Muslims Behave Like The Royal Family
GOVERNMENT Minister Phil Woolas makes noise about Muslims marrying first cousins and, as he claims, leading to increased rates of birth defects.
Says Shobna Gulati, on Matthew Wright’s TV show: “Why has he singled them out and not the Royal Family.”
Prince Edward was not on the show to offer a reply…

There has been a lot of in-breeding amongst royalty. It is also interesting that when it has suited some of them, eg Henry v111, they played the Bible card prohibiting incest. Henry v111 put away Catherine of Aragon on the basis that a man should not lie with his brother’s wife.
Could there be an opportunity here for insurance companies if people who wish to marry close family are legally obliged to insure their family for the treatment of genetic defects on the NHS?
Could this be what the Archbishop means by accommodation of Sharia law? Don’t answer this because I know (I think) that Sharia law does not recommend close family marriages and I know that non-muslim families also marry close to the family.

3 I don’t know whether or not people are being counselled about it in private - prevention is better than cure as they say. It is and has been a problem for the NHS as well as the families concerned. Did you hear Ann Cryer discuss this?

Interesting to question what is incest? However, defined close family fecund sexual relationships are more likely to produce children with genetic defects (especially when multipled by generations of intra-family marriages). Interesting that this is reaching media attention only now when I first heard about genetic problems linked to close family marriages in the Asian communities about 10 years ago.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incest
“Incest is defined as sexual intercourse or relations any form of sexual activity between closely related persons, especially within the nuclear family. …The incest taboo is one of the most common of all taboos. Most modern societies have legal or social restrictions on closely consanguineous marriages.
Which family members constitute those covered by the incest prohibition is determined by the society in which the persons live. Some societies consider it to include only those related by birth or those who live in the same household; other societies further include those related by adoption, marriage, or clan.”

My grandparents were first cousins and their grandparents were first cousins (on my Mother’s side) and most of that side of the family doesn’t make it past 55.
They’re from an Island in Scotland - I wont say which one - but everyone knows that in-breeding is a bad thing.
It’s a bit insulting for outsiders to bring it up publicly though. Much better to council against it in private.

If it is wrong for commoners it must be wrong for royalty. But it is not wrong or illegal just a tragedy for the families affected, and such tragedies are more likely to happen if cousins and other close family are marrying over several generations. They used to say ‘incest is best’ when I was young, but fortunately I had no direct experience of it!
