And: “Portugal’s top prosecutor Antonio Cluny branded Ribeiro’s comment ‘extremely worrying’” – Why worrying? Because of what he said? Or because a policeman has given his personal views about an ongoing case? The Sun fails to make this clear
The McCanns spokesman tells us: “You cannot have the head of the police force openly questioning the validity of the way in which they were made suspects and then not have a review”
Can’t you? Can someone expert in Portuguese law tells us if you can or cannot…
FERGUS Shanahan: “COPS SO WRONG”
Alipis Ribero is on the radiop. Says Shanahan: “In effect, Mr Ribeiro is saying: ‘We never had any evidence agsint Kate and Gerry. We didn’t take Madeleine’s disappearance seriously… Some of our detectives thought Kate and Gerry looked dodgy. So we made them suspects and hoped something might turn up.”
The tabloids, meanwhile, look at “creepy” Robert Murat, also a suspect - you know, the one the Sun calls an “oddball“

jo - that is why its being kept as something totally seperate from met3 and team mcc, because if they were shown to be involved then it would indeed indicate that they are assuming that she is dead (bless her).
If they think she is dead then there is no longer any justifiable reason for the fund to keep going IMO. so they distance themselves from it.
do you remember g changing his blog before christmas from - we assume maddie is dead, we are sure she is alive? he even came out the next day and contradicted what clarrie had said on tv….

That’s a good idea. It might be useful to generalize the idea and look for other past conferences in that area. It may be that this conference was only attended (and no record) but a previous one was participated in, for example.
Here is a future medical conference on Medical Research Ethics • Patient Privacy and Confidentiality, in ALGARVE, PORTUGAL . Maybe this is the reason the McCanns announced they would go back to Portugal in April? (half-joking, but who knows?) The conference concerns ethics, so I suppose the McCanns ought to try and learn something there.

The word used in Portuguese was “PERCIPITADO”. It can be translated as Hasty or IMO as “too early”. It cannot in any possible way suggest that it was wrong to make them official suspects for lack of evidence or any other reason.
Only the British media are construing this word as an indication that the McCanns are innocent. Mr Ribeiro himself already clarified that his statement meant at that time (and just 8 days before the new CPP or Criminal Code came into force), it could have been more effective to wait before making them “arguidos” as this would have almost surely have allowed the PJ to prevent their departure from Portugal back to the UK.
There’s nothing in this statement to suggest that the McCanns are innocent… otherwise Mr Ribeiro would use the word ERRO (mistake).
Other than that - I agree that what are innocent genuine statements about this case assume a level of distortion and amplification in British media that would justify some more caution from Mr Ribeiro. But I don’t think it harmed the investigation in any possible way.
