Madeleine McCann: Josef Fritzl, Tabloid Bingo And Watching Kate McCann
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR (front page): “We’ll find Madeleine ourselves”
It is the McCanns’ “EXTRAORDINARY VOW”.
Any news of Metodo 3, the sleuths who would find Madeleine by last Christmas?
TWINS IN VOW TO FIND SIS - MISSING MADELEINE McCANN: ONE YEAR ON
The McCanns’ three-year-old twins Sean and Amelie have promised their grieving parents they will rescue their missing big sister.
Well, why not let them have a go?
Says Gerry McCann: “Madeleine is everywhere in our lives.” All our lives.
IRISH INDEPENDENT: “’One year on, we’re no closer to finding Maddy’”
Says Kate McCann: “There has been that much speculation in a lot of the media, particularly the written press. It’s taking away people searching for Madeleine.”
Says Kate McCann, and not Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns’ media handler.
POLO SHIRTS (a company selling T-shirts): “T-Shirts can be very valuable tools in helping to find missing children. Think about how many people see you each and every day. If you are wearing a T-shirt with the picture of a missing child on it then all of those people are also seeing the child and, hopefully, watching for her everywhere that they go. In the case of Madeleine McCann, the sale of T-Shirts is also helping to raise money for Madeleine’s fund: Leaving No Stone Unturned.”
Let’s hear it for the T-shirts!
GLASGOW DAILY RECORD: “Tragedy Breeds Tourism”
It is a year since Madeleine McCann vanished.
Madeleine McCann and Josef Fritzl? We’ve already had the McCanns and Elisabeth Fritzl. There’s a link? Joan Burnie sees one..
The apartment from which the then three-year-old disappeared has now become a sick tourist attraction, where people take their own kiddies to be photographed where once Madeleine slept.
Next year, can we expect the Austrian Tourist Board to promote tours of the dungeon in which Josef Fritzl incarcerated and abused his daughter?
THE SUN: “Dungeon rescue gives me hope”
Madeleine McCann and Elisabeth Fritzl? A link?
MISSING Madeleine McCann’s mum told yesterday how the astonishing rescue of Austrian dungeon girl Elisabeth Fritzl has given her fresh hope that her daughter is still alive.
Kate, 40, said that hearing how Elisabeth was saved after 24 years imprisonment renewed her belief that little Maddie may also be held captive somewhere.
It’s Tabloid Bingo! Bingo! Bingo!
METRO: “Dungeon fear for Maddy”
THE GUARDIAN: “Fritzl case proves long-term missing can re-emerge, say McCanns”
The couple had taken hope from the case of Elisabeth Fritzl, the Austrian woman whose father locked her in a cellar beneath his house for 24 years, and fathered seven children with her, said Gerry McCann.
DAILY MAIL (front page): “Kate: one year on: A portrait of torment”
Kate McCann is a “GP”.
DAILY TELEGRAPH (front page): “MADELEINE JUST FEELS VERY CLOSE”
Kate McCann:
It’s a sense, really. Madeleine just feels very close. It’s more of a kind of sensation that she’s there. You try to be objective and think, ‘Is that just because I’m her mum and I want to believe it?’ But it hasn’t changed.

BBC seems to have organised all their McCann stories. There appears to be many reports I have not seen before, but can’t post the link - search McCannon BBC website.
—————–
Today BBC ‘McCanns appeal to police callers’
“This is the last chance to capture a lot of information which has maybe gone into the investigation and we are not privy to,” Mr McCann said. “Clearly we need to know that everything has been done. What we are asking people to do is if you have given information to police, Crimestoppers, the Portuguese police, we are asking you to give it to us as well.” …He said they have “little bits of the jigsaw” but there were still “huge gaps”. …Her parents had been eating with friends at a nearby tapas restaurant and were later named as suspects by Portuguese police….But because of Portuguese secrecy laws, the police have not shared the information they have collected with the couple….The phone line will be formally launched on Friday with pre-recorded interviews from a London hotel…. Mr McCann told reporters: “Today is about Madeleine and today is about us stating our absolute categoric belief that there’s no evidence Madeleine has been seriously harmed’.
In another article September 2008 ‘McCanns say life is ‘unbearable’ …
Alipio Ribeiro, national director of the investigative Policia Judiciaria (PJ) told Portuguese state broadcaster RTP: “We can’t say with certainty whether it was the blood of person A or person B. They help guide us in our investigation but not with the mathematical precision some people are saying.”
———–
That was a long time ago (Sept) so I wonder if there have been developments in the forensic analysis to indicate serious harm and Madeleine’s death as reported earlier.

