Madeleine McCann: Our Survey Says
MADELEINE McCann is missing. Are Kate and Gerry McCann innocent. They say they are. Or are they guilty. Nothing proven, but people will talk.
Press your keypads now…
PRESS Association: Madeleine McCann’s parents were said to be “encouraged” after a survey suggested public opinion in Portugal was shifting in their favour.
The Correio da Manha poll found that 38.6% of those questioned still believe Kate and Gerry McCann were involved in their daughter’s disappearance in the Algarve.
On the other hand, 30.7% thought the couple, from Rothley, in Leicestershire, were completely innocent.
This compares to an earlier poll run by the Portuguese newspaper in which 39.9% of people interviewed thought the couple were guilty and 26.8% believed they were not to blame.
It is a small change but the McCanns, still official suspects in the police investigation, believe the tide could be turning for them after 10 months of speculation and accusations.
Their spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said: “It’s encouraging to see that public opinion is shifting in Kate and Gerry’s favour.
“People are right to believe that Kate and Gerry had nothing to do with their daughter’s disappearance and are right to be sceptical of some of the coverage in recent months.”

Given that this is a MEDIA forum discussing articles in relation to the behaviour of the media and primarily a section of the NEWSPAPERS - the question was not if they acted in a manner that causes concern. I think that is a given. It has also been handled at length by the media as a concern. As for the professional element, I understand that the illustrious professionals of the social services are involved with the family. The alleged silence from the “professionals” is perhaps because it is not the time or place to vilify and condemn the parents further than they have been already. That would strike me as being professionally competent.
Neither is this a class issue. Nor is it about other missing children. The articles are about the excesses of the press in relation to a specific case. I notice again that it is screaming front page news - or maybe not news - just more loose allegations that are neither helpful to the ongoing inquiry or indeed to highlighting any other serious issue.
And therein lies the problem…
If a newspaper is about reporting NEWS rather than gossip or innuendo it has more value. If it endlessly recycles rubbish and nonsense and changes the story from day to day it lacks not only authority but also any helpful insight into either a specific or general problem. Like the boy who cried wolf, the public pay a diminished amount of attention, the story becomes further and further away, receding from sight. The paper just fulfills the equivalent of net curtain twitching, rubber necking at a car crash scene, titillating and arousing but offering nothing of value.
Don’t expect anything serious or useful from the media any time soon.

To focus on the role of Anorak ( which is supposed neutral ), the tabloids, the media in general in relation to this case…I think, as I have stated previously on another Anorak thread, that this holds a shameful light up to the practices of certain elements of the media. Let’s focus…I think the issue of the right and wrongs of the actions of the McCanns is a moot one for this forum…this country still (just about) has the right to be innocent until proven guilty and yet we have seen elements of the British media so rabidly out of control it beggars belief.
The fact is the press have shown themselves (and not for the first time) to be beneath contempt in the manner in which they hound people without fact or substantive evidence. The hiding behind vague assertions and reporting all tittle-tattle as front page news worthy of great big screamers is disgraceful. The media and in particular the tabloids want it every which way, yet they have no accountability and the public at the sharp end of their wit and wisdom find any apology that can be drawn out of these people to be buried somewhere in the back pages.
Given the soul searching that TV has had to go through and should continue to go through, it is time for a similar mea culpa for the papers. There should be a zero tolerance for made up stories. A zero tolerance for poor research and wilful misinterpretation and deceitful inaccuracies. I find myself feeling saddened to agree with z-list celebrities that maybe there is a need for much greater control on the press. They can’t do it themselves. The PCC can’t seem to do it.
So maybe it is high time to consider some punitive measures for the press who want to act as judge and jury and if it meant a financial burden so great on the likes of the Express and the Star that they are forced to close would it be a great loss to the freedom of speech/press/ whatever in this country. I see no loss in losing the elements of media that can not and will not work to a basic set of principles.
Administrator: All very valid points and worthy of discussion. The point being, you are free to voice these issues and talk them through so as long as the points you are making are not obscene or breaking the laws of the land (in Anorak’s case the UK). I have said this before and I should like you to consider it very carefully before you rush to hand a blue pencil to another Lord Chamberlain’s team of censors: Where secrecy is allowed to thrive, tyranny flourishes.
Have you ever lived and worked as a communicator in a tyrannical country? I have. The results were painful and bloody, so you would have to kill me since would never agree with the basic tenant of your argument. Editors are accountable; laws exist to protect those who may may at risk of exploitation, ridicule or put in harm’s way by the media.
The first to spring to an innocent’s defence is who?
Not the law?
Then who?

Thank you very much indeed for the information and advice. I did wonder about things, i.e. the Daily Mirror for one being shut down. It amazes me in this day and age of free speech, (but not defamation) how much power, apparently, the Mcs have and others. Hope it isn’t another false call re the PJ coming.

sorry, I was messing around deleting e-mails and only just looked here, you may have
got fed up waiting for a reply.
Mods and admin have said they will have to be careful about what is posted. Apparently the Daily Mirror forum was shut down recently because of the “attacks”
against the McCanns and anything quoted now must have a source. Also, it is wise to
state IMO or apparently when you are posting.
It”s taking a long time for the PJ to come here, hope it”s not another false call.

No, not that I can remember as I scanned through. Do you think someone is looking into the site as I had a mention against my post that my comment is awaiting moderation. Never had that before. Are things getting tetchy for the McCanns and have they the power to have posters either moderated or their posts deleted. In view of the coming interviews, they may be a bit edgy.

Very strange I posted to lilith before you asking for a simple explanation of her 170 post and it”s gone!!!!!!!!!
Did you see it? something about the McCanns hiring a U.K. fraud investigation
company.

I’m fine thanks. Come and go on this site as you can see.
Like you, once I wake up, am up. Often get some Aktavite and put on TV, or go on site.
This poor Maddie situation gets on my mind sometimes and like everyone else do hope that we find out more. Depends on how clever the interrogations are put together. The PJ are dealing with, lets say intelligent folks, or just plain crafty folks.

“COLD CASE DETECTIVES” OR “COMMERCIAL & BANK INVESTIGATORS
To date, there has been little focus on the firm of private detectives the McCanns hired in the UK and precisely when. Their firm name on their webpage describe them as Hogan International - Commerical and Bank Investigators. See also details of services they offer below. Why then, in the Daily Mail article are they described as “cold case investigators”? Just like the Retardos, they actually specialise in monetary fraud. It is clear they are the ones responsible for the desperate search for non-prosecution “witnesses” in the UK seeking to exculpate the McCanns by producing a series of so called “creepy characters” who at some stage had been in the vicinity of the McCann apartment. This includes a charity collector and apparently Michaela Walzchuch when canvassing for Jehovah’s witnesses. Then we had the highly credible Granny Cooper and the big splash in the News of the World with her startling “evidence”.
This firm are obviously not fearful of seeking to protect their reputation. This does not stop me from reasonably asking questions about them and querying who is actually funding them. Why has the Find Maddie Fund failed to mention this?

Jolie,
Thanks for replying, esp. because you’re typing with one hand it takes some will-power! Also many thanks for the articles you posted yesterday. I haven’t read them all [yet] but I saved the links, so I can read them this weekend.
Maybe we should ask one of the Portuguese posters if they know about that writer and how it’s possible that people can publish a book [eg] about an ongoing investigation. It intrigues me and also makes me wonder if in case of a jury trial this could influence the jurors.
Bye for now, I’m off to get some sleep, have to get up early tomorrow for work.
