Madeleine McCann: Alipio Ribeiro’s Thinks, Clarence Mitchell Knows And A Birthday
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY STAR ON SUNDAY: “MADDIE COPS SAYS SORRY – Police ‘too quick’ “to blame parents”
“A top policeman has sensationally admitted that making Gerry and Kate McCann suspects over their daughter Maddie’s disappearance was too ‘hasty’. Alipio Ribeiro, boss of the Portuguese department in charge of the investigation, dropped his bombshell in a radio interview”
Says Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns spokesman: “Now that the national director of the Policia Judiciaria apparently acknowledges that they should never have been made arguidos, it follows there is no case for them to answer.”
SUNDAY EXPRESS: “POLICE ‘TOO HASTY’ OVER MCCANNS”
“As the couple bravely celebrated the third birthday of their twins, Sean and Amelie, one of Portugal’s most senior detectives admitted that making them suspects had been a “hasty” mistake”
Did Mr Alipio Ribeiro say “mistake” in his radio interview?
Says the paper: “The couple, both 39, said the official’s comments were tantamount to an admission that Portuguese detectives had bungled by centring their investigation on them.”
Says Mr Ribeiro to Portugal’s Radio Renascenca, owned by the Catholic Church:
“At this moment in time and speaking with the experience I have of Portugal’s Public Prosecution Service and the constitution of arguidos, I think there perhaps should have been another assessment before the McCanns were made official suspects.
“I don’t have any doubt about that. The national director of the Policia Judiciaria doesn’t give out orders on the constitution of arguidos but there was a certain hastiness”
Says the paper: “Last night Ribeiro was under growing pressure to stand down as national director of their country’s Policia Judiciaria”. Pressure from, whom?
MAIL ON SUNDAY: “”Police chief: We were too quick to make Gerry and Kate ‘arguidos’”
Says the Mail: “Kate and Gerry McCann’s bid to clear their names over the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine has been given a massive boost after the head of Portugal’s police admitted it had been a mistake to rush into making them official suspects”
Mr McCann says: “We need a breakthrough and this looks like it could be one. It is fantastic news. We still have a long way to go but people in Portugal need to understand what has been happening and what we have been going through. We know it will take the police a long time to accept what has been happening is wrong but it is an important step towards that”
Says the McCanns’ lawyer in Portugal, Carlos Pinto de Abreu: “Many people who may have vital information have possibly not come forward as they wrongly suspected the McCanns”
What about that huge reward, and doing the right thing? People may be deterred from coming forward for fear of being named in the media and questioned by Metodo 3, the McCann’s private investigators. But let us not speculate
SUNDAY PEOPLE: “MADDIE U-TURN - EXCLUSIVE Cops admit mistake on twins’ birthday”
“Kate and Gerry McCann threw a birthday bash for their twins yesterday - as a top cop admitted it was WRONG to name them as suspects over missing Maddie”
Well, Policia Judiciaria “boss” Alipio Ribeiro, said the police acted too hasilty. “Ribeiro last night faced calls to resign over the astonishing U-turn” – although from whom, the paper does not bother to say
Say the McCanns: “The support we have had from around the world has been amazing. It’s helped maintain our strength and hope and this has helped the search for our precious Madeleine. We believe there is a very good chance she is still alive. She deserves the love and security of her family. She needs to be back home with her mummy and daddy, brother and sister”
THE GUARDIAN: “Police chief says ‘we were too hasty’ in naming McCanns as suspects”
“In an interview to be aired on Portuguese radio today, Alípio Ribeiro, the national director of the Polícia Judiciária, will concede that police may have acted too soon in making Kate and Gerry McCann formal suspects, known in Portugal as arguidos. His comments were interpreted last night by the McCanns as a tacit admission that the police were wrong to name them as being involved in the disappearance of their four-year-old daughter”

“Think you should speak to her then. She will put you right.”
Which means you can’t…….
It does illustrate a major problem around this case, and other that attract interest on the web - inaccurate quotations, and downright fantasy pretty rapidly aquire a life of their own, being repeeated, uoted and misquoted - and still beleived by those who’ve got a mind to.

