Madeleine McCann: Jasper Gerard - What I Did On My Holidays
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
PRIVATE Eye reports that Telegraph columnist Jasper Gerard – a sometime sports writer who surely needs billing as ‘Jaspie G’ - marked the first anniversary of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance by travelling to Portugal with his wife and two children.
He also, allegedly, took along a security guard for baby minding duties.
Sadly, the reported investigation was never published, it being said to be too revolting for the paper’s Travel Editor, although it may yet appear in the main news section…
Mr Gerard has not replied to the rumour…

From The Times of yesterday:
“However, details of the investigation have emerged in a court judgment, seen by The Times, after prosecutor Magalhães e Meneses was refused access to the content of the group’s telephone messages.
He had requested a “complete listings of all telephone traffic to calls made to and from” numbers between April 28, when the group arrived in Portugal, and September 9, when the McCanns left the country. He also sought details of the locations of the mobile telephones which would allow detectives to recreat the movement of the group.
“The request for access to the messages was rejected by instructional judge Pedro Frias at the court in Portimão. He said it would breach the right to privacy and that Portuguese law did not allow for the retrospective interception of telephone calls.
“The Évora Supreme Court of Justice has now rejected the prosecutor’s appeal and published its reasons, giving the first glimpse into the investigation. “/end quote

Cool and Calm:
The difference with the Ben Needham case is that his mother was not generally thought to have killed him and disposed of his body, after pretending he’d been adbducted by a paedophile.
People were genuinely sorry for her, and although the boy’s disappearance was, and is, a mystery, no-one thought she had set the wholething up.
As you see, that is very different from the public view of the McCanns.
They will never be allowed back into obscurity, while the cloud of suspicion remains.

Rasputin - I’m glad that you think the Pink one is a better spinner than the PJ. His job is to spin and the PJ’s role is to investigate. How successful each of them are at their jobs only time will tell.
I doubt it that anyone today finds the McCanns and their abduction theory any more credible than they did 12 Months ago. So if that’s effective spin… long may it last.
The PJ on the other hand seems to be working towards one clear goal and that is to find out what happened to Madeleine. In my personal opinion the PJ want to achieve justice and CM wants to obstruct it. In my humble opinion this is not a football match where one can celebrate victory of Team McCann over the Portuguese Judiciary or vice versa. Sometimes people seem to lose sight that this is about finding out what happened to Madeleine and IMO there’s only one side interested in seeing that happen, and that’s the police.
Some references to the ECHR by many posters have puzzled me in that they are not based in any logical legal reasoning. Some posters may be confused about the possible recourse to the ECHR and the effect that this would have in a ruling like this. I think you allude to arguido status being contrary to Art 6 of the convention. Even if that were to be the case (which we could discuss for many hours) you may want to check how that would have effect (or even deem void) eventual charges or criminal convictions in the Madeleine McCann case. Perhaps you’ll be surprised.
I told many honourable posters before… Michael Caplan QC - who I’m sure is a very skilled and competent fellow - means very little in the courts of Portugal. Trust me - i’m not a doctor

Is that because I refuse to accept your blog as a legitimate point of reference?
However…….. I can in fact read and understand German French and Spanish although I’m not an expert in any of course and as I work in the industry I keep up to date with what is going on in the media pretty much everywhere and the story is fading across the world and will continue to do so unless something relevant happens.
When there are floods, famine and earthquakes going on in the world, not to mention man’s inhumanity to man in Africa especially, then one missing child is never going to stay in the headlines.
As I also said… look to Ben Needham.

With regards to neglect, is there any more information about whether the McC’s went further a field of a night time, have the PJ any proof yet whether they went to Chaplins?
If so, surely this constitutes total neglect

All the more reason for the PJ to issue warrants or request them, if they do indeed have any evidence to support the request for warrants, as it stands it doesn’t look like they have anything that would support the granting of any warrant.

“Spaniens Allgemeine Zeitung 28/05/08″
‘Maddie: McCanns blow reconstruction of the case!
PRAIA DA LUZ:
That’s just about the limit in the case Maddie: The planned reconstruction of the alleged abduction in Praia da Luz has been cancelled.
Reason: The McCanns and their friends suddenly aren’t willingly any more.
Actually, the McCanns and their friends - Seven called tapas - on Thursday in the Algarve in Portugal, with the aim of the police to tell exactly how the disappearance Maddies on the evening of the 3rd May 2007 has played.
A friend of the family now betrayed the Daily Mail that some of the McCann friends apparently got cold feet. One year after the incidents, they are probably no longer sure what they had seen before. Incomplete but do not make sense to travel to Portugal, said the official version of the McCanns.
After the rejection, they are hardly appear more credible in Portugal …
Of course there are speculations immediately about what the McCanns fear? What do they have to hide? Is it really the friends? Or is it all about money only?
So far, all parties had always claimed that they would “do everything so that Maddie found again.” Even before week welcomed the McCanns and their friends the possibility of reconstruction. Now says: “What does this once a year?”
The McCanns had last called the police should send the spectacle of reconstruction broadcast live on television, in order to attract media attention.
Possible Background: The Fund for the search for Maddie might draw to a close and the McCanns are looking for new cash injections.
Kate and Gerry McCann are still officially suspect. The police believes that Kate and Gerry are involved at the disappearance of their daughter, also in the long and Spain by a Spanish detective sought, are involved. After the cancelled reconstruction of the case, they appear even less credible to the authorities in Portugal …

A child is indeed missing, it appears that the powers that be, seem to be concentrating on everything else, except the missing child.
Perhaps if the PJ were to request EAW’s, their credibility would rise, as it is all they appear to be are ditherers, at the expense of the missing child, Madeleine.
the only thing making them dither is the fact the Mccanns won’t operate.

In Austria noone cares about Madeleine Mccann anymore. I have not read anything in the news anymore since months. So she could happily live here and noone would notice. In a cellar maybe?

………………….
From what I can tell the reportage from the rest of the world is virtually nil. Same as it it in UK really.
The story still gets the odd paragraph or two but on the whole its over with regard to the press and will continue to be over unless someone is charged or Madeleine is found, alive or dead.
IMO it will quietly slip away, the McCanns will carry on with their lives in England, Robert Murat will start his new business in Portugal, Clarence M will go back to his job with Kennedy and the PJ will move onto the next big case.
The rest of the group will also go about their lives.
Remember Ben Needham. A very similar case with no resolution 16 years down the line. The Greek police still suspect the uncle of accidentally killing him and disposing of his body, the mother still thinks he’s alive and ‘adopted’ and follows up leads pointing to his whereabouts.
Everyone moved on with their lives. There is no choice really.
And I keep mentioning him because I can’t imagine spending all those years not knowing. 16 years. The stuff of nightmares.

May 29th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
In what way is the investigation ongoing that is the puzzle, is it ongoing in the sense that they are preparing to shelve it, is it ongoing so that EAW’s can be sought, these warrants take as long as the Letters of Mutual Assistance to process.
Mods and Admin
Time will tell.
