Madeleine McCann: Alipio Ribeiro’s Thinks, Clarence Mitchell Knows And A Birthday
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY STAR ON SUNDAY: “MADDIE COPS SAYS SORRY – Police ‘too quick’ “to blame parents”
“A top policeman has sensationally admitted that making Gerry and Kate McCann suspects over their daughter Maddie’s disappearance was too ‘hasty’. Alipio Ribeiro, boss of the Portuguese department in charge of the investigation, dropped his bombshell in a radio interview”
Says Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns spokesman: “Now that the national director of the Policia Judiciaria apparently acknowledges that they should never have been made arguidos, it follows there is no case for them to answer.”
SUNDAY EXPRESS: “POLICE ‘TOO HASTY’ OVER MCCANNS”
“As the couple bravely celebrated the third birthday of their twins, Sean and Amelie, one of Portugal’s most senior detectives admitted that making them suspects had been a “hasty” mistake”
Did Mr Alipio Ribeiro say “mistake” in his radio interview?
Says the paper: “The couple, both 39, said the official’s comments were tantamount to an admission that Portuguese detectives had bungled by centring their investigation on them.”
Says Mr Ribeiro to Portugal’s Radio Renascenca, owned by the Catholic Church:
“At this moment in time and speaking with the experience I have of Portugal’s Public Prosecution Service and the constitution of arguidos, I think there perhaps should have been another assessment before the McCanns were made official suspects.
“I don’t have any doubt about that. The national director of the Policia Judiciaria doesn’t give out orders on the constitution of arguidos but there was a certain hastiness”
Says the paper: “Last night Ribeiro was under growing pressure to stand down as national director of their country’s Policia Judiciaria”. Pressure from, whom?
MAIL ON SUNDAY: “”Police chief: We were too quick to make Gerry and Kate ‘arguidos’”
Says the Mail: “Kate and Gerry McCann’s bid to clear their names over the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine has been given a massive boost after the head of Portugal’s police admitted it had been a mistake to rush into making them official suspects”
Mr McCann says: “We need a breakthrough and this looks like it could be one. It is fantastic news. We still have a long way to go but people in Portugal need to understand what has been happening and what we have been going through. We know it will take the police a long time to accept what has been happening is wrong but it is an important step towards that”
Says the McCanns’ lawyer in Portugal, Carlos Pinto de Abreu: “Many people who may have vital information have possibly not come forward as they wrongly suspected the McCanns”
What about that huge reward, and doing the right thing? People may be deterred from coming forward for fear of being named in the media and questioned by Metodo 3, the McCann’s private investigators. But let us not speculate
SUNDAY PEOPLE: “MADDIE U-TURN - EXCLUSIVE Cops admit mistake on twins’ birthday”
“Kate and Gerry McCann threw a birthday bash for their twins yesterday - as a top cop admitted it was WRONG to name them as suspects over missing Maddie”
Well, Policia Judiciaria “boss” Alipio Ribeiro, said the police acted too hasilty. “Ribeiro last night faced calls to resign over the astonishing U-turn” – although from whom, the paper does not bother to say
Say the McCanns: “The support we have had from around the world has been amazing. It’s helped maintain our strength and hope and this has helped the search for our precious Madeleine. We believe there is a very good chance she is still alive. She deserves the love and security of her family. She needs to be back home with her mummy and daddy, brother and sister”
THE GUARDIAN: “Police chief says ‘we were too hasty’ in naming McCanns as suspects”
“In an interview to be aired on Portuguese radio today, Alípio Ribeiro, the national director of the Polícia Judiciária, will concede that police may have acted too soon in making Kate and Gerry McCann formal suspects, known in Portugal as arguidos. His comments were interpreted last night by the McCanns as a tacit admission that the police were wrong to name them as being involved in the disappearance of their four-year-old daughter”

Marie Nicholas, the translation, which I supplied in post 190, clearly tells me that Alipio Ribeiro thinks his officers or the prosecutor made a major mistake.

One of the things a good PR person does is to always interpret every situation in a positive manner. Doesn’t matter whether they represent an egg producer, a car manufacturer or two people currently arguidos in a criminal investigation. It has nothing whatsoever to do with establishing the truth. It’s just about placing the most favourable interpretation on any given situation for the client(s) concerned.

More ,Mr. A. Ribeiro ,admited,he was contacted several times by the U.K. Ambassador

Sledgehammer,
If there was an iota of truth in what you are claiming then I can say with absolute certainly it would be all over the papers that they were no longer arguidos.
This is not the case.

But your judgement and interpretative skills - as well as your penchent for innovative creativity - is highly susepct.
Your credibility was blown completely away by your claims to be close to sources who would be making ‘an announcement’ on Friday at ‘about 11:30′ (or was this time McCann time and the date a McCann date, as in he case of the last photograph and trips to bars in PDL?).
Ooops! Sorry, you never saw me, right? Im supposed to be reading! I’ll be back at about 18:00 to see if there is a full transcript (not McCann time). I’m hoping their ‘ones who are watched’ status gets lifted today so we can start getting some facts in the public domain.

