Madeleine McCann: McCanns Cleared, Shannon Matthews Fund And The Maddy Card
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann and Shannon Matthews
DAILY MIRROR: “McCANNS ‘IN CLEAR’”
Kate and Gerry McCann will be formally cleared as suspects in daughter Madeleine’s disappearance by August, their lawyer said yesterday.
Fact. Now the Portuguese police can find Madeleine? And the McCanns can return to Portugal.
Rogerio Alves said detectives in Portugal had finally admitted they have no evidence against the couple and were preparing to lift their arguido status. But he also warned the move could signal the end of the year-long hunt for the four-year-old.
But the Portuguese police are useless, right? And the McCanns have Metodo 3?
But McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “We don’t want the case to remain unsolved.”
DAILY MAIL: “McCanns’ status as suspects in Madeleine’s disappearance ‘will be lifted by August’”
This August. Fact.
Says Rogerio Alves: “I believe that by August the police will close the case and lift arguido status. I believe it is a very strong possibility.”
Believe. Possibility. Fact.
ROUNDTOWNNEWS (Spain): “Mass of Balloons for Madeleine”
Skies over the Costa Blanca were clouded by a mass of colour, to mark the first anniversary of the disappearance of British infant, Madeleine McCann…
Yellow…
Meanwhile, Rob and Lisa, owners of ‘The Card Place’ in Benimar, decided to make their own touching dedication to Madeleine, by launching an abundance of bright balloons into the sunny Costa Blanca sky… Last weekend, crowds gathered to witness the event, as 160 balloons sailed from outside of the store, reminding residents throughout the area that the search for a little girl must continue. Lisa concluded with an emotional message which reflected the thoughts of all of those with any knowledge of the case. She said, “Although the investigation has gone on for sometime, Madeline has yet to be found. Members of the public should be encouraged to continue to look for Madeleine, and remain conscientious in the protection of their own children.”
And get all their cards at The Card Palce, ask for it by name. Is there a missing child card?
DEWSBURY REPORTER: “Trustees meet over Shannon cash fund options”
RESIDENTS of the housing estate where Shannon Matthews disappeared are to choose how cash raised for her appeal will be spent.
A plasma telly?
This week the six trustees for the Help Find Shannon Fund and local community support group Pathfinder, which managed the collection of the money, met to decide what to do with the remaining cash.
Family, friends, neighbours, local businesses and community groups donated money into the Help Find Shannon Fund – much like the one for missing youngster Madeleine McCann – during the 24 days the nine-year-old was missing.
So give the money to the Find Madeleine fund, easy?

I can see that must be puzzling. It reminds me of the infamous headline involving the escape from an asylum of a gentleman who paused only to assault a nurse:

Maddie: parents would be happy if the trial is archived
Clarence Mitchell, responsible for communication which represents Kate and Gerry McCann, was congratulée yesterday about a possible opportunity that the Portuguese authorities decided to archive the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine.
The former head of the Unit for Media Monitoring of the British government, with whom he maintained close relations in the file McCann, spoke yesterday in Dublin during the annual conference of the Public Relations Institute of Ireland (PRII ) Or he was the main speaker.
“If they will archive the case, then, in a sense this would be welcome, because it would mean that Kate and Gerry would be eliminated from the investigation,” said Clarence Mitchell.
The new statements by Clarence Mitchell were greeted with surprise in Portugal because, according to a source of the Public Ministry, “there is no intention of the Portuguese authorities to abandon the investigation. Let us not forget that the primary objective of the work the police is to find Madeleine, is she the victim. ”
According to Clarence Mitchell, the McCann family considers the resignation of Alipio Ribeiro of the PJ and his comments about the survey as a sign of the disappearance of Madeleine will never be solved. The spokesman also appealed to the authorities in charge of the survey asking them to “restore their case to private investigators.”
As a reminder, the Judicial Police, Portugal, and Leicestershire Police, the United Kingdom, are responsible for investigations in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Several other police forces, particularly in Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Morocco, not to mention Interpol, have been linked to the investigation.
“This is unsustainable. They should provide information on their files to our private investigators so they can continue to find Madeleine,” said Clarence Mitchell.
The agency Barcelona, Metodo 3, after more than six months of investigations, been undermined by public statements by its director, Francisco Marco, who had promised the return of Madeleine “in time for the feast of Christmas” 2007. The arrest of one of the detectives, accused of stealing hundreds of kilos of cocaine, among other charges, and the revelation that there would have been paid witnesses in Morocco, have disparaged even more image Metodo 3.

