Madeleine McCann: Robert Murat’s Relief
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR: “Murat: It’s big relief”
Madeleine McCann suspect Robert Murat, 34, last night spoke of his joy that he looks likely to be officially cleared in days.
After having his computers returned, he said at his Praia da Luz home last night: “I’m so relieved.”
No mention of the Mirror’s super sleuth Lori Campbell who fingered “weird” Murat.
DAILY MAIL: “Murat could soon be cleared as Madeleine suspect after police return his possessions”
Even his computer - with the Sun’s “kid porn”.
His lawyer Francisco Pagarete said: “The police received an order from the public prosecutor to give everything back to Robert. All his items have been returned. We believe it is another step towards his clearance as a suspect. It’s a good sign.
“But we will have to wait and see. There is nothing official saying his status as an arguido is being revoked.”
Even if yesterday the Sunday People had “CLEARED” him.
No word from the The Mail’s Neil Sears, who told us: “There was something more to the friendly expat who called himself ‘Rob’ than met the eye.” Murat made Sears “feel slightly uncomfortable”.
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “Robert Murat close to being cleared over Madeleine McCann disappearance”
Robert Murat has moved a step closer to being cleared as a suspect in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance after police returned possessions seized from him 10 months ago.
Says hi mother, Jenny Murat, 74: “Every single item that the police took has been returned to us. Of course we hope it means Robert’s arguido status will be lifted shortly. But we’ve had no official confirmation that that is the case and we’re not getting too excited.”

No way is that Tuck Price. Tuck Price is not a dark guy at all. He looks a lot different to the bald playground man. There has been so much rubbish talked about who that guy could be. I think it was Brian’s Dreams who proposed it being some convicted felon in San Diego. The bald guy appears in other photos and videos with or near the T9 and Murat. He’s either a fellow holidaymaker or else a local known to the PJ.

Hello there,
Are you from Portugal? If so, perhaps you can clarify something for me. I mentioned
yesterday that I had read that there was a six-month time delay for the McCanns to
be sued for negligence , but Matt disagreed. Today, while browsing aSky Forum, someone asked the same question which was answered by a Portugese poster. He/She
confirmed the 6 months so apparently the McCanns could not now be sued, is that
right? If that is the case, unless the PJ have indisputable evidence to charge the
McCanns with “accidental killing”, why would they re-interview the Tapas7?

According to the site Polícia Judiciária.pt, pessoas desaparecidas, the GNR (Guarda Nacional Republicana) got the first call at 10.40 pm.
Later I read somewhere that it took them 10 minutes to arrive at the resort. If I remember it well, they came from Lagos.

People have weird views about arguidos and suspects. In a murder case, or suspected murder case, the police will go wherever they have to and talk to whoever they need to. My guess is that the PJ have had to jump through hoops to make sure charges can stick after interviews. After all, talking to someone is nothing. Lots of people help police with their enquiries every day of the week.
March 24th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Someone is saying on 3A’s that “playground man” is Tuck Price, anyone know anything about this?

It could be that the McCanns themselves (through their lawyer) asked to be declared arguidos.
An arguido has more rights than a witness, they have also the right not to reply questions, which the McCanns did.
A witness is obliged to answer all questions, the arguido can choose to silence.
Probably the PJ was already ready with them as witnesses.
I regret this, and I suspect this could be what Alípio Ribeiro wanted to say on his unhappy interview. As witness, the couple would be still obliged to reply.

Exactly
However I dont agree with your last comment! Trust the PJ? Yeah trust the PJ!

Mrs Fenn is quite elusive. There’s a couple of stories attributed to what she said but in documentaries she’s quite ticked off and says nothing. Again, how can we know for sure about her testimony?
The secretive people in this are the ones we know absolutely ziltch about:
Ms Najova, the bald guy in the playground, O’Brien, the Oldfields, Woolfall to name a few as well as Mrs Fenn.

The PJ made a very good move in only naming 3 people arguidos and let the others be “only” witnesses
The PJ already has suspicions over the mccanns and Murat so far, even if theyve returned his thinggies:rhey kept the most relevant and you will notice Murat didnt comment on this which is the most important news,in fact.
The T7 - and may be only 3or 4 of them- are going to be reinterviewed and they are bond to answer by law without lying for which they can be charged
Once they have re declared they might well be named arguidos ….to shut them up or they simply will not be declared arguidos.
Time will tell and time is ticking

Hi. I already posted links to Portuguese articles saying that Lieutenant Costa Cabral received a call at 23:50pm. I haven’t seen any links to suggest the police arrived at 10:40pm. I’ve been trying to nail those times. The Foreign Office letter says they were called at 23:58pm in Portimao. As you can see - Clarence earned over 6000 quid in expenses helping the McCanns.

Hi, how are you? spending more time here I notice. Regarding the timelines, I
remember reading Mrs. Fenn saying she had just watched the BBC2 News (which finishes at 10.25pm) when she heard Kate screaming. Going out on to her balcony, Mrs. Fenn said she offered Kate the use of her phone to phone the Police but was told the Police had already been informed. Apparently, the Police arrived at 10.47pm and
a Policeman supposedly remarked to Mrs Fenn that there was no evidence of a break-in, in his opinion.

