Madeleine McCann: Blaming Richard Desmond And How To Prevent Another Maddie
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
THE GUARDIAN: “Why the Sunday Express is so unpopular”
ROY GREENSLADE:
I note that the Sunday Express took another sales nose dive last month to record an average weekly sale of just 673,840. Could the continuing circulation slide have anything to do with the readers’ dislike of its scandalous Madeleine McCann coverage? Possibly.
Or has it more to do with the whimsical, but pointless, columns by the paper’s editor, Martin Townsend ? Also possible.
But I believe it has more to do with the growing distaste for its owner, Richard Desmond. In true Maxwellian form a sweaty picture of Dirty Des appeared in this week’s issue (arm around Lulu, poor her) at a charity function arranged by, of course, Desmond himself. Expect another sales drop this month.
OK!, which routinely features its owner Desmond, is the top selling showbiz magazine. Go figure…
METRO: “McCanns hold ‘low-key Maddie birthday party’”
Mr McCann, a consultant cardiologist at Leicester’s Glenfield Hospital, has a number of clinical appointments but he and his wife were due to be together at home for some part of the day.
Such are the facts.
IRISH INDEPENDENT: “7 ways to keep your kids safe on holiday - It’s easy for parents to become too relaxed about their children while abroad, so Shane Dunphy suggests some general rules”
Summer’s here — at last. And all we can think about are holidays in the sun. But no parent can take their children abroad now without thinking of tragic Madeleine McCann.
Tips to avoid another Madeleine McCann include:

That would depend on who opened the shutters, would it not?
Who should have opened them, other than the abductor, and why?

One obvious possibility would be someone who wished to convey the impression that another individual had entered, or exited from, the apartment that way…

-could she have seen her parents open the shutters and looked out to see where they were or are these external shutters-sorry playing catch-up here.
Could Oldfield have done his ‘check’ by looking through the shutters rather than glancing in the appartment.
Where is Miss marple when you need her?

Carmen-excuse my ignorance-so did the Mccanns etc have a key to get in and out of the walled area
****************************
I never saw anyone using a key, there was always someone on reception. Staff are relatively cheap in Portugal, wages are low, so I would imagine it is more cost effective than constantly checking on keys for all the flats. Besides there has to be staff for the Tapas Bar, its not ’serve yourself’. The whole area is relatively small, not some expansive leisure complex. I doubt that the Tapas Bar could contain more than 15 or so people if it wasn’t warm enough to sit outside and round the pool area. The photographs make it look a lot nicer and more expansive than it is - but then that’s holiday brochures for you!

I’ve been to the Algarve in late April -it is dark ish about 8.45 - how foolish to leave them alone . Imagine the fear of a child to wake up in a strange environment and find that your parents are not there.!
May 12th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
197-yes, I have just been to places that are ’secure’ and been amazed how easy it is to get in-people normally hold the gate open for you. That or I could easily climb over it.

Ferdinand.
I don’t know, I wasn’t there on April 29th last year - but then neither were you.
I deduce that it must have been though, otherwise they wouldn’t have been able to get in to go to the Tapas Bar.
Maybe you are right, maybe it wasn’t manned, and they weren’t there!

De nada
I know the PJ is up to its job.I also hope the PJ will make justice to Madeleine….otherwise,I have a nagging feeling portuguese will NOT accept a different outcome to this case which is costing a fortune to the portuguese govt and will manifest their displeasure. They will strongly protest and challenge the PJ IF the case is shelved ,which I seriously doubt.

may be the PJ has it? like the cuddle cat and many other things and evidence we havent even started to dream of…..

Actually, just thought of the idea to put a body in a buggy, cover the face from the sun and walk around it the whole day. Noone would have the idea that it is a body in it, rather a sleeping child

MW might be concerned if their nocturnal visitors turned out to be abductors, yobs, revellers, and scroungers. In May it is light until at least 9pm so people would be still using the facilities. And don’t forget health and safety leglisation would mean MW would be legally liable for any mishaps in the pool and other facilities.
Ferdinand is getting too much into the probablies when he needs more facts to back up his speculations.
Bye now

It”s the Burmese she should be more angry with, Government that is, not the people.
Do you remember a while ago I found a CBS News investigation on the McCanns,
parts 1 to 3? Well parts 1 and 2 are on youtbube and make interesting viewing. How
can Gerry make such a stupid remark, referring to the Abduction, “I wish I had been
there”……like no abduction Gerry if you”d been there!!!!!
Is there going to be a reconstruction for definite?

How do you imagine that an intruder could get into the apartment in the first place?

” If it was just a gate how would MW prevent any old Matt, Russ, Dave or Gerry using the MW facilities freely. It’s a commercial concern after all not a community freebie - and the appartments were outside the MW complex as far as I know. I think you know too but ask Carmen if s/he comes in. It is after all not a matter of secrecy. ”
Maybe there’s some staff during daylight hours, but in the evening and especially off-season it probably doesn’t pay to employ a nighttime warden at the tapas gate.
*********************************
You may be right about the lack of warden off season Ferdinand, but if there was no warden, you wouldn’t be able to get into the swimming pool and tapas bar area. The wall round it is too high to climb over, and the gate house, rather than just ‘gate’ is a good 15 foot high. It is certainly manned at night from April 29th onwards. It may well be manned before that, I don’t know. The apartments are definitely outside this area.
