Madeleine McCann: Lying To Children, Ian McEwan And Questions
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR: “McCann pals face new quiz”
“It is understood Jane Tanner, Russell O’Brien and David Payne, three of the Tapas Seven, may be questioned over alleged inconsistencies in their statements”
“Understood” and “may.” Such are the facts. Such is the reporting
Say the McCanns’ family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “There is no suggestion Kate and Gerry will be re-interviewed”
And “suggestion”
DAILY RECORD: “One Last Try To Get Maddie Answers”
“Staff at the resort where Madeleine McCann vanished have again been quizzed by detectives. It comes as they prepare to re-interview pals of Kate and Gerry McCann in a last-ditch bid to crack the case”
Anyone we know questioned?
“Pool cleaner Luis Antonio, the husband of suspect Robert Murat’s girlfriend Michaela Walczuch, was one of five questioned in Praia da Luz”
Any reason why they were quizzed once more?
A judicial source tells Portuguese newspaper 24 Horas: “Several police interviews have been repeated. The statements are being analysed to try to find any lead that could result in a new line of investigation”
Analysing statements, eh. Technical stuff…
In his internet blog yesterday, Gerry McCann vowed not to give up looking for his young daughter, adding: “We hope the police are similarly determined”
DAILY EXPRESS: “POLICE LAST CHANCE TO FIND MADELEINE”
“Five staff members who were at the Ocean Club complex on the night she went missing have been quizzed in recent days as pressure mounts to conclude the investigation”
Why those five? Which five? The WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER does not say
THE SUN: “Cops’ final bid to solve Maddie”
Michaela Walczuch “who denies any involvement in Maddie’s disappearance – was allegedly spotted in Zaio, Morocco, on June 15, moments after a girl resembling Madeleine was seen being dragged away by an African woman”
Three of the McCanns’ freins witll be spoken to by police.
A “source” says: “It sounded like they were concerned about timeline inconsistencies. But if you have nine people not wearing watches, it would be suspicious if their times matched exactly”
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “Lying to children”
“From white lies to whoppers, vagueness with the truth is part of parenthood. But as Katie Tait learns from one psychologist, deceiving children is never justified”
Recently I told Kitty, our youngest child, that the police car had pulled us over because she was screaming in the back of the car (in fact I was, stupidly, speeding, but partly as a result of her noise). She is now mousey-quiet on journeys. My caprice over the tooth fairy has reached such an extent that the correspondence between “Molly” and my daughter Agnes fills two whole shoe boxes.
Then there are the areas that I don’t really want them to know the whole truth about. Will they get scared if I tell them that Madeleine McCann, whose picture they have seen everywhere, was taken from her bed? What about the news stories of dogs biting children to death? Will they ever go near next door’s puppy again? To me, vagueness with the truth is part of being a human being and certainly part of being a parent. But apparently, I am deeply wrong.
Maybe Katie’s children can read the truth in her article?
THE AGE (Aus): “The private and the public”
An interview with Ian McEwan, the author: “Journalists rang him because the disappearance of four-year-old Madeleine bore a dark similarity to the plot of his 1987 novel, The Child in Time, when a father has his three-year old girl stolen from him in a supermarket”
DVDTOWN: “GONE BABY GONE”
If you’re thinking that this film was a quick knockoff inspired by the real-life Madeleine McCann case–the little girl who disappeared from her family’s Portugal vacation home while her mom and dad were at a party not far away–it’s really just another case of life imitating art. Lehane’s novel about a four-year-old girl who turns up missing under similar circumstances was published way back in 1994.

blimey i reckon about 99% of laws in this country are not enforced. The point is if there is a law in place and something happens to a child then the bloody parents of that child should be held accountable… example mr and mrs mcbastards

I am not British, so I have no right to interfere with your laws, Red Rooster. But it is important that a law should be realistic, all people working in that field will tell you, otherwise it will not be possible to enforce it, and there is nothing worse that a law which isn’t enforced. So, for the the sake of efficiency, I think it is daft to forbid parents to leave a child ever alone until he reaches the age of 12, and make criminals of them if they do.
Where I live, people who leave their children unattended at night are considered really bad parents, but it is common to send children aged, say 10, to school on their own, if the school isn’t too far, and the road not dangerous. They like it.
Most children normally go through a very reasonable stage between about 9 and 12. It is the age when they discover games, instead of play, and they get interested in rules. Then is the time to teach them to gain some autonomy.
Too late when they become adolescents, and enjoy courting danger.

