Madeleine McCann: Anjos Calls Mitchell A Liar And Madeleine One Year On: Campaign For Change
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
THE SUN: “Cop: McCanns’ spokesman ‘lies’”
Carlos Anjos, president of Portugal’s Police Federation, says of Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns’ spokesman: “He lies with as many teeth as he has in his mouth.”
The accused the former BBC man of leaking police statements Kate and Gerry made within hours of Maddie disappearing last May. These were aired on Spanish TV last week. Anjos said the aim was to give the McCanns an excuse not to attend a reconstruction.
Says Mr Mitchell: “It is categorically untrue that I leaked them. There was absolutely no benefit for us to do that.”
THE TIMES: Andrew Billen on TV:
“It was going to be called Madeleine McCann, but now ITV1’s exclusive, has a longer name: Madeleine, One Year On: Campaign for Change. The programme will follow her parents as they campaign for an American-style Amber Alert system, in which law enforcement agencies are empowered to commandeer airtime when a child goes missing. Ah, lack of television coverage. That must have been the problem.”
Indeed.

They seem to be irresponsible, childish, careless people, who drank far too much during their holidays, which made them still more irresponsible, careless and childish. What they call “naive”.
It resulted into a “disaster”, for their child, and for many people involved.
I blame them for not wanting the truth to be known (no reconstuction if possible), but when you realise the number of people who want the truth to be known is so low, you have to think they are backed by the majority. It is, to me, the most worrying in the whole case, like a decay in values, and as you say, Salomon, very unfair on the Portuguese.

Jo 530 - I really understand / imagine the frustration of PJs in Portugal after Clarence’s statement. It’s just that any action against Mitchell would distract everyone from the real issue which is to serve justice for Madeleine.
Don’t get me wrong. I also understood (very personally) the frustration and dismay of the many portuguese residents, volunteers from the fire services, the GNR and PSP and even the army that were used in the days after Madeleine disappeared to search for her across the Algarve. Young and old some have used their days off - or worked over time looking for Madeleine.
The rettribution for these efforts was a disgusting campaign orchestrated in the British press against Portugal and the Portuguese. This included xenophobic insinuations, insults and deliberate misrepresentations of Portugal for british consumption. To all this misleading campaign the famously robust Press Complaints Commission turned a blind eye.
It’s for Madeleine and for the Portuguese that I feel sorry for. Unfortunately I don’t think that accusing Mitchell of defamation will compensate.

Yes, I also think Rebelo seems to be very dedicated and honest. If anyone can eventually find the truth, he will. It is a very difficult case after all.
But, I wonder if those words mean something more. Other people also involved that we don’t know about?

She was quite confident at the beginning of that appearance..more so
than her husband seemed to be.
It was only the sceptical questions began that she lost her composure
very noticably and he lost his completely too.

I also doubt the US would like to have people as citizens who have been official suspects in some type of crime.

before you say such funny things, give people a warning. What if someone is muching their sardine at the moment?

You know what, I know the “too fragile” thing is only an excuse, and they don’t want to be part in the re-construction, if they can, but I suspect K MC isn’t as well as she looks at first sight. I got that feeling when I watched Clarrie’s interview about the leak, on Sky News. It was interspersed with some very short footage of the Brussels press conference, with one or two close ups of K M. She looked very nervous, kept moving her head, in what I thought was a jerky way. As I don’t know her normally, I can’t tell, but I think she maybe is in a bad state, nervously speaking.
If she is hiding something, she’d better free herself by telling the truth. What she is keeping inside might eat her up.
April 16th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Sorry pals, the article in not only in Spanish, but in a VERY DIFFICULT Spanish, really hard to translate. It runs down Nacho Abad with all the fine insults a talented writer can find. I wonder if Jo can translate a bit, cause it relly worths.
The article is totally insulting, but without bad words or swearwords, just pure talent and imagination…. Poor Nacho!
April 16th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Marie Nicholas 514 - I think you’re absolutely right.
We shouldn’t forget that all indications point towards an accidental death and cover-up. The McCanns could be prosecuted for gross negligence (particulalrly if the accident occured when they were at Chaplins) and cover up (misleading the investigation wasting police time etc.).
Although there’s a cumulative element in Portugal’s penal code (in that they’ll accumulate sentences for a number of crimes committed), you should know that portugal’s criminal code is rather lightweight in terms of emprisonment sentences.
Ultimately it’ll be for the prosecution to work out - in view of the results of the investigation - which if any crimes can be substantiated and bring charges accordingly. The judge will then determine if they are guilty and of which crimes. It’s a relatively straightforward process - and rather transparent in that the public will have access to the prosecution files and to the court proceedings.
I’m less convinced that they’d serve a sentence in Britain rather than in Portugal - for the accidental death of Madeleine in Portugal and subsequent cover up.
Unless they have committed other crimes in Britain (in which case they’d also have to be charged and convicted by a british court). In that case I assume Britain would be able to claim that they’d need to serve their sentence in Britain before they are extradited to Portugal to serve any sentence for other crimes in the other country.
But you’re right… all this time wasted with farcical soap operas created by the McCanns and their friends may come down to a very lightweight sanction. Terribly unfair for Portugal and for the Portuguese officers that have been involved in this investigation.

Its probably a translation thing. Maybe it means no one is protected by their social or political position?
Ribelo took apart a paedo ring in Protugal which brought down a well known entertainment personality over in Portugal I understand. He doesn’t get phased y position - sounds like a thoroughly decent police officer and human being.

Yes, in general people move in the same circles as their spouses and that’s how they end up meeting. In this case it was strange, because we had a totally different circle of acquaintances/friends. Pitty he was a womanizer though! Very handsome … Mel Gibson type.
