McGuckin In McCann Peril: Foreign Crimes In Foreign Climes
BRITONS planning trips to the new Portugal should go equipped with a loud hailer, a private detective and nothing too shiny. If on a driving holiday, ensure the boot can be opened from within.
Listen to the tale told by Eamon and Antionette McGuckin, who found their three children in the care of the Portuguese – and what irony there, readers – after they were attacked by a “Rohypnol gang”.
One would imagine that given the paralysing powers of the so-called date rape drug, the Rohypnol Gang are not much cop at ganging, preferring to lie down and wait their victim to trip over them. It would help if the victims were drunk.
But this gang is armed with the drug and slipping it into the “small jug” of sangria the McGuckins were quaffing, sipping, even. (Although the Mirror’s Sue Carroll sees the “dog tired, hot and thirsty” couple taking beer – mucky foreign beer.)
Says a friend of the family, namely a Dr Cyril Harkin: “Neither of them are big drinkers. They have tried to understand what happened and have linked the sangria with the sudden decline in their health. They believe they were drugged by someone trying to rob them.”
The GP puts the tin lid on the matter by saying: “The Portuguese authorities are paranoid after the Madeleine McCann case.”
We are not anti-foreigner, and are quite confident that if the entire peoples of continental Europe were placed in a cell we could find a dozen for a game of cricket and a scorer, but can only conclude that the vast mojortity Portuguese are the scum of the Earth and in need of hanging…

There are degrees in irresponsibility.

Indeed there are. And that is my point. I do not class their act as ‘neglect’.
May 7th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Marie Nicholas:
And I can’t believe that they ALL did it!
Night after night, eight children, all under four (Madeleine was the eldest) were left to fend for themselves in various PdL apartments.
It doesn’t make sense.
Babies and toddlers don’t sleep to order. With babies, there’s the ever-present danger of being sick and choking.
In most couples, there’s usually one - mother or father - who is the “fussy” one who puts the children before anything, especially dinner out night after night.
Odd that here, every single mother and father (and one grandmother) seems not to have blinked an eye about leaving their babies (because that’s what they were) quite alone.
I feel we don’t know the full truth about this. Especially when we learn, out of the blue, that Rachael Oldfield was in fact in her flat on the night of May 2.
I think they were less neglectful than we’ve been told.
If so, why the lies?

Why should WTF be judged for passing an opinion or is that not something she is entitled to?
And the whole reason we are on this forum is to question and discuss so where would it leave us with nothing to debate? Just a thought but you seem so defensive and hostile to all posters. We can’t maybe be all as enlightened as you, but surely we are all equally allowed to post our thoughts here?

Why are the McCanns having to do their own investigation, and call up old witnesses etc, when they’ve been paying Metodo3 £50,000 a month for months?
—————
All they are doing is making the appeal. Im sure any leads will be passed on to them.
The lack of progress they claim is simply because they have heard nothing and are still arguidos. There daughter is still missing. What do you want them to do, tell the world they think the PJ are doing a fine job?
May 7th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Garth says “but then how many people in this world can hold their hands up and say that at some point they havent been irresponsible? Not many i would guess.”
———
If we follow that line of reasoning, nobody should be told what they do is wrong. Everything is allowed since everyone of us has done “something irresponsible” at one time or another.
I have forgotten to put suncream on my child so I can’t say you were careless because you left your children alone at night . What, you have done it every night during your holidays? Well I can’t say anything because I didn’t brush his teeth before he went to bed yesterday. What, you didn’t lock the door? Well I can’t say anything because I only gave him processed food for dinner as I didn’t have time to cook for him.
There are degrees in irresponsibility.

They try to blame lack of progress on the PJ, yet say nothing about the complete failure of their own detectives to get anywhere.
And why did their backer Kennedy take it upon himself to try to get Murat onside?

Strange isant it? Not Gerry’s blog, but how you read it compared to myself. To me, there is honesty, sincerity, desperation and sadness. And then there’s yourself, who can only question the one liners.
Should Gerry be judged or yourself wtf?

Robotic….is such a good word. Its nails him entirely. Its strange that the one year blog entry about madeleine once agains is used to flog the amber alert system (which is a great idea) but if it was a year since my child was whoosh clunked I would make sure that day was devoted to her solely and for once back off on the marketing of Amber Alert or anything else! And as for the flowers, they looked like petrol station forecourt flowers…..such thought. I very much doubt I would have got out of bed.

Gerrys blog
Day 366: 03/05/2008 Day:
It is a year to the day since Madeleine was abducted. A heinous crime that had the potential to destroy the strongest of families. Without doubt it has been the longest year of our lives, yet it does not seem like a year since we last saw Madeleine. She is still a large part of Sean and Amelie’s life and this gives some comfort to Kate and me.
The research we have done this year has encouraged us to believe that there is a very good chance Madeleine is alive. Ernie Allen, president of NCMEC for the last 25 years, has reiterated that and the fact there are a number of scenarios in which Madeleine could be alive and well. We just need to find her.
The documentary we made on an EU wide Amber alert and the last year was screened in the UK on Wednesday night, in Spain on Thursday and last night in Portugal. We have spent most of the last 3 days promoting our new hotline number +44 845 838 4699 (calls are charged at local rate) and our e-mail addresses for information: anonymous@findmadeleine.com and investigation@findmadeleine.com .
We have always said we will leave no stone unturned in the search for Madeleine. To do that we need to know what has and has not been done- unfortunately we know very little about the investigation to date. This is why we are appealing to everyone who may have come forward previously to do so again. Every piece of information is important to us. We are also appealing to people who may not have come forward for whatever reason to do so. We are only interested in finding Madeleine and will guarantee confidentiality and anonymity if requested. We are also families asking with children to think if something similar may have happened to them. It is unlikely this is the first time that the abductor has struck.
Today we will be attending one of the many services to pray for Madeleine and other missing children. We would like to thank everyone, of all faiths, who has prayed for Madeleine over the last year. The Helping to find Madeleine group have also organised a ‘lighting the way home for Madeleine’ event where, they will release lanterns in Rothley around the time she went missing. Others will light a candle and we greatly appreciate the support and symbolic gestures

perhaps if it were one occasion and one believed in an abduction, but this was four days in a row by all accounts. irresponsible to me kind of implies a one off thing, and yes, agreed i dont’ think there’s many who can say they haven’t done anything silly or irresponsible then.

Garth:
What you say is simply wrong.
The chances of one or other of these little children waking up and getting into some sort of trouble (not to mention being terribly frightened and lonely) was immense.
They were SO small.
And even if the twins were reliable sleepers, Madeleine - as we know from star chart details etc - was not.
People like you will say: “Oh, do people check their sleeping children every half an hour at home? I don’t think so.”
But these children were in a holiday apartment, with all the unfamiliarity which so often bothers kids.
The floors were tiled.
They could have wandered into kitchen or bathroom, opened who knows what cupboard doors, climbed up furniture, turned on taps, slipped, hurt themselves, got hold of knoves, played with electrical sockets…
Anyone who looked at three children of the ages those 3 were, would simply think: “Leave then alone? Even for half an hour at a time? Are you mad?”