A.Ribeiro ,never told ,he or the P.J. ,think that the mcscams are inocent
February 3rd, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Well whatever happens the mccanns will have to live with themselves, and the twins will get older and start asking questions about their sister and will themselves one day try to find out what happened, dont think they would forgive after finding they were left on their own while mum and dad went out to play, most of what is written here and in papers will be archived for future reference,….so good luck to them, a noose around there own neck..
bottom line is they left the kids all under four to fend for themselves (fact) even they admit that, everything else is speculation at the moment……….so I say good luck to them,if they can live with it!

Saturn, again I refer you to post 61, perhaps you are selective in what you choose to read, it does appear so, stop waffling and squirming on the hook.

I looked again at Jo’s Post 61 and did not see anything amiss. In future I won’t bother responding to your posts on this subject, or any other in which you refuse to state specifically what your objection is. I can’t be bothered responding to vague insinuations like this.
Do you think I should make an effort to read your mind? Frankly, I did take the trouble once and all I drew was a blank. So I suppose you are not very bright, and probably need a demotion, along with some remedial education. Or, you are one of these Jon Leach subordinates prowling the web, pretending to be dumb. How would I know, and who cares anyway?

You are right, Three-Times-Great (I love your name), in the mind of the people, “arguido” seems to mean “suspec”t. I noticed Ribeiro himself used the word “suspecto” instead of “arguido”.
This wouldn’t go well here, where we are constantly reminded not to mistake one for the other, so as not to be predjudicial to the “observed” person. If, after examination, the “observed person” is considered as having nothing to do with the crime under investigation, it doesn’t mean that the Police were bungling.

Now there’s interesting, given the reluctance of the PJ to open case-files to the McCanns lawyers……

Yes it does, and there is an implication that the mistake was tactical and the result of the mistake was to let the watched ones slip through the net.
There is no logical implication of innocence of the McCanns in the translation which you yourself posted.

Just a quick hello, and i think you should know this (saw the interview 3 times, without fogetting that Mr. A. Ribeiro works for Mr. S’ocrates ) :
The Público journalists are wrong in their transcript this is what i really told :
“Alípio Ribeiro exact words on the interview are “with the experience that I have of the magistracy from the Public Ministry” not “with the experience that I have as a magistrate of the Public Ministry”.

Arguido http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arguidos
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arguido (male, pronounced [ɐɾˈɡu̯idu]) or arguida (female, [ɐɾˈɡu̯idɐ]), normally translated “named suspect” or “formal suspect”,[1] is a status in Portuguese language legal systems, including the legal systems of Portugal and Mozambique.[2] It is given to a person whom the authorities suspect may have committed an offence.[1] This designation does not exist in certain other jurisdictions.[3] In a criminal investigation a person has to be declared an arguido prior to being arrested.[4]Portuguese law makes a distinction between arguido and suspect.[5]
[edit] The rights of an arguido
If a person becomes an arguido, he automatically gains certain rights that a witness or suspect would not have.[6] An arguido has the right to be accompanied by a lawyer when questioned.[4] The investigating police may ask the arguido more direct accusatory questions, which would not be legal otherwise, but the arguido must be presented with whatever evidence is held against him, [6] and unlike a witness has the right to remain silent[7], not to answer any question that may incriminate the person, and does not face legal action for lying. [8]
Witnesses in criminal investigations are legally bound to co-operate with the police and do not have the right to silence and face legal actions if they lie.[6][9] Because of the legal advantages, some individuals apply for arguido status to be given to themselves, e.g. when it would appear that the police suspect them but are trying to use their witness status to extract as much information as possible.[6]
A person who has arguido status has not been formally accused of a crime, arrested or charged,[10] and not all arguidos are subsequently charged.[1] The police may ask a court to restrict an arguido’s movement and oblige him to not leave the country.[1] Arguidos cannot change their place of residence.[10] There is no time limit on the status.[11]
[edit] Etymology
Arguido derives from the Latin arguire or arguere. [12][13] The English words “argue” and “argument” have the same etymology.

The lack of logic is fascinating… there’s a sociology PhD in this forum for someone!
There was no statement regarding the McCann’s guilt or innocence, simply a statement that the procedure that was followed may not have been the most efficient way to get to the bottom of the case. Their PR machine then took a leap of faith to saying that this meant that there was never a case against them. This is the watched ones saying this, and no one else.
… full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

The fuller , and more critical of Clarence, cut from that blog is :
Mr. Mitchell seems to interpret Alipio Ribeiro is repentant, when in fact what Ribeiro said that the absence of the appointed arguidos McCann, the United Kingdom had not hampered the investigation. Tactically it would have been better to keep them in ignorance, releasing balloons and walking through scenarios TV. The PJ had enjoyed a respite to keep doing what you are doing, that is investigating, as God commanded.
Very, very interesting is what it says Ribeiro regarding David and Goliath, and Mr Mitchell fails to mention … … Because … Who won this unequal battle?

The outcome of whither any British subject, who is resident on British soil will be tried in this case will be decided under British law, those lawful decisions being taken by the Home Office under advice from the CPS and possibly the Attorney General. They and they alone will decide, if any request for the apprehension and deliverance of a British citizen is recognised by British legislation. That is wholly subject to any such request being received.