“Where does it quote “Levy” ?”
Look at the words re “David and Goliath”.
Then compare them with the quote I published upthread from Levy - which attributes those words not to Ribeiro, but to an unamed source within the PJ, commenting on Ribeiro’s on the record comments.
Then you’ll see, all that’s happened is your blogger has then claimed them as being direct from Ribeiro - without evidence to that effect, and despite their absence from any of the interview transcripts.
Not hard to follow the chain, is it…….?

Well, I said I was going away for maybe as much as 3 months and here I am already back again. Just a quickie! I said three months ago (3 Nov) that Soothsayer would prove to be a complete fraud, that it was nonsense (despite what everybody was saying at that time) that the McCann arrests were imminent or that the DNA evidence was compelling let alone conclusive. I was proved right on all three. Well, I’m now going to go out on a limb again
There is NO clever Machiavellian motive to catch the McCanns out behind Ribeiro’s Radio Renascenca interview to be aired later today. He just knows that Rebelo’s investigation is moving in a very different direction from Amaral’s and that as a result the McCann’s arguido status is going to be lifted. The PJ are going to be seen as having bungled the investigation under Amaral’s leadership. He is therefore trying to save face by distancing himself from that earlier and highly inept phase of the investigation, from the inexcusable and baseless leaks associated with that phase, and the damaging fallout that is going to result from the revelation of the depth of that ineptness and the extent of the shameless distortion of evidence involved in those leaks. After all he is the PJ chief and therefore could be seen as having been ultimately responsible for that fiasco.
It is also just possible that the Cipriano/Amaral inquiry is turning out bad for Amaral and that he is going to be shown to have been a corrupt policeman who framed Leonor and her brother. But I am not prepared to make as categorical a prediction on that one as on the former.
Well now we’ll see (ie. over the next month or two) if I’m right or not…

LOGIC
Sounds as if your son is very bright indeed, we should get Clarrie to attend a show perhaps with all his smoke and mirrors.
re living here, where we are , we have now had electricity for about 10 years, but still have generators on standby, as electricity is always going off. We have only had automatic telephones for just over 3 years, before that we had those nommer asseblief phones, where all the farmers wives on th same line would listen in, was fun, but as a result not PC literate. the storms are terrifying, we have a few huge ancient pine trees round the house and they attract lightning , we are always replacing electrical appliances. Mrs B would like to go back to Cape Town.

Really ?
Where does it quote “Levy” ?
Stop misinforming.
February 3rd, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Matt,
that’s not a transcript….it’s just another blogger who’s picked up the quote that Levy clearly attributes to a PJ source commenting on Ribeiro’s comments.
So, not cigar, I’m afraid…..what was that about misinformation? Web-nutters quoting each other is a very different thing from a primary, on the record source……

It is unbelievable that Doctors would have contacts within drug companies, a bit like lawyers knowing judges or Taxi drivers knowing how to get from A to B, how quaint.

Hi Bountyhunter
Nice to hear from you. I haven’t been on Anorak much this week as I’ve been a bit busy. Mainly to do with the offspring (as Chenier would say). My son’s back at boarding school but on Friday I had to take him some things he’d left at home. He does magic (as a long time hobby) and yesterday (Sat) he gave a one man magic show to 104 ten year old exam candidates (the school has asked him to lay one on every year for the past four years as a treat to relax the children following their exam). As I am his greatest fan, I’ve never missed it! So that is two days accounted for and the rest of the this week I’ve had to catch up on a few other things as well.
I’ve been reading about your electric storms in SA and getting nostalgic. When, as a child, my family lived near Mooi River, we all used to jump onto a bed with a rubber mattress when there was a storm and it was very frightening - the storms were certainly very violent. There was no TV there then (in fact we had no mains electricity just our own generator), and to make a phone call, you had to turn a handle on the phone until the operator came on to connect you to the number you wanted. Yet they were lovely chldhood days - in my memory at least!

Increasingly Increduloous
How ironic! Now a Clarence supporter tells us to wait until we have the actual transcript?
Surely Clarence would have been well advised to do that?
If he starts quoting senior foreign officials out of context (even to the point of inferring the civil tort of defamation) as he has done, his own paymasters might begin to fear political repercussions.
Anyway, a more serious issue, is there any truth in the story that the McCanns and others in the MW PDL apartments were enjoying ‘gift holidays’ from drug companies?
