Tomorrow is the first anniversary of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance. A year ago today, Kate and Gerry McCann were enjoying another day in the Portuguese sunshine. For the very last time, their perfect family unit was complete and their reputations as conscientious parents were intact.
The Ocean Club Resort was ideal for a young family. There were as many activities for the kids as for the adults and the whole complex was organised around the various kids clubs so you could relax for hours without having to think twice about the little ones. What made it even better was that seven of the McCann’s closest friends were also there with their kids so there was no shortage of friendly company.
On the morning of day six, like most other mornings, Kate and Gerry left all three children off at the kids club session after breakfast, then headed off for a walk around the local village.
By now the routine was well established. After their stroll, they collected Maddie, Sean and Amelie at 12.30pm and brought them back to the apartment for lunch before going to meet up with the rest of the party at the Ocean Club poolside. While the kids splashed together, the adults could catch up on the events of the day so far and to sunbathe.
At 3.30pm the kids were once again whisked off to the kid’s club to give their parents another session of “me time”. Two and a half hours later, after the kids had been fed and watered by the staff, Kate collected them and brought them back to the apartment while Gerry played an hour of tennis on the complex’s tennis court. He returned at 7pm by which time we’re told the kids were ready for bed.
What happened in the next few hours has been the subject of much speculation. But one of the few undisputed facts is that within the next hour and a half, the McCanns left their three infant children alone in order for them to join their friends for dinner and drinks in a bar. Completely alone. In an unlocked apartment. In a foreign country. As night fell. No matter how you look at this, no matter what excuse they might give, the bitter truth still remains the same. Although one year has passed, their decision seems even more impossible to justify or understand. Because we now know that on the previous night, Madeleine had awoken to find herself alone with her twin siblings and had cried for her parents who, of course, didn’t hear as they were at the Tapas Bar having fun with their friends. The next morning, Madeleine — still upset — had challenged her mum: ” Why didn’t you come when we were crying last night?”
And yet, despite this, they still went out and did the same thing again on the night of May 3, knowing now that it was possible for their infant children to wake-up alone, cry and never be heard.
The door was left unlocked so Maddie could have stumbled out into the night, disorientated, looking for her absent parents. There was a busy road and adult pool nearby. In fact, any number of nightmare possibilities emerge before you even consider the chance of a lurking intruder …
Like all mothers, I pity Kate McCann for the agony she must be going through. But I see this unbearable situation as a lesson to them and all other part-time parents who place personal convenience and pleasure above the most important role they will ever have in their lives. Which is, quite simply, to protect their children and keep them from harm.

Scarlett - I agree. In any case, does it really matter what Mrs. Fenn might have heard or complained about, since the fact that the children had crying was confirmed by the Mccann’s themselves (well, indirectly)?

Another thing, it is a bit of a coincidence that both stories are about the same thing - Maddie crying and her parents not being there. So if the Mrs Fenn/MW story has no truth in it, then whoever made it up either knew what K&G said in their statements or took a very wild guess that luckily turned out to reflect K&Gs’ statements.

Actually she said she never spoke with journalists, she never said a single word… But that doesn’t mean that she did not speak with the police, or that word of the complaint of the child crying was not reported by the OC staff (to whom she probably would have complained)

Have seen reports this week (daily Mirror) that Mrs Fenton still lives in apartment. Would like a reported to check again with her.
If McCanns are found to be misleading public on this point, it would give a big clue to their charectors. Am still unsure what to make of them.

It was actually a Mrs Fenn, and then the statement was retracted. If she has made a statement to the police she has every right to refuse to speak to a reporter as it would break the secrecy rules.

I thought the story went further than this - i.e. that someone complained to the Ocean Club about the kids crying and Mark Warner staff actually took the matter up with the parents. So either the story is completely made up, or it is completely true and can be backed up by at least two independent witnesses (the person who heard/reported the crying, and the staff member who dealt with the complaint.) Then it would be further backed up by the leaked story about Maddie herself apparently mentioning the incident the next morning.
Perhaps janeela also means that this part of the story will be interesting to see when/if the secrecy is lifted. Cos on ITV K&G certainly gave the impression that it all came down to some very brief remark made by Maddie and they had no real reason to think anything of it at the time.

The whole of the story around Mrs Fenn is very cloudy, if she has made a statement to PJ we won’t know yet.
I agree there was some talk of Mark Warner receiving complaints about crying children, but making it ‘fit’ around Madeleine could just be comjecture in the extreme and not at all factual

I think you’re forgetting the many children who never make the headlines but have been abducted by the non-custodial parent (usually the foreign father). They occasionally have programs about them on Spanish TV and there seem to be quite a large number. I don’t know enough about Amber Alert to form a proper opinion but maybe it would help to avoid this.

actually mrs Fenn didn’t retract her story or change it… she said she have never made that statement in the first place. Its on youtube somewhere in English and Spanish and she is VERY angry.
