I’ve always been uneasy about the media carnival, but figured if that’s what got her parents through the night, what business was it of mine.
However, one year on, there’s something distasteful about the continuing round of claim and counter-claim, blame and counter-blame.
Gerry and Kate McCann should be left alone with their demons, with our sympathy, and not live out their guilt in public any longer. The police and the private detectives should be left to get on with their job.
The Tapas Seven, the McCanns’ PR man, the professional ghouls should all keep their theories to themselves.
And their opinions?

Tapas Seven? And why speak now?
Rachael Oldfield, a 36-year-old recruitment consultant, said: “I was there on the night. I spent time with Gerry and Kate during the week before May 3 and after.
What happened?
“Their emotions and their reactions were just agonising. There’s just no way they were involved in anything to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.
“If you take the common sense approach and look at timings and the fact they are medics and there are four other medics in the group, they would know what to do to resuscitate a child.
Common sense? Doctors. Such are the facts.
“Anyone with an ounce of common sense would be able to see they couldn’t have done it. And I was there and I know they didn’t do it.”

Rachel Oldfield has a pop at the Portuguese police, and complains about being bound by law to, er, keep quiet.

Says Gerry McCann: “I think it’s safe to say we’re getting very little information. We haven’t had any communication in terms of what’s been done in the investigation.”
“We would like to know what is being done to find Madeleine. We’ve always said we want to leave no stone unturned and to do that we need to know which stones have already been overturned.”

IS it just me or are the McCanns getting on your nerves too?
It’s you. It’s them. It might be all of you.
Now, in a new TV documentary, Kate says that she wanted a baby monitor but the resort didn’t have one. So instead she, Gerry and the Tapas Seven made the bizarre decision to eat out every night and leave three young children home alone. I’m sorry, in any language that’s child neglect.
Sorry? Why is Gaunt sorry?
And, by the way, I’m not being heartless, just honest.
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “Madeleine McCann’s father: police gave up”
Mr McCann tells BBC Radio 4 interviewer Steve Kingstone: “We would like to know what is being done to find Madeleine. We’d like know who has been eliminated from the inquiry and on what grounds and what leads are still being followed.”

Sorry for adding something, but then I’m going…!
The other odd thing is neither set of in-laws seems suspicious of either K or G.
If K was unstable, for example, or a poor mother, I would have expected the sisters-in-law to be the first to wonder if she had harmed Madeleine and to probe for the truth, if only in the hope of protecting their brother. Similarly, G’s mother and his brothers.
If K’s parents thought it likely that G might have harmed Madeleine, I would have expected them to have things to say. A mother-in-law usually has few illusions about her son-in-law!
They all appear to have remained very united. After twelve months, I would have expected some cracks to have appeared.
I am drawing no conclusions, only observing. Again, can only go by the media. Maybe they are all accusing each other left, right and centre.

I find it hard to believe they haven’t thought about that…..just a bit! Don’t you think they may have had the odd the chat about it?! Or do you think they’ve only been talking about the state of the NHS over the last twelve months?
The fact that the tapas friends remain (apparently) totally convinced of the Mcs’ innocence, is one of the puzzling things about this case.
Although I take chenier’s point about Oldfield, to an extent (”Well, she would say that, wouldn’t she?”), I’m still not entirely sure that she would! Certainly her “posh” accent, which annoys jo so much, is entirely irrelevant, as is her apparent nervous speed in talking and her clumsy reference to doctors and resuscitation, which could even be taken as demonstrating a positive LACK of the careful preparation one might expect from a guilty person. If guilty, I don’t think I would have made her errors of presentation, if that’s all there was to it!
How many people would actually protect friends, or even a spouse, if they thought one of them had killed a child or was covering up her death and had disposed secretly and illegally of her body? We are talking here about a dead child, if they knew she’d been killed or had died accidentally. This is not like most other “crimes” or offences. This is a serious, heinous crime involving the death or disappearance of a little child whom they all knew. If we feel moved by the tragedy, how much more people who knew her? Would Oldfield (R) really be likely to cover up for someone else?
Maybe but I’m not totally convinced.
Perhaps it’s true that people who know the Mcs very well, including, presumably, more about their relationship with Madeleine than we do, might actually have some significant insight into this business. In particular, they saw their reaction after the event, in private. We didn’t. We have no “feel” about their family relationships. They do. If Madeleine was alive and well up until the evening of the 3rd May, they know. We don’t. (Presumably the police have checked this and also know!) If none of them saw her that day, would it not have later set alarm bells ringing?
They may be completely convinced of the Mcs’ innocence because of the totality of the particular circumstances as well as their prior knowledge of the Mcs; and they may be correct.
They may be covering their crime for them. In that case, one really has to wonder why.
The Mcs may be guilty but have been able to fool the tapas friends. I would have thought that would be difficult. Not impossible, but difficult, and not very likely to have happened.
One or more of the tapas friends may be the criminal(s), unknown to K and G and the rest of the group. Again, I would have thought that unlikely, though, of course, not impossible. Surely K and G, especially, but the others too, will have gone through every possible scenario, assuming that they are innocent themselves? They will have considered the possibility of one or more of the group being the guilty party.
The whole group may be involved in criminal activities themselves and have a reason for sticking together, whichever of them committed this particular crime. However, from what we know (probably very little!) they appear not to have any “form” in that respect. I did read that one of the docs has some sort of current complaint against him. That may or may not be true but if it is true, he’s one of many and it would not be safe to assume it automatically means he’s a child-killer or similar. Otherwise they appear to be respected and well-liked colleagues, friends and neighbours. I haven’t seen any particularly negative comments about them from people who actually know them. Has anyone else? The press may be being careful now but I guess many journos tried to dig up as much dirt as possible in the early days. They didn’t seem to get much further than a possible reference to K twenty years ago, in her student days, as “Hot lips Healy”!!! (How quaintly innocent that seems today!) We did have the early Portuguese press reports, repeated by some of the dafter (and poorer!) UK papers, about “swinging” but where on earth did that come from?! And even swinging doesn’t equal child-killing. I’ve been told there are quite a number of people who have several different partners within their social group but don’t necessarily murder children or fail to report their deaths. I believe many doctors are unfaithful to their partners……may not be true of course! The swinging smears were in the same vein as the long-lunches, fat pig smears against Amaral. (Which poor devil shall we beat up today, folks??!!)
I’m really not sure which of these scenarios appears to me to be the most likely.
Of course, an abduction by a stranger is also, by its very nature and infrequency, an unlikely occurrence, even more so when the mystery remains unsolved. The Portuguese police continue to maintain the arguido status of the three original arguidos.
These are facts which cannot be ignored.
And now, having added precisely nothing to the attempt to find an actual solution to this mystery, I’d better get some other stuff done! But then…..who has added anything useful? M3??????? Er……no…….don’t think so…..yet! The PJ????? Possibly. We don’t really know. The seers, clairvoyants and prophets? Apparently not! The amateur sleuths? Not yet, it would seem…….even on Anorak! The wretched McCann and Healy families? Heaven help them in their personal hells.
We still have absolutely no idea where Madeleine went or what happened to her. (If the police really knew, surely they would have said something by now? Maybe not?) I’m sure we all await the outcome with interest and as much patience as possible.
