Madeleine McCann: ‘Screaming Contradictions’, Scotland Yard And Francisco Marco Interviewed
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
SUNDAY EXPRESS (front page): “MADELEINE – News call for Scotland Yard probe”
Are Scotland Yard for hire? Benazir Bhutto. And McCann? Have the discovered who killed Rhys Jones yet?
“Retired Chief Superintendent Dai Davies, former head of the Yard’s Royal Protection unit, says that if the Yard can send detectives to probe the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan, then they should also fly to Portugal to try and solve the Madeleine mystery”
He says:
“The Portuguese investigation has quite simply not solved the crime and it is now looking increasingly likely that it will be shelved. I would suggest that this is the time to call on the Yard to take the lead and to get them to form a team of detectives to work on the case”
Retired copper suggests his old boys are the best – Read all about it!
GLASGOW SUNDAY MAIL: “Police Ready To Clear McCanns Over Maddie”
“Police in Portugal are set to clear Kate and Gerry McCann as suspects, it was claimed last night”
A fact claimed by “insiders” who say “officers did not have a shred of evidence against the 39-year-old couple”
The McCanns’ spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, says: “This report is extremely encouraging”
SUNDAY PEOPLE: “Kate and Gerry ‘in the clear’”
“Police do not have a shred of evidence against Gerry and Kate McCann and they are set to be cleared as suspects, it was claimed yesterday. The couple’s status as ‘arguidos’ in the case of missing daughter Maddie, four, will be lifted unless they make ‘screaming contradictions’ in a new police quiz, said Portugal paper Expresso”
How does Expresso know? The paper does not say
SUNDAY MIRROR: “McCann cops: No evidence”
“A review of the case by homicide experts from the Judicial Police has turned up no proof that Kate and Gerry McCann played a part in four-year-old Madeleine’s disappearance.
“Attorney General Fernando Pinto Montiero told respected Portuguese newspaper Expresso: ‘The couple’s legal status will be considered at the appropriate moment, depending on various elements still to be obtained’”
Says Expresso: “They will only remain arguidos (suspects) if there are screaming contradictions revealed in the answers to the letters sent to England”
DAILY STAR ON SUNDAY: “MCCANNS TO BE CLEARED”
“Last night the McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the sooner they are questioned the better”
He says: “There won’t be any screaming contradictions and hopefully the emphasis can then be put on finding Madeleine, who we believe is still alive”
Says the paper: “Legal letters outlining the 40 questions are to be sent to the Home Office this week. Interviews are then likely to be carried out by detectives from Leicestershire police, the McCanns’ local force”
Says Gerry McCann’s brother John McCann: “Any sensible person realises Madeleine was abducted. We didn’t anticipate being in this position after nine months”
THE SUNDAY TIMES: “Madeleine McCann and Metodo 3: Private eyes, public lies”
“Paid £50,000 a month to find Madeleine McCann, the Spanish detective Francisco Marco said he hoped to have her home for Christmas. He issued this photofit of a suspect last month; it set off a media frenzy, but Portuguese police say it has ‘no credibility’. Christine Toomey turns the tables on a private eye who is anything but…
An interview with Francisco Marco. His company is being paid £50,000 a month by the McCann’s fighting fund
“We won’t answer any questions about Maddie. Maddie is off limits – is that understood?” Marco’s cousin Jose Luis, another of the agency’s employees, warns me sternly”
But they are not the police. What can they not talk about the big case? It was Mr Franciso who told he’d find Madeleine by Christmas – last Christmas
“I cannot ask him to clarify what he did say, or whether talking about an ongoing investigation is potentially detrimental. Instead, I am left to discuss the matter with a handful of other private detective agencies in Barcelona, the private-eye capital of Spain. What they tell me is disturbing”
Marco walks in. Does he bring his Maddy dolly? And:
“Marco slaps on the table a 144-page pre-prepared dossier of articles written in the Spanish press about himself and M-3. He goes on to list some of those in the city he says I have already been speaking to about his company. Had my movements been monitored? If so, why would a private detective agency be interested in this at a time when they were supposed to be tirelessly searching for the most famous missing child in the world?”
Fame.
“In most of the many pictures of himself included in the material he hands me”
Metodo 3 is the most famous private detective agency in Europe
“He seems eager to please. He summons a female assistant on several occasions to bring me material, including a book he has recently written, to illustrate what he is talking about. Even when I make it clear this is not necessary – aware that these distractions eat into the time we have to talk – he insists, partly showing off”
Then:
“When I ask about his background, Marco summons her [secretary] to photocopy the first pages of his doctoral thesis on private investigation: he has a master’s degree and a PhD in penal law”
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “McCanns to be cleared as no evidence found”
Attorney General Fernando Pinto Montiero told Expresso: “The couple’s legal status will be considered at the appropriate moment, depending on various elements still to be obtained.”
Madeleine McCann: Money. Speculation. Sensation. A child is missing…

