Since my daughter Rosie was a baby, she has always come everywhere with us when we go on holiday, especially to child-friendly countries such as Portugal, Spain and Greece. We wouldn’t have dreamed about leaving her behind to go for a meal because we go away to spend as much time as possible together as a family.

I wonder if the McCanns were as casual with their passports and valuables when they went out at night because as far as I am concerned there is nothing more precious than your child and they appear to have had scant regard for their safety.

In Greek tragedy, Antigone, the daughter of King Oedipus, cannot rest until she has recovered the body of her brother after his death in battle and given it a proper burial. One suffering leads to another. And there is some of that obsession, and that remorselessness, in the case of the McCanns.
But:
Do the two doctors really deserve two whole hours of prime-time when so many other people’s kids are lost and thousands are dying in Zimbabwe? Even those, like me, who have never doubted Gerry and Kate’s innocence must feel a flinch of unease.

Yes it is a major problem. One that Portugal will probably never forgive the UK for. Good ol British politics. Talk about cemeting relatiosnships the world over. My Heroes K & G - I’ve left my kids loads of times, but, the difference is, I left them with a babysitter.. If you think leaving children alone so you can have a break, then I think its you who is a selfish pathetic animal! then again.. not even animals leave their young to fend for themselves!

Only recently I became familiar with the change of the law in the UK (i saw it in another board).
I believe that there may be ways of enacting the same effect of that UK law in Portugal even without changing the existing portuguese penal code. But it’s not as straightforward as the routes I outlined in my previous post (determining time of death or confession).

And if it is possible to bring such charges within the existing code, then so much the better.
Our legislation includes deaths caused by neglect; would that also be the case in Portugual?
