Madeleine McCann: A Pundit Says, Judge Eurico Reis Orders And The Sun Omits
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
THE SUN: “Shut up: Maddie cop by judge”
Police national director Alipio Ribeiro “stunned his men” by “admitting” the decision to make “doctors” Kate and Gerry McCann suspects was “hasty”
Judge Eurico Reis said it is “not the cop’s role to publicly comment on cases under investigation. The judge raged: ‘It is his duty to SHUT UP.’”
And: “Portugal’s top prosecutor Antonio Cluny branded Ribeiro’s comment ‘extremely worrying’” – Why worrying? Because of what he said? Or because a policeman has given his personal views about an ongoing case? The Sun fails to make this clear
The McCanns spokesman tells us: “You cannot have the head of the police force openly questioning the validity of the way in which they were made suspects and then not have a review”
Can’t you? Can someone expert in Portuguese law tells us if you can or cannot…
FERGUS Shanahan: “COPS SO WRONG”
Alipis Ribero is on the radiop. Says Shanahan: “In effect, Mr Ribeiro is saying: ‘We never had any evidence agsint Kate and Gerry. We didn’t take Madeleine’s disappearance seriously… Some of our detectives thought Kate and Gerry looked dodgy. So we made them suspects and hoped something might turn up.”
The tabloids, meanwhile, look at “creepy” Robert Murat, also a suspect - you know, the one the Sun calls an “oddball“
DAILY STAR: “BLOW FOR MADDIE PARENTS”
“TORMENTED Kate and Gerry McCann are to remain official suspects over their daughter’s disappearance. They hoped to have their ‘arguido’ status lifted after Portugal’s top cop Alipio Ribeiro admitted it may have been a mistake to put them in the frame. But government legal advisers yesterday denied they were planning to clear their names”
So the personal views of a policeman are not a deciding factor in an ongoing investigation?
“The 39-year-olds may be considered suspects for as long as the investigation continues – possibly years”
Read all about it!
DAILY MIRROR: “STILL SUSPECTS – Maddy probe team in row over letting McCanns off hook”
Says Judge Eurico Reis: “This case has had more than enough media exposure”
Mr Ribeiro is on the radio…
Says “media pundit” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa: “He killed the investigation when he said there was haste in making the McCanns arguidos in the case”
Says Antonio Cluny, who we heard from earlier in the Sun: “I don’t know if he’s right or not but this conduct of speaking about pending cases is extremely worrying”
Why did the Sun end its Mr Cluny quote short?
LIVERPOOL DAILY POST: “Madeleine McCann: Liverpool grandad hoping for a miracle”
Says Mr Healy: “Like most people I would like to think that if there is a spark of hope I have to hang on to it. They haven’t found anything yet. We have to believe a miracle can happen. I still believe she is alive and until someone tells me different I will believe”
IRISH INDEPENDENT: “Maddy’s grandad hopes for miracle”
Brian Healey says he is pleased that “Alipio Rebeiro, national director of the Policia Judiciaria, said detectives were too hasty in making the couple suspects over their daughter’s disappearance”
Says he: “I am glad he has said it, it will get things moving to reinstate the fact they’re innocent”

I’m starting to enjoy this.
Question 3- If we are to believe the inumerous conspiracy theories that circulate on internet fora and that involve Gordon BRown, the British Government and indeed the British establishment in trying to cover-up and protect the McCanns, how are we to explain the sniffer dogs brought into PDL at the suggestion of British cops? If the arm of the British establishment and diplomatic service is long enough to reach out to the Portuguese government and influence the successful outcome of the investigation, are we to believe that this same establishment would be unable to influence Leicestershire police constabulary. On the basis of public and official statements by the PJ spokesperson the McCanns were never suspects (but victims) until these dogs were brought in. One can only assume, that without the cooperation of british authorities, portuguese police would still be looking for Madeleine in Morocco, Chile and Bosnia. Please discuss.