Authorities: Girl, 4, Invents Abduction
Thursday, November 22, 2007
SANTA ANA, Calif. — Deputies began a search and even questioned a man after a 4-year-old girl reported an attempted abduction before she admitted she made the whole thing up, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
The girl said a man with spiked hair and a dragon tattoo approached her on a playground Tuesday and showed her a gun tucked in his waistband, sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said. Authorities dispatched eight police cars, a helicopter and a dozen armed officers to find the suspect and even interviewed a man with spiked hair during a four-hour hunt, he said.
But the child’s story changed repeatedly during the day and she finally admitted to inventing the attempted kidnapping to get back at her mother, Amormino said. The mother had briefly left her daughter unsupervised in a gated playground in mobile home park where the family lives and the child was scared, he said.
Amormino said authorities were stunned that a child so young could provide such vivid details about something that didn’t happen.
“In 28 years in law enforcement, I have never had a 4-year-old make up a story like this,” he said Wednesday. “It says something about what television is doing to our children.”
Investigators cannot charge the child, but may suggest that her parents get her counseling, Amormino said.

Troubled’ girl invented stalker
Published: Thursday, January 17, 2008
The first hint something wasn’t right was in the 11-year-old girl’s extremely detailed description of her would-be abductor.
A few interviews later, the truth came out — the girl had concocted the entire story of a red-haired man trying to kidnap her as she walked to school.
Police revealed Wednesday that the girl admitted to making up the tale two days after she claimed a man had been stalking her.
Laurie Pawluck, with son Nathaniel, says despite the made-up abduction, “you can never discredit a child.”View Larger
“At the end of the day, it’s one of those situations of crying wolf for attention,” Staff Sgt. Steve Lorne said.
“We have a bit of a troubled youth here.”
The girl had told police that a man had followed her home as she walked along Templehill Road N.E. at about noon Monday.
The girl said the stranger eventually caught her, grabbed her by the hair and covered her mouth with his hand.
She claimed to have wrestled free and ran to nearby Guy Weadick Elementary School to safety, where police were called.
The preteen provided police with a detailed description of a red-haired man who she said had tried to abduct her, but police said they are no longer looking for any suspects.
The description was so thorough — even including a scratch on the imagined abductor’s car — that police became suspicious and eventually prodded the girl enough to find out the story was phony. The girl won’t be charged, Lorne said.
Lorne defended the police service’s decision to warn the public about the apparent stalker, saying officers were working with the best information they had at the time.
“We had no choice,” he said. “She did appear to be a very good witness.”
Crystal Freeman, who was picking up her five-year-old daughter from Guy Weadick School Wednesday afternoon, said it’s possible now that other children won’t be believed.
“It’s not very good to hear that she made it up,” Freeman said.
Laurie Pawluck, meanwhile, said she would still believe a child who claims to be victimized.
“You can never discredit a child,” she said as she picked up her son.
Mount Royal College criminologist John Winterdyk said the false alarm likely wouldn’t prevent too many parents from taking warnings seriously.
“The public to a large extent will hopefully recognize it’s better safe than sorry,” he said.

