McGuckin In McCann Peril: Foreign Crimes In Foreign Climes
BRITONS planning trips to the new Portugal should go equipped with a loud hailer, a private detective and nothing too shiny. If on a driving holiday, ensure the boot can be opened from within.
Listen to the tale told by Eamon and Antionette McGuckin, who found their three children in the care of the Portuguese – and what irony there, readers – after they were attacked by a “Rohypnol gang”.
One would imagine that given the paralysing powers of the so-called date rape drug, the Rohypnol Gang are not much cop at ganging, preferring to lie down and wait their victim to trip over them. It would help if the victims were drunk.
But this gang is armed with the drug and slipping it into the “small jug” of sangria the McGuckins were quaffing, sipping, even. (Although the Mirror’s Sue Carroll sees the “dog tired, hot and thirsty” couple taking beer – mucky foreign beer.)
Says a friend of the family, namely a Dr Cyril Harkin: “Neither of them are big drinkers. They have tried to understand what happened and have linked the sangria with the sudden decline in their health. They believe they were drugged by someone trying to rob them.”
The GP puts the tin lid on the matter by saying: “The Portuguese authorities are paranoid after the Madeleine McCann case.”
We are not anti-foreigner, and are quite confident that if the entire peoples of continental Europe were placed in a cell we could find a dozen for a game of cricket and a scorer, but can only conclude that the vast mojortity Portuguese are the scum of the Earth and in need of hanging…

Good for you.
My sympathies would be engaged rather further were it not for:
‘The amount of alcohol they consumed between the hours of 8pm and 10pm would not have been sufficient to render them incapable of being responsible parents.’
In other words, we’re not going to tell you how much we had to drink but we’ve got a lawyer who says we’re OK…

Hes a funny looking fella on sky news aint he?
May 7th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Very lengthy statement from the parents up on Sky, denying everything, but refusing to take any questions etc etc.
Which is very wise since there are rather a lot of holes…
It appears that they have abandoned the Rohypnol claim, though…

Oh dear; you can’t get any more down market than a Bargain Shopping Channel, and there’s not much opportunity to display his scintillating wit.
We will have to hope he doesn’t do a Ratner…

cool - wasn’t sure as i’ve been off for a few days. I don’t think he could argue any case if he’s been caught red handed on air!

From BBC:-
Sacked radio presenter James Whale has landed a job on a TV shopping channel.
The controversial phone-in host was fired from Talksport after urging listeners to vote for Boris Johnson in London’s mayoral election.
He is now joining home shopping channel Bid TV and said his career had “come full circle” as he worked as a trainee buyer at Harrods “some years ago”.
Bid TV said the 56-year-old would appear on screens in an evening slot, starting later this month.
“It won’t be long before I know more about diamond jewellery, toasters and kettles than anyone could ever imagine,” said Whale, who added he was “up for a new challenge”.
Andy Hodgson, a spokesman for Bid TV, said Talksport’s loss was his channel’s gain.
“We’re delighted to welcome James on board and expect him to stoke some bargain-hunting fever amongst our viewers in his true, inimitable style.”
Ofcom investigation
Industry regulator Ofcom is investigating three complaints made about comments in Whale’s broadcast on Talksport on 20 March.
The presenter encouraged voters in London to choose the Tory candidate in the mayoral election.
It is illegal for broadcasters to show any bias towards a political party in the run-up to any such poll.
Talksport said the presenter’s contract was terminated after a breach of the Ofcom broadcasting code on impartiality.
“James Whale is guilty of a gross error of judgement, which we found to be totally unacceptable,” a spokesman for the station said.

Investigation. Internal decision.

It’s possible that they were already unhappy, and Vote Boris was the final straw.
I recall a poster here claiming that Whale was noted for his scintillating wit…

” So rudeness is not OK but getting drunk whilst caring for your children is? ”
IF the parents were culpable in any way, then they should first apologise to their children for spoiling the holidays. Then maybe to the hotel management for causing inconvenience. Then maybe to the judge for causing a pointless investigation.

You know I always say that my mums favourite saying is - ‘there’s always a day called catch ‘um’
well that day eventually arrived for one person who got a fair bit of stick on here and that is James Whale.
He got sacked from talk sport! Not sure if it was reported on here or not

May 7th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Ferdinand - I have said that I am NOT concerned. I have said that I don’t understand the runner, because there was no reason for it. However that doesn’t mean that I am not a heavy drinker.