Reply 1) there should be no legal loopholes created by either PJ or UK.
Reply 2) there has been no change in official status.
Re final paragraph - that is something only the PJ know and their laws prohibit them from releasing anything to the press - hence the speculation on this site and others.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
dcb 350 - i do think a little challenging is not bad either to keep the discussion going.
Let me try:
Question 1 - Rogatory letters: it is now established that the portuguese sent it to the home office via Eurojust - the home office rejected the letters for what 24Horas (portuguese newspaper) and Joana Morais considers “bureaucratic reasons” and qualifies the british attitude as a tandrum. In my modest opinion, any action to be taken by the Home office and British authorities will be subject to great legal scrutiny. Therefore, it is only diligent that the home office requests all formalities to be duly complied with. It is ONLY the portuguese authoritie’s fault if the letters have failed to comply with the requirements put by the Home office, and the interviews have been further delayed. Please discuss.
Question 2- Alipio Ribeiro’s comments: the real meaning of his statement or interpretations of “hasty” leave some space for speculation. But what seems to be very clear is that Mr Ribeiro has very little faith in the tactical competence of the force he leads. Particularly regarding the PJs ability in conducting successful investigations. It would appear that anyone with a basic qualification to be a detective in the PJ should be competent to understand that the entry into force of a new Criminal Proceeding Code could have an impact on the legal status of two prime suspects. Mr Amaral, in Mr Ribeiro’s view, was not discerning enough to tactically think what would be better for the investigation and “almost by impulse” named the McCanns arguidos, allowing their return to the UK and putting the succcess of the whole investigation at the mercy of a more or less cooperative british Home office.
If mistakes of judgement seem to be so common amid the PJ how are we to be reassured that they do have enough credible evidence that would point towards the McCanns involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance?

Mental imbalance has deep roots as you know.
I think her inability to conceive like in many other cases are directly linked to the subconscious in my humble opinion,so why force nature and be such parents?
I just dont understand it. This may not be the issue here although,of course it is part of the big picture

I think there was a lot of self-medicating going on and probably with drugs obtained illicitly thru’ the parents’ work. All fuel to the fire of reasons for a cover up if something went wrong.

Jo
May be suffering from premature menopause????
————————————————————————————————
I suspect other things have contributed to the current unbalance of mind.
However, amenorrhoea, due to KM’s BMI and / or the distances she ran, might have contributed to her inability to become pregnant.
And, even if amenorrhoea is not the same as premature menopause, the hormonal imbalances might be similar and might have affected her state of mind earlier.

are you sure about that jo…there have been one or two new posters recently. A little strange dont you think ??? this late in the day???
February 5th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Peter O,
Good to see that clarified, but if I may assume a little, I think you are rather over-reacting.
I was one of those who called for action to be taken against you-know-who, because he was ruining the forum, and insulting me personally by posting untrue, unfounded allegations about me. This behaviour stopped me from using the forum as much as I would have wished.
I’m sure you will agree that posters should not be allowed to hound other posters off the board, but that’s just what he was doing to me, as he had previously done to other posters.
I posted to you a couple of days ago that you would not have been so tolerant if the venom had been directed at you, and I still believe that to be the case.
Mods and admin do a fine (umpaid) job here. I am very grateful for all they do, as are most posters; but they were more than patient, and far too tolerant (in my view) of this individual, and they should be applauded for the action they took.
The forum has been a much more pleasant place since his departure, partly because he is no longer around, and partly because everyone seems to have had a “sanity check” and moderated their own contributions far more sensitively.
I am sorry to see you go as I believe you made worthwhile contributions to the discussions here. I sure everyone would welcome you back.

The evening standard and the vast majority of british media have shown in the past very limited understanding of judicial matters irrespective of the country.
The reference to “government officials” refers I think to magistrates from the prosecutors office (MP) who have been quoted in other newspapers as saying that “the Mccanns status will be examined in due course (not now as asked by Clarence Mitchell)”.