The McCanns come to Brussels
Never has the European Parliament seen so many cameras – not for Jacques Chirac or Tony Blair, not for John Paul II or the Dalai Lama. As Gerry and Kate McCann arrived, the television crews and paparazzi shoaled like piranhas, their equipment castanet-clicking. You occasionally hear people making the unlovely assertion that the McCanns “court publicity”. I wonder whether their critics have dwelt on what it means to have lenses constantly thrust in your face, cameramen running backwards before you wherever you go.
I had resolved never to write about the McCann case. Much of the coverage has been prurient and salacious. Some has been downright nauseating. This morning, outside the committee room in which the McCanns were arguing for an international alert system for missing children, someone was handing out leaflets suggesting that “what they should be doing is campaigning on the theme of ‘Do not leave your children unattended in unlocked apartments whilst you enjoy alcohol-fuelled dinners at a distance where you cannot observe them, as we did”’.
The cause which the McCanns were championing – an “Amber Alert”, similar to the systems in France and the USA, which have led to the successful recovery of several abducted minors – is unexceptionable. And it is perfectly reasonable to seek to co-ordinate such a scheme at European level. If the EU stuck to cross-border issues of this kind, no one would have a problem with it.
Yet critics asked in all seriousness whether it was proper for the European Parliament to invite people who were formal suspects in a criminal investigation. (An odd question when you think of how many MEPs have been not merely been named as formal suspects in criminal investigations, but convicted.)
I have no idea what happened on the night that Madeleine McCann disappeared. But I know that a little girl is missing. I know that there is such a thing as presumption of innocence. And I know that, whatever happened, the McCanns have already suffered more than the rest of us can imagine.
What I find most disquieting about the whole affair is the reaction it has provoked in other people: in a minority, to be sure, but not an insignificant minority. You hear casual comments – I heard one just now, typing this on the Eurostar – to the effect that they were neglectful parents. (Significantly, you almost never hear these from other parents of young children.) Then – and this is what I find really creepy – there is the whole spiel about them not behaving as distraught parents should, about there being something dodgy in their “publicity seeking”, about Kate finding the time to touch up her roots.
I don’t know how I’d react if one of my daughters went missing. But I suspect I’d do everything in my power to keep her face in the news, which is, when you think about it, what “publicity seeking” means. As for the notion that Kate is too poised or too cool, I find it as inexplicable as I do unedifying. As I watched her this morning, her anguish was palpable, all the more harrowing for being kept under control. Like most people in the room, I felt an almost overpowering urge to throw an arm around her shoulders and give her a cup of tea.
The worst of it is that, unless Madeleine is rescued, or a body is found, there will never be closure. The McCanns will spend their lives in limbo, the conspiracy-theorists will carry on weaving their skeins of suspicion, the columnists will continue to obtrude their opinions. Well, this one won’t. Quod scripsi scripsi. I have no intention of writing about the subject ever again.

Hi everyone, dont know if you have seen this, must have been embarassing for the
McCanns to have those leaflets handed out, wonder who organised that?

I would like to say thank you to the thousands of persons that every day, for the last year, are supporting me all over the world. I would like to answer all the phone calls, emails and letters, but is not possible…there are so many! As you can imagine, most of the days are not that easy, and these messages have been a great support not only for me, but also for my family. Once again, thank you all!
*Soon, very soon the world will know the “Truth about the Lie” and “we will gain truth and justice for a little girl who has no voice”, dead on the evening of May 3rd at apartment 5A, Ocean Club, Praia da Luz, Algarve, Portugal”*
Best regards,

But couldn’t they clear the whole thing up by saying “oh and those crying complaint stories are untrue, no one from MW or otherwise complained to us.”?
Or maybe they can’t due to the secrecy thing.

A young child walked up to her mother and stared at her hair. As mother scrubbed on the dishes, the girl cleared her throat and sweetly asked; “Why do you have some grey strands in your hair?”
The mother paused and looked at her daughter. “Every time you disobey, I get one strand of grey hair. If you want me to stay pretty, you better obey.”
The mother quickly returned to her task of washing dishes. The little girl stood there thinking. She cleared her throat again. “Mother?” She sweetly asked again.
“Yes?” Her Mother replied. “Why is Grandma’s hair all grey?”

Time will tell.
The “reports” by Mrs Fenn etc may be unrelated to Madeleine…
but it would be ironic if the McCann’s have added the “remonstrating”
story to their…er….statement….just in case.

The whole of the story around Mrs Fenn is very cloudy, if she has made a statement to PJ we won’t know yet.
I agree there was some talk of Mark Warner receiving complaints about crying children, but making it ‘fit’ around Madeleine could just be comjecture in the extreme and not at all factual

I agree, but as I say a bit of a coincidence in the light of the recent “leak.”

Scarlett - I agree. In any case, does it really matter what Mrs. Fenn might have heard or complained about, since the fact that the children had crying was confirmed by the Mccann’s themselves (well, indirectly)?
_____________
I think jane ella’s point was that if a complaint had been highlighted to the parents, then this wouldn’t square with the account given during the ITV documentary.

Right, the dastardly villain navigating around a pitch black apartment, using a sedative unknown to science in order to keep Madeleine and the twins quiet, tucking her under one arm whilst he got the window plus shutters open, levitating over the window sill in order not to disturb the algae and then striding purposefully off down the road.
Well, I suppose you would be purposeful if you had a bear on your trail, wouldn’t you?

Another possibility could be that a neighbour did complain but wanted to remain anonymous, but then MW passed this info on to the police and it was later leaked to the press. I must admit I’d be a bit hacked off if I said to the hotel staff “look I don’t want to get anyone into trouble, and please keep my name out of it, but there’s this kiddie…” etc only for the whole thing then to be all over the tabloids!