Gail Cooper is the one who saw and spoke with the suspicious looking man (bad imitation of George Harrison) in Praia da Luz more than a week before Madeleine disappeared. She reported to the police what she saw soon as Madeleine was missing. However, just last month, Team McCann releases sketches of the man and begins a search for him. The PJ allegedly had already ruled the man out.

I’ll re phrase it - do you think that Cooper and the two sisters who have presented themselves as witnesses/involved months and months after the event should be questioned by whoever does the questioning of T group?

Sorry, can someone do me a massive favor by telling me who this Cooper woman is? Apparently I’m incredibly far out of the loop?

I’ve copied and saved all their pages so even if they’re deleted, they’re safe and sound!
Some of the links to Anorak from the Findmadeleine site aren’t on their pages you can see. I can’t believe all the content of the site was Calum’s decision. Therefore, one can assume that Team McCann do read Anorak.

You are so right. There is so much we just cannot know and we don’t know which 10% to believe!
Even if the case is ’solved,’ we’ll never be sure of what the whole truth is or if the solution is even correct.
I give the Lindbergh baby kidnapping case as an example. Most official records of the case show that Bruno Richard Hauptmann, the man executed for the crime of the abduction and death of the baby, was guilty, but if you review the case on the website linked below, you would seriously doubt that the verdict was correct and wonder if Charles Lindbergh was himself responsible, as is put forth by the evidence gathered on the website. The amount of information collected is enormous and actual transcripts and recordings and other evidence are available for viewing on this incredibly thorough website:

Hi everyone, phew, that took some reading to catch up. Last night I went to bed quite excited as the rumour was that the pj were on the way to re-interview. It seems to have been nothing more than wishful thinking.
I think the public backlash from this botched investigation is going to be amazing, if the mccanns face no action.
Woe betide any britons holidaying having a child abducted (really abducted), because I can see this case setting up a whole new necessity for benchmarking foreign police investigations!

Yes, both Pennington and BAKER are/were MW nannies. Check Baker out here, in an article from October 07:

They don’t want you to know. They don’t have an office or place of work. The fund is just a “plaque on the wall” company with a registered office in London. There’s nobody there to talk to. If you donated and want to ask a question…forget it. It’s a money making machine that takes money in and you’re not allowed to ask anything about where your money goes or what it’s used for. They have no spokesman or manager to talk to. You can’t phone them and if you email them you get no response.
It bears all the hallmarks of a scam.
At least if a navvy knocks on your door and says he’ll tarmac your drive with some “leftover tarmac”, you can actually see and talk to the conman. In this case, it’s a one-way link to your money disappearing with no information whatsoever about where your money ended up and for what purpose.

