Madeleine McCann: A Pundit Says, Judge Eurico Reis Orders And The Sun Omits
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
THE SUN: “Shut up: Maddie cop by judge”
Police national director Alipio Ribeiro “stunned his men” by “admitting” the decision to make “doctors” Kate and Gerry McCann suspects was “hasty”
Judge Eurico Reis said it is “not the cop’s role to publicly comment on cases under investigation. The judge raged: ‘It is his duty to SHUT UP.’”
And: “Portugal’s top prosecutor Antonio Cluny branded Ribeiro’s comment ‘extremely worrying’” – Why worrying? Because of what he said? Or because a policeman has given his personal views about an ongoing case? The Sun fails to make this clear
The McCanns spokesman tells us: “You cannot have the head of the police force openly questioning the validity of the way in which they were made suspects and then not have a review”
Can’t you? Can someone expert in Portuguese law tells us if you can or cannot…
FERGUS Shanahan: “COPS SO WRONG”
Alipis Ribero is on the radiop. Says Shanahan: “In effect, Mr Ribeiro is saying: ‘We never had any evidence agsint Kate and Gerry. We didn’t take Madeleine’s disappearance seriously… Some of our detectives thought Kate and Gerry looked dodgy. So we made them suspects and hoped something might turn up.”
The tabloids, meanwhile, look at “creepy” Robert Murat, also a suspect - you know, the one the Sun calls an “oddball“
DAILY STAR: “BLOW FOR MADDIE PARENTS”
“TORMENTED Kate and Gerry McCann are to remain official suspects over their daughter’s disappearance. They hoped to have their ‘arguido’ status lifted after Portugal’s top cop Alipio Ribeiro admitted it may have been a mistake to put them in the frame. But government legal advisers yesterday denied they were planning to clear their names”
So the personal views of a policeman are not a deciding factor in an ongoing investigation?
“The 39-year-olds may be considered suspects for as long as the investigation continues – possibly years”
Read all about it!
DAILY MIRROR: “STILL SUSPECTS – Maddy probe team in row over letting McCanns off hook”
Says Judge Eurico Reis: “This case has had more than enough media exposure”
Mr Ribeiro is on the radio…
Says “media pundit” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa: “He killed the investigation when he said there was haste in making the McCanns arguidos in the case”
Says Antonio Cluny, who we heard from earlier in the Sun: “I don’t know if he’s right or not but this conduct of speaking about pending cases is extremely worrying”
Why did the Sun end its Mr Cluny quote short?
LIVERPOOL DAILY POST: “Madeleine McCann: Liverpool grandad hoping for a miracle”
Says Mr Healy: “Like most people I would like to think that if there is a spark of hope I have to hang on to it. They haven’t found anything yet. We have to believe a miracle can happen. I still believe she is alive and until someone tells me different I will believe”
IRISH INDEPENDENT: “Maddy’s grandad hopes for miracle”
Brian Healey says he is pleased that “Alipio Rebeiro, national director of the Policia Judiciaria, said detectives were too hasty in making the couple suspects over their daughter’s disappearance”
Says he: “I am glad he has said it, it will get things moving to reinstate the fact they’re innocent”

NOSEY I agree no one know’s what the goverment are doing, if anything to stand in the way. But if they are, their standing would /could loose credibilty ,when the next time come’s that we need assistance from other goverment’s.

Suppose it was an accident and a cover-up, I am not saying I condone it, or I condone the way the MCs left the children alone, but it is not intentional murder. For the children’s sake, I still think they wouldn’t be better off in a foster home, unless it is someone very close to them . Even so, think of the shock of being suddenly put in the care of other people without understanding anything about it. Whatever we feel about the parents, they love their children in their own way, and the children love them, I am sure. I also think people are able to improve. We have to think of the children’s happiness first.
If they intentionnally harmed their daughter, that would be very different, and they would be so toxic that it would be better for their children never to be near them any more.

I am talking about your new anorak moniker and marital status!
Giving up Anorak for lent is a bridge too far.
Your contributions are vital.
After all - we are the ones who remember this is actually about M and not the McDrearies.

Let’s face it, the “why did you leave us alone?” conversations will come.
———————————————
Without a doubt, and that’s when the problems are going to start IMO. The minute they’re old enough to realise that as a result of being left alone, they are now minus an older sister, the “proverbial” is going to hit the fan …. and it’s not going to be a pretty sight!

lindy - do we know that they are standing in the way of the pj? i posted earlier that there may be some subtle differences by having it presented to them via the portugese government and not eurojust. I don’t know am speculating, if they agree to the pj’s request via political channels will it make extradition requests that may (or may not) come easier? In this event will it make any appeal against extradition easier or harder? for example via eurojust are appeals heard directly by the european courts??
having never heard of eurojust until recently i don’t know what difference this will make - and am waiting for some intelligent legally minded anorak poster to enlighten me

M&A do a fantastic job here.
However, if you have a problem with them over one or two issues, surely the best course of action would be to discuss it.
How does ‘leaving’ absolve your conscience? In fact, if you feel that strongly, that conscience should obligate you to stay and argue your case for a better forum for all!
Please do not go as your posts are very good. Besides, we need to see what the end cardie looks like.

“….blame their parents for leaving them alone…”
++++++++++++
And it’s one thing the parents will never be able to deny. Sad.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
I don’t believe that the twins are affected physocologically at this stage, I believe they’re still a little too young to comprehend the entire situation. However, as they grow older, and particularly in their early teenage rebellious years, they are going to be dramatically affected by what has happened to their sister and the uncertainty surrounding her disappearance.
They are going to be looking for a target for their anger, and this will be their parents, I believe.
I sincerely hope that this case is positively concluded so that the twins can be told with certainty what actually happened to their older sister, and they don’t have to carry on their lives with the doubt that is currently surrounding Madeleine’s disappearance.
Whichever way this case goes, I do believe, that at some stage in their lives they will turn and blame their parents for leaving them alone, an action which changed all of their lives forever.

The british goverment have just had a suspect brought back from north africa for a big robbery, they also had a suspect brought back from italy suspected for the 21/7 failed bombing’s.They sent a british man back to usa for killing his wife and child and they sent 3 banker’s to the usa. If IMO the brown goverment stand in the way of the pj and their law’s, we can never expect any other country’ to assist us when we need help in the future when we need people sent back to this country. All just IMO.

Just an observation really, with the eyes of the world on the twins, does anyone think harm will be befall them?
+++++++++++++++++++++
People have said on here that if the Mccanns go back to Portugal they will not have a fair hearing because of language barriers etc. Your point above is exactly what I thought about this argument also.

coolandcalm, the fact they still have rather unfettered custody of their twins is one of the anomalies of this case.
I have spoken with a number of reasonably senior people in the social work profession.
Their general opinion is that IF the McCanns are found guilty of a serious crime which illustrates their unsuitability as parents, it is highly unlikely that their other children would be returned to them. This would obviously not be an automatic action and would require several lengthy and complicated processes to be followed, and it is of course possible, though (IMO) highly unlikely that the children would be placed back in danger.

382 It’s not a matter of forgiving.. its a matter of law.

A relevant point for everything connected with this case - not just the twins.
