Madeleine McCann: Melissa Fiering Sees, An Algerian And Waldo
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
THE SUN (front page): “MADDIE SEEN IN FRANCE”
“Eye-defect girl in cafe” – Why do they stare, daddy?
DAILY MIRROR: “I SPOTTED MADDY AT CAFE IN FRANCE”
A picture of Melissa.
“’This is so significant because the girl noticed the blemish in the eye and it’s on CCTV for first time’ - McCANN FAMILY SPOKESMAN CLARENCE MITCHELL LAST NIGHT”
This is the Mirror’s “EXCLUSIVE THE HUNT FOR MADELEINE”
To France:
“The little girl was spotted in a motorway service station cafe by student Melissa Fiering, 18, who insists she clearly saw the distinctive flaw in her right iris”
Says Melissa: “My friend and I had music playing loudly out of our mobile phones and this little girl was dancing to it. It was only when I looked closely at her I realised it was Madeleine. She had a very thin face and her blonde hair had been cut much shorter, down to her jaw. But it was her”
Why so certain?
“I looked in her eye because I’d seen on TV that Madeleine’s got a defect in her right iris and I saw this girl had it. I could hardly believe my eyes but I knew for sure it was Madeleine. I called out her name and she looked up at me - she obviously recognised it”
Obviously. Dancing with a small child and then you shout out a name and she looks at you…
“But when I called out ‘Madeleine’ the man she was with got worried and started dragging her away from the queue”
The man with Madeleine is described as a “dark-skinned man, who was possibly Algerian”. Blonde girl with dark-skinned man. Like her?
What did Melissa do when he was spotted, this swarthy man?
“As he dragged the girl away he threw a white coat over her and pulled a woollen hat from his pocket and jammed it on her head. Melissa adds: ‘He didn’t say a word but as they got to the door he prodded the girl in the back. I tried to take pictures on my phone but I only got one and it was all blurred. I ran outside after them but they’d vanished”
Vanished?
“WE HAVE THE GUN THAT KILLED RHYS”
Rhys Jones was killed in Liverpool, shot by a youth on a bike
“Rhys’s mum Melanie, 42, and dad Stephen, 45, who have received a message of sympathy from Madeleine McCann’s family, issued a statement for tomorrow’s six-month anniversary of the shooting”
Why do we know this?
The message says: “We are still struggling to come to terms with the loss of our beautiful son Rhys. The pain we have had to face every day has been magnified by the poignancy of occasions like Christmas and Rhys’s 12th birthday. The last six months have been a living nightmare. All we want is justice for our son”
Rhys Jones is murdered in Liverpool. Rhys Jones was 11 years old. His parents are not suspects
DAILY EXPRESS: “MADELEINE IN NEW ‘SIGHTING’ AT RESTAURANT”
Dutch woman. A restaurant? Not a therapist. A student
The Dutch student is “100 per cent certain” she saw Madeleine McCann in a roadside restaurant in southern France
Says Melissa: “I called out ‘Madeleine’ and she looked up. The man with her was about six feet tall, with black hair, a black leather jacket and several days growth of stubble. He put on her coat and hat and bundled her away”
She adds: “I can’t stop thinking about it. I wish I had stopped that man. I wanted to pick her up, I am sorry I didn’t do that”
LIVERPOOL DAILY POST: “Madeleine McCann ’spotted’ in Southern France”
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: “Student claims to have sighted Madeleine McCann in France”
A reader comments: “Is this kid going to replace Waldo?”
ASSOCIATED PRESS: “French police investigating an alleged sighting of Madeleine McCann in southern France have determined it was not the missing British girl.
A police official says a Dutch tourist reported that she may have seen McCann at a roadside restaurant. Examining closed-circuit video footage, the investigators spotted a man and a young girl who resembled McCann, but determined it was not her.

Totje, I sincerely hope that I am wrong in my instincts as to why little Shannon is no longer at home. Only time will tell, unfortunately, things like this are a fact of life nowadays and when the signs are there, they may as well be lit up in neon lights!

