A reported sighting of Madeleine McCann in southern France has been officially ruled out. Gerry McCann revealed that French police have established that the young girl seen by a Dutch tourist in Montpellier last month was not his missing daughter.He said it was “disappointing” that it took so long for this to happen after “widespread” media reporting of the sighting.
In his latest blog, Mr McCann writes: “We did hear that the French have officially ruled out the reported sighting of Madeleine in Montpellier.”

Brilliant! You’re absolutely right. “L’amour ne suffit pas” (although it does go a long way, n’est-ce pas?!)
And what about all those children who do NOT disappear, despite being “neglected” or “disadvantaged” either slightly or a great deal, and however we judge the degree of parental culpability in any particular case?
I think we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that there ARE predators who prey on children. In either one or both of these cases, it is possible (by no means certain) that a predator may have been involved. We don’t know yet. Let’s not forget that, in concentrating on the mothers’ roles, we might just lose sight of someone else’s criminal or sick activity. And IF that is the case, with either girl, two predators may still be “out there”.
Please note that I said “may”.

The won’t, can’t and don’t know better. Child neglect does not differentiate between ‘class’ nor privilege.
We need clear laws in this country to prevent neglect irrespective of consequence.

I agree with you. I say, love is not enough; there needs to be a duty of care which Karen Matthews could not have given Shannon with the number of men she has had in and out of Shannon’s lives.
Five fathers, plus a 22 year old ‘dad’ who has ‘tickle fights’ with her is not creating a loving home for your daughter. Maybe she says she ‘loved’ her daughter but she did not create a loving home for her daughter.

Good point. Of course I agree that you can make judgements about their actions or even their motivation, and everyone does have the right to do that since they have asked for our help, but I still believe that you cannot tell for sure if they love their children or not. For example, it would appear, as you say, that Karen could not make a commitment to anyone, but that does not mean she doesn’t have feelings of love for her children. Kate made a bad decision about leaving her children out of earshot (assuming that she isn’t guilty of worse…..we don’t know yet) but that does not prove she does not have loving feelings for her children.
I personally think it’s dangerous to make that sort of judgement. People make bad errors, some more than others.
Both of them seem to me to be desperate to have their daughters back home.
Only my opinion! Only debating the issue.
Whatever the truth about their mothers’ feelings, like you, I feel desperately sorry for those two girls. Doesn’t bear thinking about.
