The government couldn't afford the debt so the politicians and the wealthy converted their savings to Swiss Francs before creating a bunch of money out of thin air. This devalued their currency and wiped out the middle class savings overnight. The path to recovery for them was and has been indeed difficult (also think about pre-WWII Germany). We are going down the same road by spending too much; borrowing too much; IOUing from the Social Security Trust Fund (and any trust fund they can find); and printing more money to prop up one market sector bubble after another.