According to the stories, the McCanns were made arguido by the police and not the other way around. Like you, I trust the PJ will triumph in the end.
“Finally, the PJ called. They told the McCanns they would be made official suspects – arguidos. The McCanns had noted the change of mood in Portugal, especially among the PJ, and the increasing viciousness of the Portuguese press.”

Thanks, I had read the Kirsty Wark story before but the 12:01am story is an old chestnut that has had ample research and we’ve had feedback from the Foreign Office on as you read here in my last post. To date, there is no good reason for the Telegraph story to appear at that time - and barely before the PJ arrived at PDL.
For me, this will always be a bizarre thing to happen. The timeline that interests me is not the T9 timeline of the farce that was taking place from the Tapas Bar and checking on the kids but the timeline of how the authorities were alerted:
10:00pm Child noticed missing by Kate
10:40pm Official time of disappearance on PJ website
11:50pm GNR called
11:58pm Foreign Office in Portimao called
12:01am Telegraph story appeared
circa 01:00am PJ arrived
None of the above makes sense if things happened according to the McCanns/T9.

Arguido
It is given to a person whom the authorities suspect may have committed an offence. This designation does not exist in certain other jurisdictions. In a criminal investigation a person has to be declared an arguido prior to being arrested.Portuguese law makes a distinction between arguido and suspect.

Tosh. The police in an enquiry can ask anyone what they like. The PJ have already visited the UK and interviewed Murat’s ex wife. She wasn’t an arguido was she?
An arguido is a suspect…period.

I am in Minnesota for the time being, but have lived in a number of states as well as Canada. Laws vary state by state, but some states regulate further down the chain, county by county and city by city. The southern states tend to be more restrictive about Sunday sales. The trend is toward less particularity, but there are still curious mixes to be found.
I agree with you with the age of drinking, but I doubt it will change any time soon. Old enough to die in Iraq but not to legally drink! I was able to legally drink at 18 (although I didn’t!), but the age shifted upwards. Feds threatened to hold federal highway funding for noncompliance, and it worked.

Stevo, I didn,t do a google, searched Telegraph’s data base, any how its probably a pointless item, so for what it’s worth, here is the Glasgow connection i.e. Kirsty Wark.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The McCanns were immediately certain that their daughter had been kidnapped and determined to publicise her disappearance as widely as possible, ensuring that, from the very first moments, the hunt for Madeleine was as much about the media coverage as it was the police investigation. Jill Renwick has known the couple since they all worked together at a Glasgow hospital more than a decade ago. She spoke to Kate at 7am on the morning after Madeleine vanished: “She just said, ‘Help me, please help me’. She said, ‘We’ve been searching all night until 4.30am, and then everybody left us’. At that stage there was only one police officer at the door. They didn’t know what to do. So I phoned GMTV.”
She also phoned the McCanns’ wider circle of friends, who mobilised to phone anyone they could think of to beg for help. Renwick’s sister called someone she knew in CID, someone had a connection with Des Browne, the defence secretary. One friend lives close to the Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark, said Renwick: “She knocked on her door and said, ‘I know you must think I’m mad but my friend’s wee girl is missing, can you do anything to help?’ Though they are not friends, Gordon Brown’s brother John lives in the same street as Renwick: “I stopped him in the street the day afterwards and said, ‘These are my friends. Do you think you could speak to Gordon about it?’ And he said of course. I don’t know if anything came about that way.”

Like I say, you have to wake up early in the morning to catch me out (usually).
Here’s the text from the Foreign Office letter under the Freedom of Information Act about that first news story:
At 23:58 on 3 May 2007 our duty officer in Portimao received a call from a Mark Warner employee reporting that a child had gone missing from the Ocean Bay Club, Praia da Luz. Out duty officer in Lisbon informed the Foreign & Commonwealth Office Response Centre in London at 00:30 on 4 May 2007.
We offer consular assistance, depending on the individual circumstances of each case, to British nationals in distress overseas. In this case, consular officials provided the appropriate assistance when the disappearance was first reported. The details about the disappearance given in the ‘Daily Telegraph’ article, namely that the girl’s parents had gone to have dinner once their children were asleep that night, but returned to check on them only to find that the girl had gone missing’, were given to our Duty Officer in Portimao when the disappearance was reported.
Clarence Mitchell was seconded by the Central Office of Information, where he was the Director of the Media Monitoring Unit, to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, on 21 May 2007.
In accordance with the Civil Service Management code, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office refunded reasonable expenses incurred by Clarence Mitchell in carrying out his duties of providing assistance to the McCann family in exceptional circumstances. The total amount was £6,230.90.
The Central Office of Information made a statement on 17 September 2007 confirming that Clarence Mitchell had resigned as Director of the Media Monitoring Unit at the Central Office of Information. For any further information, you will need to apply to that Department.
No Foreign and Commonwealth Office staff were specifically appointed to assist the McCanns, although a number of our staff were involved in providing consular assistance to the family. We do not maintain financial records of the individual costs of consular cases.
