Be fair, Ade, bad enough having to play Tanner without turning the poor chap into a eunuch.
However, there is one way in which the McCanns could be forced to give evidence in England, even if it incriminated them.
That would be under care proceedings for the twins.
Under the decision of the Court of Appeal in Re Y and K (Split Hearing: Evidence) [2003] EWCA Civ 669, [2003] 2 FLR 273, the parents would be compellable witnesses, with no right to refuse to give evidence, and by virtue of section 98(1) of the Children Act 1989 they could not even refuse to answer questions which might incriminate them.
Perhaps Portugual should consider bringing those provisions in…

On the contrary JT”s sighting proved laughable and the fact that she was in the Police Station for 12 hours is significant. Oldfield was supposedly the one asked to check on
the McCann children about 9.30pm but says he saw the twins from just inside the
doorway, but didn”t see Madeleine because she would have been in a bed behind the Door. Webster has kept a very low profile and as she never had any children of her
own to check on would justifiably think a recon a waste of time as far as she was
concerned.

Maybe in your opinion but im sure the McCanns know for a fact that a reconstruction will do absolutely nothing to aid the search for Maddie. All it will do is make the PJ appear to those who are ’suckered’ in (mentioning no names) that they are trying to establish what went on that night. They have had the tapas 9 reinterviewed and noone has change their initial statement.
So whats the problem with them?

I think it was a forlorn hope by the PJ, they knew JT and O”B were suspect. If you
remember JT and O”B were interviewed first. JT went in all chirpy at 9am and came out looking shattered at 9pm!!!!!!!! Apparently O”B has been off sick for yonks.
Once again the McCanns are off the hook, but for how long. Maybe the PJ were trying
to avoid a warrant by arresting them as soon as they set foot in Portugal, who knows.?
It may now lead to a Neglect charge, or complete closure of the case, I wouldn”t like
to hazard a guess at this stage.

Tanner would be the one least to expect, at least she has seen something she deems important. But what about the likes of Webster, R. Oldfield etc. who allegedly never left the table that night? They would have every reason to question the usefuless of their presence.

I think it’s not so much spineless as gutless, although now I come to think of it, perhaps heartless would be a better word.
After all, they profess to believe that Madeleine was kidnapped and yet they are not willing to spend a couple of days in Portugual assisting the investigation into a crime which they say was committed.
A three year old child has been missing for over a year and yet they are too busy to spare the time…
