Madeleine McCann In A Taxi ‘With Murat’, Denied And Shannon Matthews
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN: “Maddie & Murat ‘in a cab’”
Portuguese taxi driver claims Madeleine McCann was in his cab the night she vanished — with Robert Murat. “Antonio Cardoso, 67, insisted he took the little girl and four adults on a short journey to a hotel where they all switched to a Jeep with foreign plates.”
Says he:
“I later recognised him on television. I am sure it was him…She was awake but silent. She was just staring ahead with big owlish eyes. I noticed her eye because my son was born with a defect much the same. I saw her kind of twist her chin a few times in my rear-view mirror. I remember she was in pink pyjamas and wondered why they hadn’t dressed her.”
Says McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell: “We are dismissing this primarily because the timings are entirely wrong.”
IRISH EXAMINER: “Taxi driver claims he picked up Madeleine”
Antonio Castela, 67, said he dropped off the missing girl and her English-speaking mystery companions at an Algarve hotel and watched them drive off in a blue jeep. He insisted he was “100% sure” his passengers included Madeleine.
The McCanns and Robert Murat — the third official suspect in the Madeleine McCann case — all deny wrongdoing”
Kate Mccann is a “GP” Kate and husband Gerry a “heart specialist”
TIMES: “Forget Happy Meals, let’s focus on happy families”
Sandra Parsons looks at “The greatest gift of all”:
It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday, and those of us lucky enough to have children can expect to be given cards and flowers. But with Madeleine McCann and the schoolgirl Shannon Matthews still missing, Milly Dowler’s stricken parents making a heartrending appeal for information about their daughter’s murder, and the reminders again of the brutal killing of young women by Steve Wright and Levi Bellfield, I rather think it should be the other way round.
DAILY MIRROR: “Mother vows never to give up in the search for missing Shannon Matthews”
Shannon Matthews’s mum yesterday said she would never stop searching for her daughter. Karen, 32, fighting back tears, said: “We will never give up on her. It is more than a week and we are desperate to have Shannon back. Our message to people is never give up because we won’t”
Adding:
“We’ve shed a lot of tears. “It was really emotional seeing people walking through the streets with us to support our family. I was overwhelmed by the turnout. Now we just want Shannon found. We just pray she will be found safe.
YORKSHIRE POST: “Police quiz 1,500 drivers in hunt for missing Shannon”
A reward. Like Madeleine:
As the investigation enters its second week, Joseph Furniture, based in Bradley, Huddersfield, has put up a £5,000 reward for any information that leads to Shannon’s safe return.
In a statement the firm said: “As a company that was founded in Dewsbury and a former employer of Shannon’s uncle, Neil Hyett, we feel a social and moral responsibility to aid with reuniting Shannon Matthews with her beloved family.”
DAILY STAR: “SHANNON HUNT AT MUM’S ‘DIGS’ - HOME OF FAMILY FRIEND SCOURED”
The house where missing schoolgirl Shannon Matthews’ mum is staying was searched by police yesterday. Officers with sniffer dogs trained to find human remains were sent in to track down clues to the nine-year-old’s disappearance.
The house in Dewsbury, West Yorks, belongs to family friend Peter “Scouser” Brown, 34, who lives just a few doors from Shannon’s mum Karen and her boyfriend Craig Meehan, 22.
Shannons’ parents are not doctors. There is no media feeeding frenzy.

Gandolf (forgive my misspelling - or should I say your misspelling? - in my last post) -
- you’re not the Gandolf I met in 1992 / 93, are you…? Brother of Rimini?
If so, that explains the spelling. Your asshole parents (my employers from 1991 - 93) were not the sharpest knives in the box.

Ciara, its got to the stage where I don’t give a monkeys, we are being shafted from all angles, whatever your opinion is on the case.

Says it all. Well done! imo
When my kids were little I put them outside in their pram in all weather. Left them (in pram) outside a shop, if I could keep an eye on them.
Now….oh no! Not on your life.
Was it you earlier that said what a sad world we live in now?
There is no way I would wish to bring up kids today!
God help the next generation…

No one is allowed to see the evidence in this case, the Portuguese courts at the highest level ruled it a special case, exempt from normal application of law, arguido or not, access denied.

Oh to be a fly on the wall and listen in to the PJ discussions, your”e right we are
all taking info from the Press which is sheer speculation . If the interviews DO
take place , apart from proving the Tapas9 time sequences differed too much from other people”s account, what does it prove?