Smuddlet will be 12 on Monday. My fascination with the MM case began when it was announced that 3 infants had been left alone in an apartment. I still find this the most astonishing aspect of the case. I just wish Madeleine was in a position to have a lovely birthday like my girl is.

Ah. Yes. That avelanche cupboard doesn’t burst its doors on its own, does it? I must go and shove in a bit more unironed laundry.
I have come to the conclusion that as a family we suffer from that little-known condition, Messlexia; the mess is there, we just can’t register it.
As for Smuddlet’s birthday on Monday, I can’t see that another heap of far-flung possessions and ripped wrapping paper will actually make that much difference. My utility room is usually full of diesel-soaked overalls, mud-encrusted MotoX gear, chain saws, bits of tree, spilt guinea-pig food and sawdust, beard trimmings, a tin of something leaking, size 12 boots which have recently trodden in something unpleasant, and, for some reason, dozens and dozens of screws. And ants.

Sorry to disappoint some of you, but the arguido status is not lifted unless there is irrefutable evidence that the person is not involved, and so far they are clearly the only suspects with much incriminatory evidence than anybody else.
The August deadline has to do with the timing of the investigation and secret of justice, this is, it is necessary to file the case and to take the decision if it advances to the next phase - instruction (optional) and /or trial – or not. If there is not enough evidence for trial, there is the possibility that the judge demands for a further short period of investigation or it remains filed until the new facts are uncovered.
Whatever happens they will not cease to be arguidos until the case is solved (Our Lady of Fatima can produce a miracle, maybe that’s why they asked people to pray) or shelved because of prescription, which in these cases can extend for 20 years.
They must know this, and all this spin talk is just to disguise their lack of co-operation with the investigation - most witnesses have responded favourably to participate in the reconstitution in Portugal, except those that are systematically demanding to know about their daughter’s fate.
May 10th, 2008 at 11:49 am
i’m now catching up on jonna morias blog,
considering these paragraphs it seems very reasonable to me to ask the mccans to participate in the reconstruction,
‘Amongst the witnesses the police hope to see return to P d L, there is a German tourist who has stated to the investigators that she saw Kate McCann return to the apartment during the dinner, well before the time Madeleine’s mother raised the alarm. Her sighting has been corroborated by a second witness, an Ocean Club employee.
These sightings can help to reconstruct the movements of each element of the group of friends, the Tapas 9, but on their own do not explain the indications that the special British police team found together with the PJ inspectors.’

We would have to know what Maria, and her friends, define as ‘criminal involvement’ before we can have any hope of knowing what they are saying…

IMO the Mcs’ Portuguese lawyer ought not , perhaps, to be saying anything at all publicly, even if he thinks he has definite knowledge of what is going to happen. If it is still only his “belief” that the arguido status will be lifted, he DEFINITELY should not be saying anything. IMO.
However, one can only hope that, in natural justice, if there is no evidence against them, what he is saying is true. Similarly Murat, of course. If that happens, I wish him luck with his libel suits.
(Is there a difference between the status being formally lifted or simply not being extended beyond its “normal” period of time? The lawyer seems to have said “lifted”. I know nothing about the procedures under Portuguese law.)
Contrary to what some people have said, the Mcs have always said they were keen to have the files opened. They don’t ever seem to have been scared about that happening! Quite the reverse.
Their focus seems to be only on finding out what happened to Madeleine, as, IMO, it always has been. My impression is that they want the arguido status lifted/dropped (!) mainly because that will facilitate the search by allowing them to see what progress has been made in the investigation into what happened to their daughter. I don’t think they’ve ever been worried about evidence against them. That could possibly because they know there can’t be any?! Just my impression.
It’s irrelevant to the truth, but I have still never met anyone “in real life” , as opposed to blog sites, who thought they were guilty of criminal involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance, although I know several who are critical of, or puzzled by, their decision to leave the children asleep out of ear shot while they ate with their friends. I know others who admit to having done exactly the same themselves when on holiday, or using baby-listening services etc.
BTW, the other “Maria” who posted yesterday, apparently from the USA, according to Duncan R, was obviously not me! I think some of the things she said have been pulled anyway?
I’m sure our thoughts will be with the wider family on Monday (I think?) which is, or would have been, Madaleine’s fifth birthday.

Murat’s libel claim has gone very quiet, wonder why, or perhaps I don’t.
———————————-
It’s intended to be quiet; you no doubt recall:
‘Simons Muirhead & Burton is launching one of Britain’s largest libel claims on behalf of Robert Murat, the man named by Portugese police as a formal suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
The firm, in a statement, confirmed it was representing Murat in respect to libel actions against 11 newspapers and one television channel. The firm declined to comment any further.’
