Clarence and his emplyers.
Totally misreporting and sensationalist headlines as usual (to sell newspapers).
I’m looking forward to the full report so we can determine the context.
Just remember:-
Parents have a duy of care for their children.
Ask the question, in this case, did the parents deliver that duty of care?
If they did not, what was the consequence - did the child suffer as a result?
Never ming portuguese legal status, which resulted in the police action - in a legal framework being ‘perhaps a little hasty’ as it sent the suspects scuttling away and may have played into the hands of the lawyers.
It does not mean the McCanns are declared ‘innocent’, in legal or moral terms.

Forgot to answer about translating links etc….you could install an online translation engine
mine is off the hook, therefore I do it myself (generally quickly but its accurate).Dont worry there will always be someone to translate anyhow.
I am waiting for spanish links on Ribeiro”s declaration now and will translate and forward…
(I must say the spanish media are sick of it,media and people.I can add that 90% believe theyve probably killed Madeleine accidentially. What they really dislike is the fuss being made and over all,al the cash they are making out of a human tragedy…..when you think that the Cortes family is selling the only thing they have, their family house for Mari Luz safe return…it says a lot
