Madeleine McCann: Tabloid Columnists On Harry Potter, Frtizl And Bile
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to the columnists’ views on Madeleine McCann and family:
JANE MOORE (Sun): “Silence is not an option for the McCanns”
“Just suppose little Madeleine is trapped in a cellar somewhere, hidden from view while her warped captor conducts a seemingly normal life upstairs.”
Like Elisabeth Frtizl? It’s Tabloid Bingo. Eye down…
LORRAINE KELLY (Sun): “They deserve sympathy, not condemnation”
Since my daughter Rosie was a baby, she has always come everywhere with us when we go on holiday, especially to child-friendly countries such as Portugal, Spain and Greece. We wouldn’t have dreamed about leaving her behind to go for a meal because we go away to spend as much time as possible together as a family.
JON GAUNT (Sun): “I have little support for them”
Do you remember when you put your first baby to bed with a listening monitor and sat downstairs watching the box almost with subtitles on so you could hear every heartbeat?
If you heard an unexpected cough or belch you would sprint up the stairs faster than druggy Dwain Chambers on steroids to check on your little angel. That’s called parenting, isn’t it?
I wonder if the McCanns were as casual with their passports and valuables when they went out at night because as far as I am concerned there is nothing more precious than your child and they appear to have had scant regard for their safety.
ALLISON PEARSON (Mail): “The McCann campaign must NOT go on for ever”
Since May 3 last year, how many parents have mentally run the “Maddie safety test|” before daring to turn away from their children even for a moment? That may be her lasting legacy and our greatest burden.
Still, my small boy is not satisfied. “Maddie” is the big story of his childhood, bigger even than Harry Potter and infinitely more disturbing.
Harry Potter is Madeleine McCann? It’s all just stories. Any others?
There is a fascination in a momentary mistake that can never be undone, no matter how much a mother persecutes herself. In Greek tragedy, Antigone, the daughter of King Oedipus, cannot rest until she has recovered the body of her brother after his death in battle and given it a proper burial. One suffering leads to another. And there is some of that obsession, and that remorselessness, in the case of the McCanns.
But:
Do the two doctors really deserve two whole hours of prime-time when so many other people’s kids are lost and thousands are dying in Zimbabwe? Even those, like me, who have never doubted Gerry and Kate’s innocence must feel a flinch of unease.

” Thank you for the explanation, by the way! The argument is really bizarre, don’t you think? She accuses the MCs of being self-centered, no matter how they persecute themselves, and of frightening little children? !!! ”
That has always been an interesting question to me. How self centered may parents be in order to find a lost child? The campaign may be fruitless, but then again it may turn out to be useful in the end. How can we judge about it now, before we know the final outcome?
The campaign does not hurt anyone directly and physically, but there may be more indirect effects, such as frightened children, abduction paranoia etc.
So did they go too far? Is their behaviour reasonable, or at least acceptable? Without knowing the outcome, I simply can’t say - no, really I can’t.

Morning all. the above is the latest news on the McCanns,.
Breakast TV (BBC 1)
announced half an hour ago that the McCanns would be guests and for viewers to
e-mail or phone in questions they wish to ask them.
Either they know the arguido status is to be lifted when Murat”s is due on 14th May, or they are raking in as much money as they can before they are charged!!!!!! My guess
is the former unfortunately, because they are now openly criticising the PJ.
My question would be ” Don”t you feel embarassed that your Celebrity status is
solely due to neglecting your children”s safety and welfare”.

Sorry Val but i think its neither!

” But the comparison with Antigone is so far fetched, and absolutely not relevant. Anouilh doesn’t depict her as self-delusioned, IMO, but as a very young girl who doesn’t accept compromise. Creon, her uncle, tries to save her against herself (and against himself), but she refuses to do so at the cost of her loyalty. She dies from being loyal to her dead brother and to her beliefs. What has it got to do with any character in the MC’s case? ”
She is very stubborn, stupid and reckless. Anouilh wrote it in the 20th century, where most people didn’t actually believe that it was physically necessary to bury a corpse in order to save the soul of the deceased. It is only a token gesture. So she throws her life away for a symbolic gesture. In our days she would probably be an islamic fundamentalist.
The comparison to the McCann campaign is maybe a bit exaggerated, because the campaign itself is not a matter of life or death for K&G - they seem to believe that it’s vital for Madeleine, but that is possibly self-delusion. It is not my comparison, but I see the point about obsession and remorselessness.

The machine McCann told in French
A third book, this time in french, will provide a different vision of the case McCann.
Cosigned by several journalists and edited in Belgium, the book tells how and why the media machine has been put in place even before the start of the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Scheduled for June, it not only demonstrates how British diplomacy has influenced the conduct of investigations, but also and especially how the help of the state has been put to the McCanns disposition, but it also explains what was the role of each stakeholder.
Other confidential documents and transcripts of recordings of telephone calls will illustrate the story.

Regardless of the idiom of publication, the couple McCann, according to a close source, is ready to initiate prosecution against the inspector if his book reveals some details of events surrounding the disappearance of Maddie.
In Portugal, the couple’s lawyers have already addressed the question whether the inspector would have or not, the right to publish a book revealing details of an investigation he himself directed and which it must keep a certain reserve despite his announcement to leave the framework of the PJ.
Informal contacts were made with the National Directorate of the Judicial Police to find out the possible limitations that Gonçalo Amaral would have”

The announcement of the publication of the book “The truth lies”, signed by the inspector of the Judicial Police (PJ) Gonçalo Amaral, former head of the investigation in the disappearance of Madeleine, worried Kate and Gerry McCann who asked their lawyers to prohibit any publication.

So, the value of the campaign is questionable. It even does harm to other children, but the McCanns don’t care about that. They only care about their own goal, and the campaign is probably born out of self-delusion (Antigone!). Do you know Jean Anouilh’s version of the play?

The value of the campaign is not even questionable because it is clear there was no abduction. The whole thing is to clear themselves, NOTHING else.

Yes,they ONLY care about themselves,to the point others are taking them to court for trying to swallow them in their campaign,”leaving the door opened” for a killer to take THEIR very own child.
I am NOT saying this is what happened but it has been considered ” a contributive factor”

I still don’t understand the remorselessness well. Who is remorseless? ”
Mrs. Pearson is angy with the McCanns because their campaign frightens her little son and possibly other children. (That is, her son is frightened by Madeleines story, and the story is brought to him through the campaign.)
So, the value of the campaign is questionable. It even does harm to other children, but the McCanns don’t care about that. They only care about their own goal, and the campaign is probably born out of self-delusion (Antigone!). Do you know Jean Anouilh’s version of the play?