Parents Stage Car Accident to Cover Up Child Abuse Death of Four-Year-Old
by Anne-Marie Nichols on December 22nd, 2007
In North Las Vegas, Nevada, Trevor Carter, 21, and his girlfriend Amber Scott, 24, were arrested in the death of Scott’s four-year-old son Trenton Quick. Carter is being held on charges of first-degree murder and child abuse. Scott is booked on three counts of child abuse and neglect. Police believe they staged a car accident to cover up the boy’s death.
The coroner’s office said the boy’s death was a homicide caused by blunt abdominal trauma, but details of the child abuse have not been released.
Scott’s coworkers say Trenton had an accident in his pants, and that Carter called her at work to complain. They could hear Carter screaming in the background about how he’s not putting up with her kid shitting in his pants anymore. Scott told him to clean it up and she’d take care of it when she got home.
Scott’s coworker said that Trenton told his mom that he got “whooped real bad.” Then not too long after that phone call, Scott got another call at work about a car accident and that her little boy was dead.
Even though she wasn’t in the car at the time, police believe Scott ignored the abuse and that it was an ongoing problem in the house. The other two children in the home at the time are now in protective custody.
Aren’t you tired of hearing about women’s abusive boyfriends killing their kids? I certainly am. Poor Trenton.

Shalinda Glass Faked Son’s Abduction after His Death at Boyfriend’s Hands
by admin on December 5th, 2006
Geontae GlassKeith Tipton and mgraber sent me this story earlier today about Geontae Glass of Gadsden, Alabama, who was reported missing after his mother Shalinda Glass said she left him in the car to go get some juice. I was all set to write up a post about what a neglectful mother Glass was for leaving her kid in the car. Haven’t we seen enough horror stories about that lately? But then hot tipper Rebecca wrote in with the horrifying follow-up. Poor Geontae was never missing: his mother’s boyfriend, Kevin Andrew Towles, apparently killed him - and Shalinda staged the carjacking to cover it up.
Early reports are that Kevin Andre Towles was an abusive a******, and that he beat Shalinda. You know what? I don’t give a xxxx. How could she? How could she be so disloyal to her own son that she would betray him even in death?! Her first instinct when she discovered that Towles had killed her beautiful five-year-old boy should have been to pick up the nearest heavy object and bash that fucker’s head in. Helping hide his body? That’s cold-blooded. That’s a big fat Judas kiss planted on Geontae’s cold forehead.
Oh, and where was Geontae’s body, you may ask? Inside of his mother’s car, locked up in Towle’s garage. Real ******* bright, huh? The property was one of several “safe houses” that Towles owned. Apparently, Mr. Badass was some sort of narcotics dealer. Exactly the kind of person I’d want my kids growing up around.
What a beautiful, beautiful little boy. How sad that he had to be cursed with such a failure of a parent.

I agree! I think age under 8 a definate no no, 9-10 a descretion of time, place, etc…. under 15 not over night.
Under 5s is never, under 5-8s letting them pop next door, walk to post box, with in 20 metres etc….adult at ear, eye length ,
adult washing car outside, by 12 you have to be able to travel on a bus, go to a shop, and stay by yourself for an hour during the day.
It needs a vote!

Isn’t it funny that journalists within Westminster often used to
refer to Blair’s “unusual private life” yet nothing about this ever
made the newspapers they worked for.
And yes, it IS related, because the UK media are clearly covering up
something else here by refusing to be honest and open in their reporting
of THIS case.
I agree with you there. But I thought it was known the media has been less than honest over this case because it has been a source of really big money for some. The longer the case went on, the more bizarre the reporting, the more money to be made. It has never sunk so low.
February 16th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
As regards TB’s petition, I think 12 years old is daft. At night, OK. And I would say even up to 16 at night, alone in the house or the appartment.
But in daytime! Children start walking to school without the parents when they are about 8, 9 or 10. There are usual several of them together, and if they are taught properly, they will not speak to any stranger. I have wonderful memories of walking to school with other children who lived in the same street.
I also think you should be able to leave a child aged 10 at home on his own for a quarter of an hour, and run to the corner shop, or to the letterbox, without breaking the law.
I don’t think the law should go from one extreme to another.

Would it not have been much more convenient for the MCs if Payne did properly check on Kate and discover Maddie missing say, when K was bathing the twins?
