Madeleine McCann: The McCanns’ Return To Portugal, A Year Of Looking And Ben Affleck
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
THE SUN: “McCanns risk arrest over visit”
KATE and Gerry McCann may risk arrest by returning to Portugal for the one-year anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance.
The couple are prepared to take the chance in a last ditch attempt to revive interest in four-year-old Maddie, missing since May 3.
Any facts?
The doctors, both 39, left the Praia da Luz resort last September – 48 hours after being made official suspects over the mystery.
Gerry and Kate McCann are Doctors. Such are the facts.
Says the McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “They want to be there for the first anniversary. Going out there would send the strongest possible message that Madeleine could still be alive and the search for her should continue.”
SYDNEY MORNING HERALD: “Turning the tabloids”
Ben Affleck is Gone Baby Gone:
Almost as troublesome was the story’s unforeseen and unintended resemblance to a real-life case of child kidnapping that hit the headlines in the months it was being filmed. That was the disappearance in Portugal last year of British girl Madeleine McCann, who was of a similar age and appearance to the film’s kidnapping victim and had a name eerily similar to the character in the Lehane novel, Amanda McCready.
McCready has disappeared amid the squalor of her south Boston neighbourhood. The police are out in formation, as are the television news vans, antennas raised high, all but trembling for blood.

Last week CM wanted the PJ to interview 20 witnesses , including OC staff, presumably
for the McCanns “defense”. Are these the ones you are talking about.? My bet is the PJ
will ignore their request ansd see it as yet another diversion. Again a post saying some
PJ Officers are already here interviewing minor witnesses. When you think about it, three days is not long to do comprehensive interviews. Again, rumour, that two of the
Tapas 7 have jumped ship and one is refusing to arrange a date to be interviewed.

We all know they are being protected by government - its not even a secret is it. But WHY?
Anyway, the majority of right thinking people know the score regardless of the outcome. Gotta say, though, I will not be impressed with the Portuguese government and their judiciary and police if they let these slimy parental failures escape justice.
Its going to look mightily as if Portugal is subservient to the UK.

It’s got nothing to do with “playing their game” or “giving them the finger”.
That’s emotional. They [the pj] also have to obey the law.
Let’s take another example.
You’re accused of abducting [eating] Coco’s kids.
But at that time we [you and I] were talking on Anorak [or having a drink in the pub].
Wouldn’t you insist that the police would go to me to check your alibi?
Would the police be allowed to ignore my statement?
So if the law says they are allowed to propose people to be interrogated/interviewed shouldn’t the police [in case the prosecutor wants to bring charges] interview them?

No problem Totje, but with the spirit of paranoia around here at the moment I just wanted to point it out.

What on earth are yo rambling on about ‘dave’? Do you have to invent stuff to attack people with now? What is it with the pros that they have to try this kind of approach to try to negate people who defend Madeleine and children from errant parents?

I know - you’re right. But when Normandy veterans and concentration camp victims are still alive, it’s not really right to associate with such a symbol is it? Plus, it’s still an illegal symbol in Germany is it not?

You are right Stevo, as is goose stepping also banned.
The point I was trying to make was it is very easy to be judged guilty by association.

You could be right about that. It’s not only in the USA.
And most of them are people who never experienced WW2 or heard of the real terrors told by real people [preferabley they know]. Most oldies died.

Hi there with all the intrigue attached to this case and the high profile support the
McCanns are having, NCMEC and now the European Parliament, I wouldn”t be at all
surprised if the questions have been leaked and the McCanns Lawyers are confident
their Arguido status is lifted. We shall see, but I think they should be charged with
neglect.

Personally I don’t like the secrecy stuff.
Of course they shouldn’t reveal everything yet a little bit of information would be nice.

The PJ arent the McCanns toys. Why would they play their game?
Methinks you read too much into that. Id give the MCCanns the finger too, who the hell do they think they are.

I don’t know if these questions indeed were leaked.
Haven’t seen an official statement about that.
Yet it wouldn’t matter as long as they answer the questions truthfully.
Puzzled that the PJ isn’t going to attend the questioning of the other people [suggested by the McCanns] though. Shouldn’t they attend these meetings too in case they plan to bring charges? Makes me think the arguido status is to be lifted.

Sounds familiar, didn’t they plan to come back to the UK and it coincided with them being knocked off their ‘holy’ perches and their flight (as in ‘they fled’) from Portugal?
They always seem to have had things planned for ages dont they. But of course, Gerry had the anniversary planned about a week after Madeleine ‘vanished’ didn’t he!
Personally I wish the Portuguese would stop mucking around and lift this crazy and pointless ’status’ - let the public see the facts!

But think about it! Once everything the PJ know about the McCanns is in the public domain, it can be reported on. I cant wait to hear about the time they went to Chaplins! I bet the PJ have the credit card slips etc!
Once people realise they went further than ‘nearby’ their credibility (if they have any beyond the dipsticks who love them here) will be completely gone.
Fear not, the law is out of step with morality, but morality and social acceptance drive changes in the law. They will not escape justice ultimately.

They planned that trip as early as mid January.
Hardly likely the prosecutor told them [that far in advance] that he would bring charges.
Don’t know [for sure] if they’re still planning to go though.
And their lawyers [remember the expensive extradition guys] won’t let them go if there’s any chance of an arrest. In that case they would/should/would be advised to stay in the UK, wait for the charges and an EAW. And then it was up to the lawyers….

If you remember, last week it was …..”the McCanns want to go back to Portugal on the anniversary of Madeleine”s disappearance, but their advisors have suggested it would
be inadvisable. Now it is more decisive that they will go, which makes me wonder as I said whether they know something we don”t. A poster on Sky who is Portugese said
the other day that their arguido status would be lifted on 11th or 14th April. If it is true that the British Police, who IMO could only be influenced by Government , have leaked
the questions, it”s disgraceful.