Not funny. Lots of spin fromTeam McConn, very vocal.Where is Madeleine’s voice, who’s speaking for her?
Everything is about the parents and how their image can be protected.

I think you missed some options
you said..
‘- do they lack evidence to press charges ?
- do they lack evidence to prove their charges without doubt, legally speaking ?’
or
- ‘do they lack evidence?’ Of any kind
If the timing of this legal change means that they could award this ‘arduigo’ status’ without evidence one day, then the next… not, well, there are questions to be answered there. I would be far more interested in why this law was changed, as usually, it is changed because of miscarriages of justice.
The questions issue is bizarre. If they refused the questions in Portugal, then what reason would anyone have to believe that it would be any different if they were presented in the UK, on behalf of the PJ?

No court case after 11 months!
Does it mean we will still be there posting next year, asking ourselves the same questions, and debating about Clarries’s latest spin?
Bon courage to you!

A very complex case, I was just a witness, but grim though it is, nothing as unnerving or distressing as the McCann case. Sorry can’t elaborate.
The lesser one is better though, someone pleaded guilty, but hasn’t been sentenced yet

WTF,
Yes, that’s what Clarrie is telling us….
But how about mr Murat?
And someone else posted a good question:
does anybody know if when somebody isn’t an arguido any more, if s/he’s [or the lawyer] allowed to see the evidence they’ve got in the case?

val,
Sometimes even I get confused
I’ve read that mr Murat asked to be named arguido.
I’ve read also that he was made arguido.
I’ve read that the McCanns were made arguido.
Now you say they asked to be named arguido.
If they all asked to be named arguido, why do they all want to get rid of that status now?

I totally agree with you, especially the social differences between shannon and maddie case, it is so apalling! why the different treatment. Prince harry is dominating the news tonight, no mention of poor shannon, the media have already decided they are not photogenic enough

Jamie bulger was a different case altogether imo, his mum went into a butchers shop and turned her back for a few minutes,he then went outside the shop and got confused as to his where abouts,in a shopping mall, then the two boys who knew him and he knew them took him on the promise they would take him to his mum but instead they took him and tortured him,the child was with someone he thaught he could trust,I dont understand why people quote the bulger case that was not child neglect,it was a busy mum calling into a shop, and by the way did you see what those two little bastards did to him its on the web his parents wanted the truth to be out,as the police and social services did not want you or I to know that two ten year olds could be capable of such a crime like this, if thats the case we shouldnt let our kids go to school or to a shop or leave for two minutes in the garden etc, it was a shopping mall where the mother thaught he couldnt come into harm. she did not leave him to go out for several hours….and the murderers are now both free thats the good old british law for you. so if you take your kids to a creche/nursery and then go to work leaving your kids with a teacher/nurse and she turns her back for one minute and someone takes the child is she guilty of child neglect? well yes but accidental at most if she leaves the kids to go for a cup of tea in the staffroom and is gone for twenty minutes then she is total guilty of child neglect, when rhys jones got shot should he have not been on the street at the time of shooting were his parents neglectors, where do you draw the line, the bulger case to me was very sad my boy was the same age as jamie, and it made it all the more tragic for me……to fasten your child to a lamp post and leave them for some sicko to hurt or kidnap is child neglect,to leave your children in an unlocked apartment while you go on the razz is also child neglect but take your child shopping in a mall and the child runs outside whilst you are being served is a bit different………..just a busy mum shopping for tea with her toddler..sad. we all know now that we take extra care of our kids due to stories like this one, hell my mum used to leave me outside in the garden in my pram in the sixties to sleep in the fresh air as did lots of mothers they never dreamt anyone would take you,but sadly times move on and we now live in a most cruel world,so we take more precautions.after the jamie bulger case reigns on infants became popular but i dont recall them being popular before that……I can go for mother being a bit careless, but not child neglect come on, she didnt leave him outside for ages on his own a couple of minutes is all it took. the mccans deliberately left their children in an unlocked apartment and went out for the night not once but on several occasions and the bit I cant understand is this was well after the bulger case dont you think they would have learned something?

I agree they are two completely different scenarios. BUT the main difference is that no one knows what happened to Madeleine, and could the same thing have happened to her siblings? You are talking about a distracted mother, not an absent one or worse still one who was there?????
February 28th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
If my memory serves me correct, they werent allowed to re interview the mccs in september cos the prosecutor in portugal desided there wasnt enough eveidence to re interview, then came the visit to meet with the fss, letters sent etc and second lot of interviews allowed by the prosecutor. Im hoping they have enough evidence, hence the request for interviews
