Madeleine McCann: A Pundit Says, Judge Eurico Reis Orders And The Sun Omits
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
THE SUN: “Shut up: Maddie cop by judge”
Police national director Alipio Ribeiro “stunned his men” by “admitting” the decision to make “doctors” Kate and Gerry McCann suspects was “hasty”
Judge Eurico Reis said it is “not the cop’s role to publicly comment on cases under investigation. The judge raged: ‘It is his duty to SHUT UP.’”
And: “Portugal’s top prosecutor Antonio Cluny branded Ribeiro’s comment ‘extremely worrying’” – Why worrying? Because of what he said? Or because a policeman has given his personal views about an ongoing case? The Sun fails to make this clear
The McCanns spokesman tells us: “You cannot have the head of the police force openly questioning the validity of the way in which they were made suspects and then not have a review”
Can’t you? Can someone expert in Portuguese law tells us if you can or cannot…
FERGUS Shanahan: “COPS SO WRONG”
Alipis Ribero is on the radiop. Says Shanahan: “In effect, Mr Ribeiro is saying: ‘We never had any evidence agsint Kate and Gerry. We didn’t take Madeleine’s disappearance seriously… Some of our detectives thought Kate and Gerry looked dodgy. So we made them suspects and hoped something might turn up.”
The tabloids, meanwhile, look at “creepy” Robert Murat, also a suspect - you know, the one the Sun calls an “oddball“
DAILY STAR: “BLOW FOR MADDIE PARENTS”
“TORMENTED Kate and Gerry McCann are to remain official suspects over their daughter’s disappearance. They hoped to have their ‘arguido’ status lifted after Portugal’s top cop Alipio Ribeiro admitted it may have been a mistake to put them in the frame. But government legal advisers yesterday denied they were planning to clear their names”
So the personal views of a policeman are not a deciding factor in an ongoing investigation?
“The 39-year-olds may be considered suspects for as long as the investigation continues – possibly years”
Read all about it!
DAILY MIRROR: “STILL SUSPECTS – Maddy probe team in row over letting McCanns off hook”
Says Judge Eurico Reis: “This case has had more than enough media exposure”
Mr Ribeiro is on the radio…
Says “media pundit” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa: “He killed the investigation when he said there was haste in making the McCanns arguidos in the case”
Says Antonio Cluny, who we heard from earlier in the Sun: “I don’t know if he’s right or not but this conduct of speaking about pending cases is extremely worrying”
Why did the Sun end its Mr Cluny quote short?
LIVERPOOL DAILY POST: “Madeleine McCann: Liverpool grandad hoping for a miracle”
Says Mr Healy: “Like most people I would like to think that if there is a spark of hope I have to hang on to it. They haven’t found anything yet. We have to believe a miracle can happen. I still believe she is alive and until someone tells me different I will believe”
IRISH INDEPENDENT: “Maddy’s grandad hopes for miracle”
Brian Healey says he is pleased that “Alipio Rebeiro, national director of the Policia Judiciaria, said detectives were too hasty in making the couple suspects over their daughter’s disappearance”
Says he: “I am glad he has said it, it will get things moving to reinstate the fact they’re innocent”

I also noticed that the new website doesn’t mention Mari Luz - even after phone calls from Kate.

dcb - I take it you reckon the fund is running dry.
What happens when it’s all gone?
Does McCann activity end?
Do we get more sob stories from them about the need to “keep searching” for Madeleine?…. and therefore pleas for more money? (cash in envelopes to their home address will be fine)
Does activity continue, funded (secretly) from elsewhere?
February 5th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Maybe the funds in a suitcase on its way to Switzaland.

It was I that mentioned it.
The significance from what I can see is - secrecy. The fund total changed very little from Christmas (despite the Christmas video). There were a lot of comments about movies, documentaries, Oprah shows, charging press for information - all to generate funds to help find Madeleine. Then lo and behold - the fund total doesn’t appear anymore.

