Madeleine McCann: ‘Screaming Contradictions’, Scotland Yard And Francisco Marco Interviewed
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
SUNDAY EXPRESS (front page): “MADELEINE – News call for Scotland Yard probe”
Are Scotland Yard for hire? Benazir Bhutto. And McCann? Have the discovered who killed Rhys Jones yet?
“Retired Chief Superintendent Dai Davies, former head of the Yard’s Royal Protection unit, says that if the Yard can send detectives to probe the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan, then they should also fly to Portugal to try and solve the Madeleine mystery”
He says:
“The Portuguese investigation has quite simply not solved the crime and it is now looking increasingly likely that it will be shelved. I would suggest that this is the time to call on the Yard to take the lead and to get them to form a team of detectives to work on the case”
Retired copper suggests his old boys are the best – Read all about it!
GLASGOW SUNDAY MAIL: “Police Ready To Clear McCanns Over Maddie”
“Police in Portugal are set to clear Kate and Gerry McCann as suspects, it was claimed last night”
A fact claimed by “insiders” who say “officers did not have a shred of evidence against the 39-year-old couple”
The McCanns’ spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, says: “This report is extremely encouraging”
SUNDAY PEOPLE: “Kate and Gerry ‘in the clear’”
“Police do not have a shred of evidence against Gerry and Kate McCann and they are set to be cleared as suspects, it was claimed yesterday. The couple’s status as ‘arguidos’ in the case of missing daughter Maddie, four, will be lifted unless they make ‘screaming contradictions’ in a new police quiz, said Portugal paper Expresso”
How does Expresso know? The paper does not say
SUNDAY MIRROR: “McCann cops: No evidence”
“A review of the case by homicide experts from the Judicial Police has turned up no proof that Kate and Gerry McCann played a part in four-year-old Madeleine’s disappearance.
“Attorney General Fernando Pinto Montiero told respected Portuguese newspaper Expresso: ‘The couple’s legal status will be considered at the appropriate moment, depending on various elements still to be obtained’”
Says Expresso: “They will only remain arguidos (suspects) if there are screaming contradictions revealed in the answers to the letters sent to England”
DAILY STAR ON SUNDAY: “MCCANNS TO BE CLEARED”
“Last night the McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the sooner they are questioned the better”
He says: “There won’t be any screaming contradictions and hopefully the emphasis can then be put on finding Madeleine, who we believe is still alive”
Says the paper: “Legal letters outlining the 40 questions are to be sent to the Home Office this week. Interviews are then likely to be carried out by detectives from Leicestershire police, the McCanns’ local force”
Says Gerry McCann’s brother John McCann: “Any sensible person realises Madeleine was abducted. We didn’t anticipate being in this position after nine months”
THE SUNDAY TIMES: “Madeleine McCann and Metodo 3: Private eyes, public lies”
“Paid £50,000 a month to find Madeleine McCann, the Spanish detective Francisco Marco said he hoped to have her home for Christmas. He issued this photofit of a suspect last month; it set off a media frenzy, but Portuguese police say it has ‘no credibility’. Christine Toomey turns the tables on a private eye who is anything but…
An interview with Francisco Marco. His company is being paid £50,000 a month by the McCann’s fighting fund
“We won’t answer any questions about Maddie. Maddie is off limits – is that understood?” Marco’s cousin Jose Luis, another of the agency’s employees, warns me sternly”
But they are not the police. What can they not talk about the big case? It was Mr Franciso who told he’d find Madeleine by Christmas – last Christmas
“I cannot ask him to clarify what he did say, or whether talking about an ongoing investigation is potentially detrimental. Instead, I am left to discuss the matter with a handful of other private detective agencies in Barcelona, the private-eye capital of Spain. What they tell me is disturbing”
Marco walks in. Does he bring his Maddy dolly? And:
“Marco slaps on the table a 144-page pre-prepared dossier of articles written in the Spanish press about himself and M-3. He goes on to list some of those in the city he says I have already been speaking to about his company. Had my movements been monitored? If so, why would a private detective agency be interested in this at a time when they were supposed to be tirelessly searching for the most famous missing child in the world?”
Fame.
“In most of the many pictures of himself included in the material he hands me”
Metodo 3 is the most famous private detective agency in Europe
“He seems eager to please. He summons a female assistant on several occasions to bring me material, including a book he has recently written, to illustrate what he is talking about. Even when I make it clear this is not necessary – aware that these distractions eat into the time we have to talk – he insists, partly showing off”
Then:
“When I ask about his background, Marco summons her [secretary] to photocopy the first pages of his doctoral thesis on private investigation: he has a master’s degree and a PhD in penal law”
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “McCanns to be cleared as no evidence found”
Attorney General Fernando Pinto Montiero told Expresso: “The couple’s legal status will be considered at the appropriate moment, depending on various elements still to be obtained.”
Madeleine McCann: Money. Speculation. Sensation. A child is missing…

