Madeleine McCann: A Pundit Says, Judge Eurico Reis Orders And The Sun Omits
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
THE SUN: “Shut up: Maddie cop by judge”
Police national director Alipio Ribeiro “stunned his men” by “admitting” the decision to make “doctors” Kate and Gerry McCann suspects was “hasty”
Judge Eurico Reis said it is “not the cop’s role to publicly comment on cases under investigation. The judge raged: ‘It is his duty to SHUT UP.’”
And: “Portugal’s top prosecutor Antonio Cluny branded Ribeiro’s comment ‘extremely worrying’” – Why worrying? Because of what he said? Or because a policeman has given his personal views about an ongoing case? The Sun fails to make this clear
The McCanns spokesman tells us: “You cannot have the head of the police force openly questioning the validity of the way in which they were made suspects and then not have a review”
Can’t you? Can someone expert in Portuguese law tells us if you can or cannot…
FERGUS Shanahan: “COPS SO WRONG”
Alipis Ribero is on the radiop. Says Shanahan: “In effect, Mr Ribeiro is saying: ‘We never had any evidence agsint Kate and Gerry. We didn’t take Madeleine’s disappearance seriously… Some of our detectives thought Kate and Gerry looked dodgy. So we made them suspects and hoped something might turn up.”
The tabloids, meanwhile, look at “creepy” Robert Murat, also a suspect - you know, the one the Sun calls an “oddball“
DAILY STAR: “BLOW FOR MADDIE PARENTS”
“TORMENTED Kate and Gerry McCann are to remain official suspects over their daughter’s disappearance. They hoped to have their ‘arguido’ status lifted after Portugal’s top cop Alipio Ribeiro admitted it may have been a mistake to put them in the frame. But government legal advisers yesterday denied they were planning to clear their names”
So the personal views of a policeman are not a deciding factor in an ongoing investigation?
“The 39-year-olds may be considered suspects for as long as the investigation continues – possibly years”
Read all about it!
DAILY MIRROR: “STILL SUSPECTS – Maddy probe team in row over letting McCanns off hook”
Says Judge Eurico Reis: “This case has had more than enough media exposure”
Mr Ribeiro is on the radio…
Says “media pundit” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa: “He killed the investigation when he said there was haste in making the McCanns arguidos in the case”
Says Antonio Cluny, who we heard from earlier in the Sun: “I don’t know if he’s right or not but this conduct of speaking about pending cases is extremely worrying”
Why did the Sun end its Mr Cluny quote short?
LIVERPOOL DAILY POST: “Madeleine McCann: Liverpool grandad hoping for a miracle”
Says Mr Healy: “Like most people I would like to think that if there is a spark of hope I have to hang on to it. They haven’t found anything yet. We have to believe a miracle can happen. I still believe she is alive and until someone tells me different I will believe”
IRISH INDEPENDENT: “Maddy’s grandad hopes for miracle”
Brian Healey says he is pleased that “Alipio Rebeiro, national director of the Policia Judiciaria, said detectives were too hasty in making the couple suspects over their daughter’s disappearance”
Says he: “I am glad he has said it, it will get things moving to reinstate the fact they’re innocent”

Administrator: That’s fine I have added both credits to the articles. If yesterday’s confrontation led to a poster losing their temper to the point where a block has to be put in place can I ask everyone to be especially careful. “……Detectives were right to make the McCanns offiial suspects, says apologetic Portugues police chief.
Alipio Ribeiro has reportedly said sorry to his officers for saying they rushed into making Gerry and Kate McCann suspects in their daughter Madeleine’s disappearance.
Mr Ribeiro apologised to a police union boss and senior detectives in the Algarve, the newspaper 24 Horas reported today.
The director of the Judicial Police said he had made an “error of expression” when he said there had been “hastiness” in making the McCanns “arguidos”, or formal suspects.
Gerry and Kate McCann had hoped their ‘arguido’ status might be lifted after Portugal’s most senior detective said they had rushed into naming the parents formal suspects
He apologised to Carlos Anjos, head of the Judicial Police Inspectors Union, and to officers leading theMadeleine investigation. ….”

The Judge has told the top policeman of the investigation to “shut up”, I think that was perfect and enough. By saying that he thought the mccs were made suspects too soon, he was stating his own opinion and as the judge said————-he shouldn’t have said anything. Also, I believe I read last week (I think it was) the original Detective is back on the case.

The thing is its all hearsay, and going from site to site as gospel. What do the PJ have to say themselves, and not 3rd 4th and 5th hand?
None of the sources seem to be official PJ.
As a source for gossip everything else is fine, but official statements have to come from an official body.
This is all rather as Clarrie said the other day that the UK Police don’t doubt the McC, but until the UK Police say so, its just unsubstantiated spin.

I agree with you that if this is true, it is an enormous example of the interference from the government into the course of justice. Which could only happen in case of great danger for the state, I suppose, and with the authorisation of what we call in France Conseil d’État (high Chamber of magistrates which deal with the legality of state matters).
How can this happen openly, in our days, in Europe? Unbelievable. I hope it is only an assumption from the author of the article.

some comments :
I wish that someone, somewhere, would put an end to the massive speculation about Mr Ribeiro’s statements.
The statement that has been posted on the McCanns’ website is absolutely unbelievable, in the way it twists Mr Ribeiro’s words and promotes a lie that should - must! - be corrected as soon as possible, by the PJ.
If nothing else, this case has highlighted how desperately the PJ need to get themselves a media cabinet, and how badly they need to drop their attitude of ‘no comment’. This is the year 2008, and while I fully respect the way the PJ operates internally, and that they need not respond to every silly little headline in every silly little tabloid, there are serious issues that cannot be allowed to grow into a cancer.
The McCanns’ official statement on their website is not just another tabloid article. It should be dealt with appropriately.
As much as I find it amusing to watch the McCanns, and especially their spokesman, spinning every little bit of gossip into a full-blown piece of propaganda, on an almost daily basis, I think it is an entire matter altogether, to take the words that were spoken by Mr Ribeiro and transform them into an apology of sorts, or an acknowledgement of error.
Finally, I’d like to remind you that Mr Amaral did not leave his post in vain. He is seen as a national hero to this day, a man who would not be intimidated and who refused to cooperate with lies and deception. It is very significant that Mr Ribeiro did not mention that his allegations were untrue, but that his mistake was to make them within the context that he did.
