Madeleine McCann: ‘Screaming Contradictions’, Scotland Yard And Francisco Marco Interviewed
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
SUNDAY EXPRESS (front page): “MADELEINE – News call for Scotland Yard probe”
Are Scotland Yard for hire? Benazir Bhutto. And McCann? Have the discovered who killed Rhys Jones yet?
“Retired Chief Superintendent Dai Davies, former head of the Yard’s Royal Protection unit, says that if the Yard can send detectives to probe the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan, then they should also fly to Portugal to try and solve the Madeleine mystery”
He says:
“The Portuguese investigation has quite simply not solved the crime and it is now looking increasingly likely that it will be shelved. I would suggest that this is the time to call on the Yard to take the lead and to get them to form a team of detectives to work on the case”
Retired copper suggests his old boys are the best – Read all about it!
GLASGOW SUNDAY MAIL: “Police Ready To Clear McCanns Over Maddie”
“Police in Portugal are set to clear Kate and Gerry McCann as suspects, it was claimed last night”
A fact claimed by “insiders” who say “officers did not have a shred of evidence against the 39-year-old couple”
The McCanns’ spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, says: “This report is extremely encouraging”
SUNDAY PEOPLE: “Kate and Gerry ‘in the clear’”
“Police do not have a shred of evidence against Gerry and Kate McCann and they are set to be cleared as suspects, it was claimed yesterday. The couple’s status as ‘arguidos’ in the case of missing daughter Maddie, four, will be lifted unless they make ‘screaming contradictions’ in a new police quiz, said Portugal paper Expresso”
How does Expresso know? The paper does not say
SUNDAY MIRROR: “McCann cops: No evidence”
“A review of the case by homicide experts from the Judicial Police has turned up no proof that Kate and Gerry McCann played a part in four-year-old Madeleine’s disappearance.
“Attorney General Fernando Pinto Montiero told respected Portuguese newspaper Expresso: ‘The couple’s legal status will be considered at the appropriate moment, depending on various elements still to be obtained’”
Says Expresso: “They will only remain arguidos (suspects) if there are screaming contradictions revealed in the answers to the letters sent to England”
DAILY STAR ON SUNDAY: “MCCANNS TO BE CLEARED”
“Last night the McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the sooner they are questioned the better”
He says: “There won’t be any screaming contradictions and hopefully the emphasis can then be put on finding Madeleine, who we believe is still alive”
Says the paper: “Legal letters outlining the 40 questions are to be sent to the Home Office this week. Interviews are then likely to be carried out by detectives from Leicestershire police, the McCanns’ local force”
Says Gerry McCann’s brother John McCann: “Any sensible person realises Madeleine was abducted. We didn’t anticipate being in this position after nine months”
THE SUNDAY TIMES: “Madeleine McCann and Metodo 3: Private eyes, public lies”
“Paid £50,000 a month to find Madeleine McCann, the Spanish detective Francisco Marco said he hoped to have her home for Christmas. He issued this photofit of a suspect last month; it set off a media frenzy, but Portuguese police say it has ‘no credibility’. Christine Toomey turns the tables on a private eye who is anything but…
An interview with Francisco Marco. His company is being paid £50,000 a month by the McCann’s fighting fund
“We won’t answer any questions about Maddie. Maddie is off limits – is that understood?” Marco’s cousin Jose Luis, another of the agency’s employees, warns me sternly”
But they are not the police. What can they not talk about the big case? It was Mr Franciso who told he’d find Madeleine by Christmas – last Christmas
“I cannot ask him to clarify what he did say, or whether talking about an ongoing investigation is potentially detrimental. Instead, I am left to discuss the matter with a handful of other private detective agencies in Barcelona, the private-eye capital of Spain. What they tell me is disturbing”
Marco walks in. Does he bring his Maddy dolly? And:
“Marco slaps on the table a 144-page pre-prepared dossier of articles written in the Spanish press about himself and M-3. He goes on to list some of those in the city he says I have already been speaking to about his company. Had my movements been monitored? If so, why would a private detective agency be interested in this at a time when they were supposed to be tirelessly searching for the most famous missing child in the world?”
Fame.
“In most of the many pictures of himself included in the material he hands me”
Metodo 3 is the most famous private detective agency in Europe
“He seems eager to please. He summons a female assistant on several occasions to bring me material, including a book he has recently written, to illustrate what he is talking about. Even when I make it clear this is not necessary – aware that these distractions eat into the time we have to talk – he insists, partly showing off”
Then:
“When I ask about his background, Marco summons her [secretary] to photocopy the first pages of his doctoral thesis on private investigation: he has a master’s degree and a PhD in penal law”
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “McCanns to be cleared as no evidence found”
Attorney General Fernando Pinto Montiero told Expresso: “The couple’s legal status will be considered at the appropriate moment, depending on various elements still to be obtained.”
Madeleine McCann: Money. Speculation. Sensation. A child is missing…

Was Tony’s offending post deleted already? I don’t remember reading it. Can you legally state the name of the case he referred to or the defendant’s name?
I’m sorry Tony crossed the line and hope he is able to make amends to return to Anorak.