There is no policing of that Good Governance Guide. It is written and administered by a charity. It is a voluntary guide and as such there can be no punishment for not adhering to its policies and aims. The only possible consequence of not complying can be some kind of expulsion from the people who “sign up” to its aims. It isn’t for example a membership like say “ABTA” (a voluntary but strictly enforced code) or even stricter - the Financial Services Act (law).
The Good Governance Guide is no better than those restaurants that display plaques in their establishment claiming membership of some little-known food guide.
I noticed you used the word “trust” in your posting. Remember that Madeleine’s Fund is a private limited company - in no way is it a charity OR trust. It is possibly using the word “Fund” in its name illegally because “Fund” is a protected name in the Companies Act.
The stated aim of Madeleine’s Fund: Leaving No Stone Unturned Limited is to find Madeleine. It has no other fundamental aim. Incredible as this sounds, it is no different than someone setting up a company and calling it “Lord Lucan’s Fund: Leaving No Stone Unturned” or…not as frivolous “Steve Fosset’s Fund: Leaving No Stone Unturned”.
In each of those cases, you could legally set up those companies and accept donations along similar lines to Madeleine’s Fund. Steve Fossett armbands, posters etc. Lord Lucan “balloon events” would be popular as there would be an incredible number of balloons!
As daft as this sounds, it is no crazier than the Madeleine Fund.

I’m sure Calum has received briefings about the site and knows more than he lets on.
I still find it remarkable that they’d want to suppress details on how to contact the various police forces via freephone numbers while leaving their premium rate M3 number on there.

381 jo says (February 10th, 2008 at 6:41 pm):
HOW can we help?
REPLY: Not an easy one, but between us all we should:
* Keep in the public eye the possibility that Madeleine was not abducted
* Publish and circulate in whatever way we can our reasons for doubting the McCanns and ‘Tapas 9′ version of events
* Keep pressure on the media to reflect the balance of opinion about this case
* Keep pressure on all official bodies who are concerned in some way with this case e.g. the government, the Home Secretary, the N.S.P.C.C., the General Medical Council, the PJ, etc. (We intend to publish exchanges of correspondence between us and these bodies)
* Call for the law to be clarified so as to make it crystal clear that you DON’T leave young childen on their own UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
In addition, we hope when we open our website to have a section title: ‘Your Views’, in which we will publish, either under a signature or anonymously, any contribution about this case which comes from a McCann-sceptic perspective. Views, opinions, facts, analyses, research, links etc. Hopefully it will not duplicate the excellent work of other sites like Stevo’s and McCannfiles. We will not have a forum, but will publish all worthwhile contributions on the subject of what happened to Madeleine and the wider implications of the case.
I hope to convert the ‘21 Reasons’ into a document that could be conveniently circulated by e-mail e.g. to friends and family. So far as I am aware, no newspaper has produced such a summary of reasons for doubting the abduction claim.
I think, in summary, we need to express and articulate our doubts more to the general public, as to a large extent we are talking to ourselves here

Are you deliberately being obtuse or trying to pick an argument? If you don’t understand where this comment of mine is coming from re-review what you’ve posted and the responses you’ve received to them to maybe understand why communication has become so confusing between you and other posters.
I’ll disengage from responding to you, for now, anyway.

