Madeleine McCann: A Pundit Says, Judge Eurico Reis Orders And The Sun Omits
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
THE SUN: “Shut up: Maddie cop by judge”
Police national director Alipio Ribeiro “stunned his men” by “admitting” the decision to make “doctors” Kate and Gerry McCann suspects was “hasty”
Judge Eurico Reis said it is “not the cop’s role to publicly comment on cases under investigation. The judge raged: ‘It is his duty to SHUT UP.’”
And: “Portugal’s top prosecutor Antonio Cluny branded Ribeiro’s comment ‘extremely worrying’” – Why worrying? Because of what he said? Or because a policeman has given his personal views about an ongoing case? The Sun fails to make this clear
The McCanns spokesman tells us: “You cannot have the head of the police force openly questioning the validity of the way in which they were made suspects and then not have a review”
Can’t you? Can someone expert in Portuguese law tells us if you can or cannot…
FERGUS Shanahan: “COPS SO WRONG”
Alipis Ribero is on the radiop. Says Shanahan: “In effect, Mr Ribeiro is saying: ‘We never had any evidence agsint Kate and Gerry. We didn’t take Madeleine’s disappearance seriously… Some of our detectives thought Kate and Gerry looked dodgy. So we made them suspects and hoped something might turn up.”
The tabloids, meanwhile, look at “creepy” Robert Murat, also a suspect - you know, the one the Sun calls an “oddball“
DAILY STAR: “BLOW FOR MADDIE PARENTS”
“TORMENTED Kate and Gerry McCann are to remain official suspects over their daughter’s disappearance. They hoped to have their ‘arguido’ status lifted after Portugal’s top cop Alipio Ribeiro admitted it may have been a mistake to put them in the frame. But government legal advisers yesterday denied they were planning to clear their names”
So the personal views of a policeman are not a deciding factor in an ongoing investigation?
“The 39-year-olds may be considered suspects for as long as the investigation continues – possibly years”
Read all about it!
DAILY MIRROR: “STILL SUSPECTS – Maddy probe team in row over letting McCanns off hook”
Says Judge Eurico Reis: “This case has had more than enough media exposure”
Mr Ribeiro is on the radio…
Says “media pundit” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa: “He killed the investigation when he said there was haste in making the McCanns arguidos in the case”
Says Antonio Cluny, who we heard from earlier in the Sun: “I don’t know if he’s right or not but this conduct of speaking about pending cases is extremely worrying”
Why did the Sun end its Mr Cluny quote short?
LIVERPOOL DAILY POST: “Madeleine McCann: Liverpool grandad hoping for a miracle”
Says Mr Healy: “Like most people I would like to think that if there is a spark of hope I have to hang on to it. They haven’t found anything yet. We have to believe a miracle can happen. I still believe she is alive and until someone tells me different I will believe”
IRISH INDEPENDENT: “Maddy’s grandad hopes for miracle”
Brian Healey says he is pleased that “Alipio Rebeiro, national director of the Policia Judiciaria, said detectives were too hasty in making the couple suspects over their daughter’s disappearance”
Says he: “I am glad he has said it, it will get things moving to reinstate the fact they’re innocent”

I will not make the statement that I believe the twins are in physical danger at this moment, because I simply do not know if this is the case.
Phsycological (did I spell it right this time
) damage is unavoidable IMO. No matter which way this situation goes, there is going to be mental damage to the twins. Taking them away from their parents at this stage will worsen the damage for them. They do not realise at this moment in time that it was their parents who are the direct result of their sister no longer being around because of their action of leaving them alone (no matter what happened that evening/prior evenings it was the initial act of leaving the children alone that caused Madeleine to no longer be around).
I am totally anti-Mc BECAUSE of their selfish actions, but I still do not believe it to be in the best interests of the twins, after firstly, losing their older sister, to now be removed from the care of their parents.

Man on the Hill, I think that you have summed up what happened very well.
There is a dearth of pro’s on this site, even more so of any of quality.
I am open to correction, but as such, I suspect M&A tend to grant several of the pro’s quite a bit of latitude, hence sledgehammer not getting a yellow or red the other night when he/she clearly warranted it.
Any pro’s, even poor ones, are hard to come by. They probably try and keep them around for some semblance of balance.
Unfortunately, quality debating and a “pro” stance are almost mutually exclusive imo, as witnessed by most of sledgehammer’s efforts, most of which could at best be descibed as bizarre.
I alluded to a thread on 3A’s last night, and I do believe that should serve as a bit of a wake-up call to all of us.
These people apparently either DO actually have an agenda to close inquiring forums down, or at the very least, they aspire to have one.
I would not be overly surprised if the situation regarding sledgehammer WAS somewhat contrived, but one has to bear in mind what had transpired leading up to it.
I suspect the situation had to be dealt with urgently, and that is why it may have come across as a bit strange to some.
It had become very clear to a few of us, what sledgehammer was up to.
The arrival of an admiring “handlanger” (nice South African expression equating to something along the lines of a “sidekick”) was imo, no coincidence.
As I commented at the time, it was either the basis for another Anorak romance, or a bit of onanistic self-approval. I won’t bother to guess which one.
Of course, there are always a few with axes to grind hanging around, and that added to the confusion when one or two of those used the incident to climb in and vent their frustration from previous epsisodes.
I am an advocate of freedom of speech and expression, but when there is an underhand, orchestrated drive by a segment of particpants to deny others that very right, then imo I’m afraid those posters no longer deserve the support and protection of fellow posters.
I think M&A were in a very dangerous and sticky situation, and had to act, even if it did seem a little strange at the time.
Just my opinion.

