Madeleine McCann: Anjos Calls Mitchell A Liar And Madeleine One Year On: Campaign For Change
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
THE SUN: “Cop: McCanns’ spokesman ‘lies’”
Carlos Anjos, president of Portugal’s Police Federation, says of Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns’ spokesman: “He lies with as many teeth as he has in his mouth.”
The accused the former BBC man of leaking police statements Kate and Gerry made within hours of Maddie disappearing last May. These were aired on Spanish TV last week. Anjos said the aim was to give the McCanns an excuse not to attend a reconstruction.
Says Mr Mitchell: “It is categorically untrue that I leaked them. There was absolutely no benefit for us to do that.”
THE TIMES: Andrew Billen on TV:
“It was going to be called Madeleine McCann, but now ITV1’s exclusive, has a longer name: Madeleine, One Year On: Campaign for Change. The programme will follow her parents as they campaign for an American-style Amber Alert system, in which law enforcement agencies are empowered to commandeer airtime when a child goes missing. Ah, lack of television coverage. That must have been the problem.”
Indeed.

Yeah, amazing, considering it isn’t really an important article IMO.

“Unfortunately I don’t think that accusing Mitchell of defamation will compensate.”

I believe this is a very serious warning,Salomon, and mitchell must take it into account this time,he really is OTT.
He might have a mental problem-like Carlos Anjos,so rightly pointed out- but this is not an excuse.
Machiavellism is the ability to deceive and manipulate people.
This is just clarries case: he is a pathological liar who speaks for others, like the mccanns who have a different psychological disorder, alexythimia or the inability to process and digest emotions.
A brilliant team of sickos whom the PJ had an over dose and because they wont understand anything, the PJ is threatening.Simple

The only reason I can think of is that it is to help their case with their superiors, to demonstrate what they are up against. As I understand, it is a complaint to the union and so not a direct attack from the PJ.

Would PJ keep notes of conversations as well as formal witness statements?

I think they have denied it now because this was alleged to be a deliberate leak of a witness/ suspect statement. Before it has all ben conjecture…
April 16th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
SC46 - the PJs statement in response to Clarence’s accusations says that the information divulged in the Telecinco programme was
a) not leaked by the PJ
b) not subject to secrecy of justice
The b) part was not fully understood (perhaps lost in translation). Anyone who knows portuguese law knows that “everything stated in the witness statements to the PJ” is included in the process file and is therefore subject to “secrecy of justice” - irrespective of being true, false, accurate or inaccurate.
The only way the information revealed by Telecinco would not be under “secrecy of justice” as claimed in the PJ’s public statement would be IF the information had not been volunteered to the police when Kate was questionned, and therefore was not included in the witness statement and therefore was not included in the process file and therefore is not subject to secrecy.
does it help?

Why do you find it worrying? Are you afraid the PJ are fighting in advance against pressure from their own government, due to pressure from Clarrie on the FO?
April 16th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Because they now know what happened….and letting Clarry know that
nothing will stop them proving it.

Agree. But as I said, not anything to worry about regarding swift response, just the sensible thing to do.
They are sick of the mealy mouthed talentless mouthpiece.

Ribero doesnt want to go the way of the previous man. Nothing to worry about, he is just nailing it quick. Damned good politically aware policemen I think!
I have nothing but growing resect for the people of Portugal.

I also find that the Spanish connection (w M3) is the obvious lead to this “simulated leak”.
But i do find very worrying that the PJ reacted so strongly (by their standards a public statement is what I would call a strong reaction) to Clarence’s accusations.
Clarence has accused the PJ of leaking information many times before. But they PJ have never issued public statements denying these claims or referring to him Clarence individually. Primarily because this is giving him too much importance and playing the ping-pong game of PR battle that the PJ rightly would like to avoid.
Why have they done it now?

Why is it worrying?
I think Clarrie is trying to involve the governments into it, to pressure them. They issued the statement in case it happened, to prevent pressure from their own government, maybe.

Was through Michael who posts here…he attended the LSE that night and
asked some questions too.
He said that when McGuinness was speaking about the Doc’s she meant to
say….”continue their Medical Careers”….but it came out as…”continue their
Media Careers”….she hastily corrected herself whilst blushing very noticably.

Salomon - The fact that KM didn’t mention anything about the crying comes from where?
April 16th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Matt 549
As I said, I can’t judge very well, not knowing her, and from such a short footage, yet, if she is jerky as she seems, I think it is more than occasionnal nervousness. Not a great guess anyway, she is on a rollercoster since day one. And as I said, hiding things, and being taken into a web of manoeuvres with a snowball effect, surely takes its toll.
If it was an accident, which I tend to believe, the subsequent cover up was a disaster as well as the accident.
What I think is that, if there was an accident, rather than calling for help from the local medical services, they might have tried to see to it with their friends, and not been able to save the child. It would axplain why the friends were involved in the cover up.( It is only an hypothesis to try and understand, in case of a cover up).
April 16th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Ian - it may be true - and I wouldn’t discount it.
What i’m saying is that the fact that there was crying does not actually mean anything. She could be crying even if the parents were in the apartment or she could be crying for a zillion other reasons.
But the fact that Kate did not make that statement to the PJ, the statement was divulged only now to blame the PJ and place Madeleine alive on the 3rd of May - that I find very relevant.
What worries me in this whole story is the PJ’s response to CM’s accusations. This is not the first time Clarence accuses the PJ with unsubstantiated claims of leaks. Why have they reacted with a public statement now? VERY WORRYING…

No, I didn’t, but then I’m not big on Freud
Roughly what time was it?
Incidentally, I’m showing my advanced years, but I yearn for the days when you could get transcripts. I can read a lot faster than I can listen…

a lot of local discussion I’ll try to find out more, but the driver wasn’t held solely to blame

Thanks; I know the female driver of the car who hit her was released without charge, so it narrows the field a bit.
There were reports at the end of the year that her father was to be interviewed by the police…
