THE SUN: “McCann pals to face cop quiz”

Portuguese “cops are to jet to Britain to interview Kate and Gerry McCann and their pals in a last-ditch bid to solve Maddie’s disappearance. They want to quiz David Payne, Jane Tanner and partner Russell O’Brien, it was claimed.”

The Sun’s source is newspaper 24 horas. It reports: “We are finalising the last few details. Within ten days’ a team of investigators will travel to the UK.”

DAILY TELEGRAPH: “Last night on television: The Girls Who Were Found Alive (C4) – Empty (BBC2)”

It was impossible not to think of other “disappearance” cases while watching The Girls Who Were Found Alive (C4). This fine Cutting Edge documentary told the story of two youngsters whose abduction, a decade ago, by a predatory paedophile ended against the odds in rescue. It could serve as a beacon of hope for any parent facing their worst nightmare. But in the context of the search for nine-year-old Shannon Matthews, who went missing last week in Dewsbury, and the ongoing tragedy of Madeleine McCann, it had extra poignancy.

SHANNON MATTHEWS: “LEONA IN PLEA TO ‘NUMBER 1 FAN’ SHANNON”

Pop babe Leona Lewis made an emotional plea last night for help to find missing Shannon Matthews.

She begged nine-year-old Shannon – her No1 fan – to “come home’’.

And she appealed for anyone with information to tell police immediately.

Leona, 22, made the plea after Shannon’s family revealed her favourite song is the X Factor winner’s No 1 hit Bleeding Love.

Here come the celebs…

Leona says: “I urge anyone to come forward if they know anything about this. If Shannon is reading this then I urge her to get in touch with her parents and come home.’’

DONCASTER TODAY: “Locally trained dog leads search for Jersey bodies

Eddie came to national attention last year when he and former kennel-mate Keela were drafted to Portugal to help with the search for missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann.

Keela, a “blood dog” is believed to have detected tiny specks of blood found in the McCann’s Algarve apartment, while Eddie is said to have picked up traces of the missing girl in the back of Kate and Gerry McCann’s hire car.

GUERNSEY PRESS & STAR: “More bodies fear from secret room”

A SECOND bricked-up room has been found at former Jersey children’s home Haut de la Garenne. Forensic scientists are expected to enter it today.

Deputy police chief Lenny Harper estimated that it was about 12ft by 12ft – a similar size to another which was entered yesterday. Police fear that more human remains will be found in the secret below-ground rooms.

Mr Harper said that Eddie, the specialist sniffer dog also used in the case of Madeleine McCann, had shown an ‘extremely strong reaction’ when sent into a bricked-up room in the building’s cellar. His response was akin to that shown before a child’s skull was found on Saturday.

DOG MAGAZINE: “Find Dead People – A Day in the Life of a Human Remains (Cadaver) Detection Dog”

As many will have heard in the news recently, the police are deploying the skills of specially trained dogs in the hunt for human remains at a former children’s home on the island of Jersey. Dogs have also been used in the recent high profile searches for missing girl Madeleine McCann and West Yorkshire schoolgirl Shannon Matthews. If you’ve ever wondered how these specialist sniffer dogs are trained or how they go about their work, K9 Magazine spoke with PC David King about what goes into training and working a cadaver dog.