Agree re British lawyers. Not sure if they’d be able to sit in if the interviews were conducted in portugal. But being interviewed in the Uk mens the McCann’s can’t get away with accusing the nasty PJ of framing them etc.
The problem with believing press reports re blood, washing, sealing off apt etc. Is it’s all contradictory. For example, one can cite the nothern european blood on the wall, or the blood behind the settee, or even fluid indicating a neck injury from falling down the outside steps. And so on. The reality is we just don’t know. And isn’t that probably the point? There’s nothing the McCann’s would like more than to know what the evidence is!
Even the (can’t remember who) guy from the PJ said 10% of the information leaked to the press is true, the rest 90% soap opera/rubbish, or words to that effect. Same with apt not being properly searched initially, being let out to tourists, being let out to undercover PJ. Who washed what etc etc.
So arguing (sorry debating!) about it doesn’t really get us anywhere.
The only thing we can be sure of is, rogatory letters, arguidos, and Madleine dissapeared. and of course, McCann behaviour post disappearance.
Re Coolandcalm claiming people will be dissuaded from coming forward as a result of cooperman saga is silly. She did come forward, PJ checked her statement out and interviewed the guy. What was ridiculous was the McCann’s manipulation re pseudo police press conference, sketch etc nine months or so after her claims had already been checked out.
IMO blah

I have seen photos of a sealed apartment on May 4, as well forensic people [in white suits] searching and also bringing in dogs. Thy apparently didn’t release it till June 7, implicating it was being checked for more than a month ….
————————
We really don’t know how thorough of a job the PJ did and how long they were actively combing the apartment for evidence, even though they did hold onto possession of the apartment for more than a month. Obviously, they did not find all the evidence during that time. Some of the evidence gathered occurred after that period, with the assistance of the British cadaver and blood specialist dogs and their handlers. Perhaps the PJ did as much evidence collecting as could be expected under the circumstances, as they would have for any other investigation and the use of the dogs was beyond normal investigative procedures. However, if they had held onto the apartment until the crime of Madeleine’s disappearance was solved or archived, the crime scene would certainly have been less tampered with, and it would have been obvious that it was not the cleaners who washed the curtains, floors, etc. (Although if the blood on the curtains came from a previous occupant who injured himself, before the McCanns arrived, then I’m sure the curtains would have been laundered prior to renting it out again.)

The “new” site links to a folder called /ns/news and has only 2 news items in there.

Actually if you check post 143 you”ll see that Kate is not too bothered about bookings because
her Apartment is primarily for her Family and Friends.
It appears the Portugese are not coming to PDL because of the publicity and scaremongering
so bookings are down according to Katy.
Why you think I should get involved, I don”t know.

The official Findmadeleine website was recently upgraded and had a changed look and appearance. Essentially it’s a new design.
But get this - parts of the old site are still there and interesting remnants are visible:
http://www.findmadeleine.com/news/fund.asp
A website is a folder on the server and the /news folder is a sub-folder off the main domain or root folder. When you publish (copy files from your PC to the server), if you don’t explicitly delete unused folders, they remain there - visible to the world. This goof means we can still see this interesting page from early May. I’m looking for more pages but I knew you’d find that one worth reading.
Amongst other things it has:
‘Madeleine’s Fund’
c/o The International Family Law Group
26 Southampton Street
Covent Garden
London
WC2E 7RS
Internet donations can be made into the following account:
‘Madeleine’s Fund : Leaving No Stone Unturned’
I’m actually thinking that it wasn’t as bad a situation as the TeGenero thing but was perhaps more of a knee-jerk reaction because possibly an AstraZeneca drug was involved in the shenanigans. It could even be something more along the lines of “what on earth were you doing with that drug in your possession?” Of course this is mere speculation and guesswork.
Incidentally why did John McCann give up his job with AstraZeneca? Isn’t that mysterious in itself?

I agree the McCanns HAVE to answer the questions, but think their Lawyers have been
very clever by forcing the interviewing to be done in the U.K. rather than Portugal. This
way, they are on hand to advise and maybe sit in on the interviews. Had it been their
Portugese Lawyer present, in Portugal they may not have been best served.
I would also have thought that with regard to the “Witness ” statements it is very unlikely that anyone will remember what they said 9 months ago, so their original statement should
presumably stand. Also, the discrepancies may not be amongst themselves but rather other
witnesses ie Waiters?Bar Staff IMO of course!!