Quite right.
And I reckon team mccann have gone into silence whilst preparing their next spin offensive.
Today’s agenda at the spinnerette’s meeting is:
1) Brainstorming what mega-super-issue the team are going to publish on the tabloids to divert attentions from the fact that:
a) the reservoir search produced nothing
b) no recent sightings of madeleine in exotic locations
c) no recent sightings of sketch man
d) no more money coming into the fund
e) no progress reported by M3
f) no ludicrous and hurtful comments by the PJ or the evil portuguese press
e) now the letters are in the Home Office
February 5th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Someone mentioned earlier today that the McCann’s website no longer shows how much is in the fund, or has been donated to it.
Does anyone think this is significant?
It could mean the fund is dwindling and they don’t want attention drawn to it.
It could mean they HAVE received further donations, which they have been asked to keep quiet about.
Or it could just be that G&K&CM don’t think it’s important or interesting enough to show any more.
Any ideas??

It seems to appear and disappear periodically, I think its reappears when interest is accrued and then added, but could well be wrong

Camp mccann were the only people to make a fuss over it. The simple fact is that they are still arguidos and the process is continuing.

Thanks for the information.
Frankly I think a lot has been made of Ribeiro’ s comments. I think he was irresponsible - yet genuine - in saying that they’d have had better chances of solving the case if the McCanns had not been made arguidos before the new CPP came into force. But I don’t really think it was a pre-meditaded attack on the investigation or a strategic statement to divert attentions from anything else. The man just said what many people think (I for one agree with him… but it’s easier now that we know what we know).
Having said that, Ribeiro should know (better than anyone) that these comments are then misrepresented by Team McCann - and naturally by some interests in Portugal who probably don’t like him heading the PJ (such as opposition parties who are happy to rub in the fact that he’s a personal friend of the justice minister).
I’d not make a big fuss about it. I don’t think it’ll change one bit the direction of the investigation.

Maybe the lake search and the “hasty” comments were just a smokescreen for the re-issue of the letters.

I believe the letters are already in the uk and that the PJ send somebody from their team to forward them in persona to the home office.
What is 103% sure is that it was a new spin
I am impatient to see what will be the next spin now…..please,Clarrie,dont make me wait too much!

You know, the subject has been curiously “dropped” by everybody…. what does this mean?
I am certain that the PJ is keeping it very quiet… dont you think?
Quiet, diligent, discreet and everything…. after the fiasco with Ribeiro, thats the best course of action. In fact they have been like that since the beginning (apart for Amaral who was so eager to arrest them on the dot!!!!)

There go the letters again…
24 Horas
The Public Prosecution Office is due today to send the rogatory letters containing the questions that are to be asked to the McCanns, to England
The Public Ministry is due today to send the final version of the rogatory letter that is destined to question the parents of Madeleine McCann and their friends again.
This will be the end of a ’soap opera’ that began after a magistrate from the British Home Office unauthorized her colleague at Eurojust, the European entity which processes the interchange of judicial issues among the various countries. She demanded that the letter is sent through official channels - which means through the Portuguese Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
José Lopes da Mota, the president of Eurojust, minimizes saying: “The letter was made with the collaboration of a representative from Eurojust. A magistrate from the Home Office decided that the legal procedures for the sending of the document had not been fulfilled and informed the colleague at Eurojust. After everything was duly analysed, we decided to request Portugal to make the letter again and to send it through official channels.”
Pinto Monteiro, the Public Prosecutor, assumes he made a wrong option: “What happened with the rogatory letters is no secret. They were with Eurojust… Some obstacles were raised by the English magistrate. The letters ended up returning, and will now be sent through the international cooperation, which depends upon this Office. They will be sent today [yesterday] or tomorrow [today].”
Carlos Anjos, the president of ASFIC, the Criminal Investigation Officers’ Union, was laconic: “At this moment, the ball is not in the PJ’s court.”