From SOSMaddie
Dai Davis makes a fool of himself again :Scotland Yard is already on the case.
10.02.2008
“I do not see what Scotland Yard can do more”
“That is ridiculous! I do not see what Scotland Yard can do more because we have participated in the survey since the first moments,” says a senior police officer called to the Leicestershire comment on the statements of former officer responsible for the protection of royal family, Dai Davies on Sunday Express.
Dai Davies, now a consultant for various private companies, argues that it is time “to call that Scotland Yard take the lead” Investigations, Portugal, the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, “analyzing the potential suspects and questioning if necessary. ”
It Dai Davies, an acquaintance of Clarence Mitchell of time or it was BBC correspondent with the royal family, which had already taken the defense of Gerry and Kate McCann in several British media, consider that the fact that the couple had left her children alone in the apartment on several occasions and for several hours, was not an abandonment.
“Whatever it is the outcome of this investigation, I believe that the most urgent task is to give our Portuguese counterparts the opportunity to continue their work interviewing witnesses they deem necessary,” said the same officer in Leicester.
Method 3: “sniffers fly”
Today, the British daily Times returns to Metodo 3, the Spanish detective agency, Marita Fernandez Lado hired by McCann, explaining that the choice of the couple would have been made according to the linguistic and cultural liaison between the Spain and Portugal.
“If we had taken the British with their big boots, or, even worse, Americans, we would have slammed the door in the figure, and it is very likely that we would be accused of having obstructed the investigation because, technically, it is illegal in Portugal to conduct a parallel investigation, “would have explained to Clarence Mitchell Times.
According to the spokesman for McCann, the National Director of the Judicial Police, Alipio Ribeiro, “is as if he was not aware,” ignoring 3 Metodo seen their insignificance.
The article in the Times - excellent I must admit-reveals that Francisco Marco, one of the agency, said that the amount of 70,000 euros paid monthly by the fund Madeleine, is not high, but purely “symbolic “.
The Times still puts his finger on the lack of results from Metodo 3 and liaison for the agency to several media Barcelona in Spain, with Marco Francisco, which claims to have an affair to remember.

Of course, naturally you are welcome to make your opinions known. But you must expect that people are also able to respond with opinions about your opinions, as well. Debate or argument–it’s all in the perspective, I guess.
You won’t be in agreement with all posters here in Anorak. No one is. That’s just the nature of the beast.

may be Ribeiro was actually right saying is was precipitated to make them arguidos.
It has given them impunity, protection etc….. hopefully the PJ will play their hidden card(s)
We are all debating and speculating but in actual fact the only ones to really know are the PJ and the mcFools.

I think speculation is only natural considering the amount of unanswered questions about the case and the fact that the police officially suspect the McCanns involved with the disappearance of their daughter. People want to understand what possible motivations could be behind the initial act(s) and the subsequent behaviors after the fact.
If the McCanns had not chosen the route of in-your-face publicity and deliberate PR spin, then I might agree with you. Howevever, when someone (the McCanns and their team and the media) is forcefully shoving at you what they think you should believe and it doesn’t mesh with your own observations, it is only right that you should question WHY? and try to discover your own answers.
I do think everyone should use caution and keep fact and opinion quite separate from each other while discussing the case, however.

Firstly, you are posting on a site that is for people to air their views and opinions, you are never ever going to be able to stop people making assumptions.
Secondly, in my first post there was no assumption, just a general comment.

Stevo,
The ‘Code of Good Governance’ seems to have been written by a government-backed and financed quango called ‘Governance Hub’.
As far as I can see from its website:
http://www.governancehub.org.uk/index.html
no-one enforces it.
IF it were proved that the parents were in some way involved with Madeleine’s ‘disappearance, or knew about it, then prima facie the fund would be a total fraud and the police would be called in quicker than you can say ‘Clarence Mitchell’, or ‘obtaining a pecuniary advantage by deception’ (Theft Act 1968).
