Madeleine McCann: Robert Murat’s Relief
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR: “Murat: It’s big relief”
Madeleine McCann suspect Robert Murat, 34, last night spoke of his joy that he looks likely to be officially cleared in days.
After having his computers returned, he said at his Praia da Luz home last night: “I’m so relieved.”
No mention of the Mirror’s super sleuth Lori Campbell who fingered “weird” Murat.
DAILY MAIL: “Murat could soon be cleared as Madeleine suspect after police return his possessions”
Even his computer - with the Sun’s “kid porn”.
His lawyer Francisco Pagarete said: “The police received an order from the public prosecutor to give everything back to Robert. All his items have been returned. We believe it is another step towards his clearance as a suspect. It’s a good sign.
“But we will have to wait and see. There is nothing official saying his status as an arguido is being revoked.”
Even if yesterday the Sunday People had “CLEARED” him.
No word from the The Mail’s Neil Sears, who told us: “There was something more to the friendly expat who called himself ‘Rob’ than met the eye.” Murat made Sears “feel slightly uncomfortable”.
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “Robert Murat close to being cleared over Madeleine McCann disappearance”
Robert Murat has moved a step closer to being cleared as a suspect in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance after police returned possessions seized from him 10 months ago.
Says hi mother, Jenny Murat, 74: “Every single item that the police took has been returned to us. Of course we hope it means Robert’s arguido status will be lifted shortly. But we’ve had no official confirmation that that is the case and we’re not getting too excited.”

I worked in Manhattan and lived in LIC for 14 months. I don’t remember that. Maybe you’re in the Bible Belt…?

Of course there must have been a basis for the stories. A story can base on invention, on misunderstanding or exaggeration, on educated or uneducated guess, or on the knowledge of the very truth. There was no basis for the Express to assume they were true, says the Express.

Custody dads at play. I always wondered what custody dads did over holiday weekends when it wasn’t their ‘turn’ to entertain the kids.

The scent of death would be one.
(And don’t say I negated that, ‘cos I was just being devil’s advocate’.)
The complete inconsistency of each person’s story (or what we think we know of them), and the fact that the timelines don’t fit, and how things such as GM’s blog have been changed over a course of time. Some definite lies.
Demeanour, analysis of what has been said by, and what has been seen of, the McCs during interviews.
The boot of the car.
The refusal to co-operate, even to answer questions.
The incomprehensible public adherence to the view that the child is still alive.
Etc.

Don’t complain about that - over here in the US, you can’t buy booze on a Sunday unless you’re in a bar.

What is the difference with this story by the Daily Mail and any story by the Express?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=484850&in_page_id=1811
“Madeleine McCann died in a fall down a flight of stairs at her parents’ holiday apartment, Portuguese police claimed yesterday in the latest leak from inside the investigation.”

And, if I disappear in about 15 - 30 minures, I’m not ducking any Qs, Stevo, Matt, or anyone else. I have to get to Tesco before they shut at the abominable time of 6pm.
(If the bookies are open Sunday, why can’t the supermarkets?! I have no religious objection to bookies opening on Easter Sunday - as my local one was when I passed by to get the papers - I just don’t understand why we need to place a bet and we don’t need any of the many things supermarkets could flog on a Holy Day.)

In my view, there are number of things that seem viable and which provide me with a basis for thinking they had something to do with the disappearance.
But, the basis we’re discussing is Express Newspapers’ ‘basis’, not mine and not the PJ’s.
And to put it simply, I think the Express group can depend, at the time of the settlement, only on what is in the public domain, and that that is insufficient basis, and therefore, (for now), they acknowledge that the stories are ‘false’.
March 24th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
480, You must know more than the PJ then, this is a missing person enquiry, nothing more nothing less, until the PJ say otherwise officially and they haven’t.

The Express agrees that there was no basis for Express Newspapers. This means that the Express admits they had no basis. You may have a basis or evidence or whatsoever, but the Express says he hasn’t. They should know best if they have evidence or not.

Ok…turn it on its head then. What is a reasonable basis for thinking the McCanns and/or the T7 had anything to do with the disappearance of Madeleine? Out of all the stories, what do you think is viable?
March 24th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Gandolf, I choose to believe otherwise.
And that is my raison d’etre here on Anorak.
I plan to stay until the truth is known.
Therefore, I will continue to ignore your blatant statements.

It may be…..personally I don’t believe the Taxi story..in relation as to whom
may have been the passengers….but it is not classed as reliable “Evidence”…
not until it is produced in Court and Proven.

Yes. I think as I said to just_me that it’s a case of bad timing. They probably have a deal with Murat to publicise his story. Giving Murat a couple of million to serialise his story and sell a book will reap more rewards for the Express group.

- No!
If the ’scent of death’ isn’t enough of a basis (for Express Newspapers), then ‘a woman looking like Kate’ certainly isn’t. And, even more so, given the date and time, as Clarrie pointed out.

Express Newspapers has to accept it (for now…).

470 Matt.
Perhaps so. But the Express capitulation is intriguing in itself. Of course there’s a basis for thinking the McCanns had something to do with this. As recently as a few weeks ago a taxi driver said he drove Madeleine and a woman looking like Kate on the night of May 3. Isn’t that a basis?

Kate has an expalantion for the scent of death.
The PJ might have other evidence but, until that is known, Express Newspapers has to accept her explanation.

Absolutely not!!! Your original posting was an alarming article about an MP talking about limiting the number of children by sterilisation. This has got nothing to do with absent fathers. The two topics are not related.
If you have the money to afford 10 children then there’s no problem. If you are hard up and have one child then an absent father is an issue. I just responded to your original post about sterilising mothers. I agree with you that absent fathers are an issue but that’s a totally different topic.

I’m amazed:
“‘ In particular, there is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that Mr and Mrs McCann were responsible for the death of their daughter or that they were involved in any sort of cover-up, and there was no basis for Express Newspapers to allege otherwise.”
How could it be seen as “baseless”? The reasons are obvious - sniffer dogs smelled the scent of death on Kate and on other items/paraphernalia to do with the McCanns. This smell of death was refuted by Kate. This is the “basis” for the idea that the parents had some involvement in the disappearance.
Why was this summed up so simplistically and incorrectly?

466…Stevo
The PJ may have that proof….The Express didn’t have it…but printed
such as being “evidence”…which they could not support.
