KATE and Gerry McCann may risk arrest by returning to Portugal for the one-year anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance.
The couple are prepared to take the chance in a last ditch attempt to revive interest in four-year-old Maddie, missing since May 3.

The doctors, both 39, left the Praia da Luz resort last September – 48 hours after being made official suspects over the mystery.

Says the McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “They want to be there for the first anniversary. Going out there would send the strongest possible message that Madeleine could still be alive and the search for her should continue.”

Almost as troublesome was the story’s unforeseen and unintended resemblance to a real-life case of child kidnapping that hit the headlines in the months it was being filmed. That was the disappearance in Portugal last year of British girl Madeleine McCann, who was of a similar age and appearance to the film’s kidnapping victim and had a name eerily similar to the character in the Lehane novel, Amanda McCready.
McCready has disappeared amid the squalor of her south Boston neighbourhood. The police are out in formation, as are the television news vans, antennas raised high, all but trembling for blood.

I did once collect up all my tax receipts after a heated family argument, and prove that I had been single handedly supporting this twerp and, by my estimation, another ‘unknown’ scallywag, somewhere in darkest Liverpool, for my entire working life - one of them I didn’t know, the other I couldn’t stand….didn’t go down too well with Mother in Law!!!!

You can add to your list that if a man is sent to prison he can tell the prison Doctor that he became a criminal because he was ashamed of his sticky out ears, or crooked nose, and us nice tax payers will pay for them to be straightened or stuck back or whatever…….(my ex-brother in law) (which certainly led to hims staying out of prison, crime not necessary now, for us nice tax payers support him full time, and allow him to work 16 hours a week in a pub, because he was so devastated by prison that he became an alcoholic - 46 years old to date, and never done a days work in his entire life)

quite so. My father was a GP, and pointed out that if a man came in to the surgery and announced that he was Jesus of Nazareth or Napoleon, there were nice men in white coats who would come and collect him and help him to overcome the delusion.
But if a man comes in and anounces he is a woman nice surgeons in white coats come in and lop off important bits of his anatomy and make no attempt to tell him he is deluded. And we all pay for this nonsense.

The friends have all volunteered to cooperate. None will be accompanied by lawyers.
Mr Mitchell denied that the trip to Brussels by the McCanns, of Rothley, Leics, was a “diversionary tactic”.

KATE and Gerry McCann will launch a child safety scheme in Brussels next week while Portuguese cops interview their friends in Britain.
The couple will be present when a draft declaration calling for a European-wide missing child alert system goes before the European Parliament.
Portuguese police will spend a week quizzing the Tapas Seven, who dined with the McCanns when Madeleine vanished.

Madeleine McCann�s parents are said to be �receptive� to this next phase, going as far as saying �they wish it had happened some time ago�.
Clarence Mitchell explained that Kate and Gerry are in favour of this new round of questioning, even saying: Kate and Gerry thank police for it�.
As to what might be said during questioning, they added,
�they will simply say what they said in May and June last year - in their original statements�.