Thank you for your reply. I had already come to the conclusion to leave well enough alone as far as the subject-that-must-not-be-named-anymore (per agw earlier). I’ve spoken my peace and am content with that. My desire is not to cause trouble but to inform. Others can take the message forward to he-who-shall-not-be-named, either, but, for me, this issue is dead.
As usual, your post was very thoughtful and welcome.

You are so right!.
I couldnt possibly go along with TB campaign purely because his posts were so off the mark.
I believe, if anything, he’s managed an ‘injustice’, not only to Madeliene and other children who may fall foul to child neglect but to all those who believed in him.
And the reason I say that is because of the way he has gone about it all.
Unfortunately, voicing his opinions of the McCanns, that, combined with his campaigns dreadful timing, has done nothing more than bury any good intentions he had.

If just charges were brought against the McCanns, i think a lot of people would feel happier. It is the awful way they are getting away, no getting praised for what they have done (see link on previous post about police commendations) that gets everyone mad

Julie,
I had a look at the video of the mother of that missing 8yr old girl.
Her eyes could be coloured because of crying or lack of sleep. But the story sounds suspicious I agree. Let’s hope the girl will be found soon, safe and sound and can tell her story to someone, who not only listens, but also reacts.
I told a while ago about these friends of mine who lost their daughter this summer. In fact the natural father and mother are divorced. The girl lived at her mothers place. Both parents are into a new relationship. The girl [14] jumped of a building. A girlfriend of her, doesn’t want to talk to anybody about it [yet], but she knows more about the motives. When the parents of this girlfriend can’t find the girl, they go over to the cemetary, and there she is.
Makes me wonder….

Just sounds like another creationist to me.
But obviously welcome to share his opinions.
And despite how they are wrapped up - that is all any of us have at the moment.
Well all except those who actually removed poor Madeleine.
And as we know they are not telling.

I am only reading your post now as I have been away all day. You ask me a difficult question.
My own tendency would be to speak my mind on the site I post on (Anorak), and not to do it on sites which I never go to, hoping that the people from other sites who read Anorak, will realise how important it is not to pass erroneous information, not only for the sake of accuracy, but also for their own credibility. It is up to them to check if the information they are passing is right.
I never read Tony Bennet’s reasons thoroughly, I must say, and never really bothered with them, because they seemed artificial to me, considering how very little we know about the case. Prosecution can only occur once the inquiry is over. Besides, I don’t have the soul of a prosecutor.
How can I put it in a way that is not shocking ? The MCs were careless, that is certain. I think they lacked both prudence and kindness to leave their children alone at night. Maybe (we shall see), they covered up their little one’s death. Yet, while I think it is essential that the full truth is known, if they didn’t harm her on purpose, I don’t like to see them humiliated, I don’t want to be the cause of their suffering, I don’t feel like being sarcastic against them. I don’t know why, but I have the feeling that the child, wherever she may be, has forgiven them long ago. Don’t misunderstand me, I don’t idealise them ; they aren’t the sort of persons I’d make friends with.
Of course, if they harmed their child on purpose - which I don’t think - I’ll revise my stance. But until then, my aim is to know what happened, and to make sure that the Portuguese can go on with their inquiry. Then it will be up to the justice to judge. The list of their lies isn’t convincing, it is not useful, I leave it to the PJ to find them.
Jolie, I hope I answered your question. I like your honesty, and the fact that you put it before any other consideration. You have a nice, quiet way of saying what you think, without being hurtful.

Maria,
Thank you for your post. I will not go into a detailed response on either subject you brought up. The first I’ve chosen not to discuss anymore on this forum to avoid conflict (but I’m glad that you appreciated the information) and the second I can’t post about without the wrath of the administrators coming down on me, as they believe the subject has been beat to death (see agw’s post to me earlier this afternoon.)
I wanted you to know that I read and carefully considered what you wrote, though.

If and when there are charges pressed in the McCann case, will discussion online about it have to cease and desist? (Being that I’m from the US, I am unfamiliar with UK law, but I think some on this forum have posted something along this line.)
Mods and Admin
There is a state of ’sub judice’ where all reporting and discussion will stop, and only emerging hard facts are reported. But we have no idea if and whenthat might happen whether its UK or Portugal???