I understand. Also remember when my parents left one evening and me, very responsible person [12], was responsible for just one hour: my 8-year-old brother tried to connect 2 lamps at the same time with bare threads into the plug. The house was dark and his hands were BLACK. We can laugh about it now, because he wasn’t burned, just metal particles on his hands… Difficult to draw a line, impossible to make a law… But for Ch’s sake 2 & 3 year olds …

Maybe it is just impossible and wrong to outlaw any risky things for children:
no horseriding, no bicycles, no staying at home alone, no high climbing frames at playgrounds, no touching by teachers(even for a friendly hug)… no swimming , enough!

It seems that John McCann didn’t resign or lose his job at AstraZeneca - he appears to be on a long term leave of absence.
That sounds like a very benevolent employer!

Chatelaine,
obviously, I am not saying that it was all right !
I was just saying that a law which makes illegal leaving any child under 10 alone might be wrong to issue! I only thought that, for example, some well behaved 7 year old girl can stay at home happily for 1-2 hours occasionally if given all instructions and if she looks forward to it, and if a helpful adult is available immediately in case something is needed (like a neighbour-friend).
However, for some other 7year old such “experiment” even once can spell a disaster, so one rule for everyone would not work!

What was the fundamental issue? Was it that there have been charges made in the case Tony posted about? I don’t know the law on this aspect. Does the fact charges have been made alter rules on reporting on cases? (I mean generally…)
agw: Yes. In this case the information is both prejudicial to the charged person and the publisher and could lead to any publication or website owner plus the author facing the severest contempt of court charges. Terms of imprisonment are possible. This is so tricky even an explanation is dangerous. This is NOT a new warning and Mr Bennett was aware of our concerns sometime ago.

Tony,
I am coming to thinking that I might disagree with “never leave children under any circumstances”…
I may be wrong, but, I think, some children can be very mature and disciplined even when very young, and, as long as they are left when fully awake, conscious and happy to stay alone, and for a short time, and not responsible for anyone else(not like M.), it can be a good training in the skill of life. Tony,
I am coming to thinking that I might disagree with “never leave children under any circumstances”…
I may be wrong, but, I think, some children can be very mature and disciplined even when very young, and, as long as they are left when fully awake, conscious and happy to stay alone, and for a short time, and not responsible for anyone else(not like M.), it can be a good training in the skill of life. And only a parent will feel whether the child is ready (the child must be given full instuctions re.any kind of emergency, know how to use telephone and operate the door, where and to whom to go, and the place should be securely locked with extra exit usable without a key, from inside, and the child should receive training re. how to do everything, not to use electric appliances, etc.), and the parent should be fully responsible for any consequences, obviously. In many countries children as young as six stay at home for short periods, and feel proud and responsible for their actions and behave really well , and receive very good experience overall. Outlawing that would be wrong, in my opinion, because then even walking to school must be outlawed as far more dangerous.
To become a fully responsible adult at 18, a person should have a lot of experience and training. Shielding our children fully might lead to trouble when finally “free”?
I support your actions re. Mc., so my words are just some expression of personal thoughts. ???

Earlier this evening Tony Bennett made reference to an ongoing criminal case in which he revealed certain information. The nature of that information would have been prejudicial to the course of justice in that it may have affected the conduct of a trial.
Charges have been made in the case at issue and Mr Bennett as a “solicitor” knows very well the penalties for Anorak if such information is released into the public domain by us. It is not a legitimate defence to say the information is available elsewhere.
This is also the second time this particular set of circumstance have occurred with this poster.
I therefore have no other position to take than a complete block which is now in place.
If Mr Bennett cares to contact the Editor@anorak.co.uk and gives categorical assurances he will in future exercise correct diligence and care, then the position can be reviewed. If he he does not give those assurances, I regret the parting of the ways will be permanent.
The well-being of this site can not be allowed to be prejudiced by either, the accidental, or deliberate challenges to rules governing trial procedures in the United Kingdom.