Has the blue tennis bag been found yet?
Have the 1,000,000,000,000 Moroccan posters generated anything positive?
And why - if she is so desperate to help the PJ, is Jane Tanner waiting for paperwork to be processed and not just going back volintarily?
February 5th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
just me - it takes an awful lot unfortunately
, my health visitor told me of a visit she once had to check on a newborn baby. The baby’s older sibling came into the room having fallena nd bumped his leg. As a nurse she said she would look at it for him, rolled up his trouser leg to find it covered in ciggarette burns, old and new, mother started crying etc etc, when asked who’d done this the child said his father, and mother obviousley new what was going on.
I asked the health visitot what happened to the child and she said - he was still with the family - as the father had shown remorse and agreed to accept help to manage his problem.. UGH UGH - she said it was the hardest thing she had ever done, leaving that house without that child under her arm…

They are suspected of it, and haven’t been judged, lyet, or even charged. So we can’t pretend we know for sure what they have done. They left their children alone (which I do think is very bad), then, do you think the children of all the tapas 9 should be put in foster homes?
The childen are deeply attached to their surroundings, it is the only thing they have ever known. What a tragedy it would be for them to be placed elsewhere. When the exact part of the parents is known, a decision will be taken. meanwhile, I think the best is to leave them at home, with social services seing that they are properly taken care of.

I am still concerned about the twins. About 10 years ago I had to call the rspca as a neighbour was ill treating her dog. The dog was taken away. A week later I had a surprise visit from social services. They told me they had concerns about my children and had to follow up on an annony, mous phone call. I knew who had phoned them and it was out of pure spite. The SS talked to me in my lounge with my 2 children and were fully satisfied and happy with their welfare and the episode was over. My problem is, that I was happy to talk to SS and had nothing to hide as I knew my children were perfectly well cared for . However, they talked to me for no more than half an hour and IMO god forbid if I had been mistreating my children, I could have easily covered it. They didnt speak to the children directly, they just took my word for everything. My children, for all the SS know, could well have had bruises on their arms and legs, but nothing was ever checked. I also knew a friend of a friend who was a drug addict, SS were happy enough that she was fit to look after her 2 children with no regular cheks as far as I know. What does it take for a child to be ‘at risk’ ?

Wonder what the McConns should give up for Lent?
February 5th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
lindy agreed
marie - the policy of social services is wherever possible to leave children in their own family environment, with appropriate checks in place. I think that it is only in cases where the abuse has been persistent and is likely to continue that they would be removed.
So if they are not charged in connection with maddies disapearence i doubt that any visable action would be taken. I suppose if they are convicted of something more serious then custody may be granted on a temporary (maybe even a perminent) basis to an appropriate family member? But even in the worst case scenario visitation rights would be given. IMO

The twins’ future will be decided by the proper authorities at the proper time.
If the McCanns are found guilty of deliberately harming their daughter, future custody of the twins may be largely academic, as they may be in their mid- to late- teens before their parents would be freed!

Hope I never have to change to Catwoman or Spiderman.
Is your position on what happened still the same?
See a lot of people shifting uncomfortably in their seats after that PJ policeman’s view was expressed.
Don’t understand why though. They still refused to answer questions - which seems very strange if (a) they are innocent and (b) they seriously wanted to help the PJ find their daughter.

You ask whether, “with the eyes of the world upon them” now, the twins are in danger.
My opinion and answer is yes, the twins are still in danger. I think there is little doubt of that.
They are SAFER NOW than they were before, and while they were in Portugal, because “the eyes of the world” are now “upon them.” It is not really the scrutiny that increases their safety, but the fact that (hopefully) other, non-parental adults are now concerned with their welfare, Kate can receive the kind of psychological help and support her diary and, indeed, her own Panorama remarks, indicate she needs, and Gerry has returned to work and presumably will be busy with duties.
But the twins are far from being as physically safe as the average child.
I am talking about real physical danger, and not the mental kind of damage that is surely inevitable as they grow older. They are living with two adults suspected of murdering, or accidentally killing, or perhaps even selling, their own child. This is NOT a safe environment.

Well the imploding family scene has been long discussed, and yet the twins remain with their parents. But who is going to answer their many questions as they grow. Ok most families have some slight skeletons in cupboards which maturity lets people cope with. But the upbringing the receive isn’t that going to affect even future generations, after all do the grandparents have any doubtful traits to answer for as they brought the parents up? Or are they viewed as a safe haven for the twins?
