McGuckin In McCann Peril: Foreign Crimes In Foreign Climes
BRITONS planning trips to the new Portugal should go equipped with a loud hailer, a private detective and nothing too shiny. If on a driving holiday, ensure the boot can be opened from within.
Listen to the tale told by Eamon and Antionette McGuckin, who found their three children in the care of the Portuguese – and what irony there, readers – after they were attacked by a “Rohypnol gang”.
One would imagine that given the paralysing powers of the so-called date rape drug, the Rohypnol Gang are not much cop at ganging, preferring to lie down and wait their victim to trip over them. It would help if the victims were drunk.
But this gang is armed with the drug and slipping it into the “small jug” of sangria the McGuckins were quaffing, sipping, even. (Although the Mirror’s Sue Carroll sees the “dog tired, hot and thirsty” couple taking beer – mucky foreign beer.)
Says a friend of the family, namely a Dr Cyril Harkin: “Neither of them are big drinkers. They have tried to understand what happened and have linked the sangria with the sudden decline in their health. They believe they were drugged by someone trying to rob them.”
The GP puts the tin lid on the matter by saying: “The Portuguese authorities are paranoid after the Madeleine McCann case.”
We are not anti-foreigner, and are quite confident that if the entire peoples of continental Europe were placed in a cell we could find a dozen for a game of cricket and a scorer, but can only conclude that the vast mojortity Portuguese are the scum of the Earth and in need of hanging…

Is that Gerry McCann holding the head of Rebelo in your caption for the thread?
Can’t be can it, that man is bloodied in St George’s Cross? If it was Gerry the blood would have to be shaped in the Saltire Cross St. Andrew, or even the “Rampant Lion” (so can’t be Kate the Tigress) .

Ferdinand - when someone is brought to hospital in a state of collapse, it is the job of the medical team to ascertain the cause of the collapse. The smell of alcohol on a patient should never be ignored, but it should always be remembered that alcohol is possibly not the cause of the collapse. Other investigations to rule out a possible cardiac or cerebral event should be be carried out. Blood tests to rule out an electrolyte imbalance or massive internal blood loss would be performed. Blood and urine analysis for toxicology would also be performed.
At the end of these tests, it should be possible to give a diagnosis as to why a person collapsed and to commence with the appropriate treatment.
As the McG’s were due to meet with the judge the following morning, I think we can safely rule out a medical event which was not related to alcohol.

The fact that the McGs are reported as having discharged themselves from hospital is also suggestive…

Wise move, that one.
And at some point someone will enquire just how Mr McG could take Rohypnol but still be able to call for medical help, as per the latest retrofitting…

“Ferdinand, if you really believe that passing out after drinking alacohol is nothing to worry about then you need to go and talk to a professional about it.”
I am not worried at all about the McGuckins. If I were, it would be more a reason for me to consult professional help.
” Mrs McG was extremely fortunate that the hotel staff were there to prevent her choking to death on her own vomit. ”
According to other reports, it was Mr. McG. who himself asked the hotel staff for medical help. Now what should I believe? Or better put, why should I care at all?
——————————————–
The first detailed reports were taken from the original Press Association story by Joe Sinclair; I cited it here yesterday.
He’s quoting the hotel manager as the source:
After going out for dinner at about 8pm, they returned to the hotel two hours later where the father passed out on the sofa in reception and could not be woken up.
The hotel’s manager said Mrs McGuckin was struggling with the pushchair.
He said: “We put her and the children inside the bar. She was sitting on a chair and fell asleep and never woke up.
“We tried to wake her, we tried to put some water on her face and head but she was very, very bad. She started to be sick every minute.”
Of course, if Mr McG had really been drugged with Rohypnol as he now claims, he would not have been in a fit state to call for medical help, would he?
And he was obviously in no fit state to help his wife, since otherwise she would not have had to rely on the hotel staff doing it for her.
As for why you should care, you have been expressing concern about the impact of this on their children…

There IS NO reliable quote!

Ferdinand - I guess we will know how drunk they really were if they choose to reveal their blood tests taken at the hospital.
Of course, their will be the conspiracy theorists who will say that the blood results were faked just like Henri Paul’s in case they show a sky rocketed blood alcohol level.

QUOTE
“Soon they felt sick and groggy and went back to the hotel room, where Antoinette fainted.
“Eamon called the management to say he needed to get his wife to hospital and needed someone to look after their children. The manager called for an ambulance but when it arrived the police were with them.

You can expect , mostly, drinking privacy if drinking in private.
But public drinking, is by it’s nature, public.

Ferdinand - Three beers and a jug of sangria is a fair amount to drink, especially if one is not used to drinking such quantities.
This story made the news because of the similarities to the McCanns, in that they got drunk whilst supposedly looking after their children. Newspaper editors will use stories which sell papers. In this case it worked. Just look at the news websites and the number of comments which follow this story. The editors made a good call. If the McCann case had not happened, I doubt this story would have had such coverage.
Unfortunately, morals don’t come into it when selling news, but money does.
Personally, I feel very sorry for the children in this case and their loss of privacy, as I sense you do too.

Brandon…. I too have vibes about this. Something isn’t quite right.
To my shame I have also been through the ’steps to inebriation’ you mentioned and instant coma is weird.
Its never happened to me and I had many years of practice before I learnt that moderation in all things is good!! But thats an age thing!
The hospital must have taken blood samples, maybe that will explain it all. Alcohol levels etc.
