Mods and Admin

Angie you take a point that Paul didn't even point out.
Sexuality really does not belong in this thread, and is the sole private business of the poster.
We are discussing different views on service to country, and even for Anorak I am going to insist people stay on topic.

Oh yes Paul ,on another point just coming out shows courage as I had a friend who was very nearly killed by homophobes. They have fought a war of their own and Rupert does not lack courage just because he drawn to acting and not fighting.

it may be better not to confuse the issue, I'll look at the thread properly, peoples sexuality and defence of country are two entirely seperate issues.

June , bit busy today so I only just read your comment. As I say we won'ytget a chance to roll over next time. I do think that it's over machismo that makes a lot of boys join up ..just think if none of then in ANY country joined up then wars might be a thing of the past. A lot depends on the war , The First W.W was just an Imperialist fight but even I would have hoped I'd have had the courage to do my bit fighting fascism in WW2. The Falklands was another Imperialist war I don't appove of. Rupert can be hard to understand but I truly believe he has a heart and above all intelligence . We must have all made stupid remarks , sadly he has a public platform.

M and A

replying as June though

The Falkland Islanders didn't want to be Argentine, do they NOT have a voice before Rupert Everitt, or is he some new pundit who must be obeyed?
Ok all these young lads who sign up, to be honest I have more respect for them than for Rupert Everitt, over paid actors do tend to stick their opinions in anywhere, at least these lads do try to honour their countrymen, and at a lot less financial cost, and at far greater personal risk.

I do understand that Conscientious Objectors and Pacifists are entitled to their say, but court the politicians of opposing sides. There really is no benefit to a nation to disarm, but great benefit to an attacker of that nation.

Now that Rupert Everitt has left his soap box, lets hear it for an ablebodied soldier, who may not appreciate being called a wimp.

BTW the only moderating on this thread will be for ad hominem attacks, not for honestly held views

Rupert,

Do you need some Preparation H to get you back in a better mood? Yeah, I agree the war is unjust...however seeing hollwood and movie stars spout off about the military makes them pretenders in the real world like such as you....you are still a little boy who hasn't become a grown man yet.....LOL

Rupert must now realize that we live in a very different age than the late 19th and early 20th century of his (and mine) ancestors. It is wrong and very cheap to attack our brave service men and women- I personally do not agree with New Labour's foreign policies HOWEVER I will always support 100 per cent our brave boys and girls - they are doing a fine job whilst often facing public backlash (such as Rupert's). Try telling a young man who has lost both his legs and arms whilst serving his country (often for a war he does not agree in) that he is a 'whining wimp' - I find this highly offensive! Like Rupert I am gay - however I suspect that my life is rather more complete and
fulfilled than his - because I do not need to make cheap insults (against the brave) to get my forgotten name into the headlines and attempt to re-light my fading star. Rupert your acting like a very sad queen.

Tad surprised? how about shock and grief.

When does the decision to be a pacifist kick in ? Before or after the event?

I honestly can't see the link betweeen sexuality and defending one's country

Well June , I almost hate to mention it but let's put it this way anyone who attacks is probably gonna nuke us all so a rifle won't be a big help ! Do not think I never think "Oh shut up Rupert for goodness sake" . I do but I also think he has a unique perspective and let's face it how many soldier's families seemed a tad surprised when they got killed ? We have been in enough wars of late that were old imperialist non-sense for me to think " darn that for a game of soldiers" . I am in fact not at all happy that many of Rupert's old relatives were Empire builders and exploiters. We all need to hear opposing views sometimes and ..maybe he could explain himself a bit better . I am beginning to think the spliffs have got to the old brain a bit mind you . It must be very hard being gay but he isn't making it any easier . I do think both our and American popular culture is "Blobby" in fact it's melted.

People joined the armed forces well before the Iraq debacle, and that was solely vainglorious politicians aping Statesmen.

So if someone attacks this country, what then? who defends it?

Sorry Rupert is right .Anyone stupid enough to join the armed services does it because they like the machismo . In the last few years Britain has been in enough wars to assure you'll be in one. My uncle died an honourable death fighting fascism but why are we even involved in Iraq ? As for his sexuality if I had a son 100x I'd rather he was gay /transsexual than a soldier. I could love my child whoever he loved ( except murderers maybe). England has a very trashy culture too and I think he knows that too , I don't take offence I agree .

OOh Ampleforth Army cadets eh? well have no problem with Ampleforth or the Army cadets, but joining the armed forces is actually about serving ones country, and defending it. Sometimes dying an honourable death.
