Madeleine McCann: Irvine Welsh, French T-Shirts And A Halo
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
SUNDAY HERALD: “I don’t believe we get rewarded or punished, but I believe we have a responsibility to try to get the best out of life and make it comfortable for other people”
IRVINE WELSH arrives at the Irish Film Institute in Dublin carrying a holdall in two-tone, light beige leather; it gives the impression that he has just walked in from a picnic. Natural atrium light swamps his head and in a flash he’s almost on top of me, swapping his bag from one set of fingers to another and shaking my hand. His face contorts: he is an hour and a bit late and he’s sorry.
A halo?
Welsh’s jacket is reversible yellow. His T-shirt, in French, says “What would you do if this was the end of the world?” Well? “I don’t know,” he says, apparently uninspired by the question he is advertising.
Well, he could plug his new book: Crime:
“It’s the most difficult thing to write about,” says Welsh. “Child sex abuse tests the limits of our liberalism to the full. You have the whole idea of whether rehabilitation is possible or even desirable.” He was about halfway through the first draft when the Madeleine McCann story broke and forced him to stop writing for two months. “I couldn’t look at the novel or at the newspapers,” he says. “I thought I was never going to finish the book.”
Fact and fiction - can you spot the difference?

Lawener, in your opinion - do you think there was an abductor? If so, how do you think said abductor managed to collect Madeleine from the apartment without being seen?

Yes….a bit of a howler that.
Can’t imagine him biting the hand that, presently, feeds him.
So….it must have been just a howler on his part.

Matt - Very curious statement from John McCann conveniently forgetting that the official Madeleine find fund is a business not a charity

Of course it is family first - public interest would dictate that, conserving funds and all that - my point to Lawener was that if a court decide it is in the child’s best interests not to be with family, then aunty Phil saying it would be ‘over her dead body’ would have no effect.
What in your experience would be the legal position if say, bloody tests, or physical interviews were required with the twins? Would Social Services have been happy to see WOC proceedings for all three children and thus let the court decide, rather than stand in the middle of endless requests via Leicester Police trying to carry out rogatory requests?
I’m just wondering whether Clarrie’s warblings are as reliable as usual, and that this is actually a request from Leicester Police to the High Court to carry out rogatory requests rather than the other way round? All we know is that Hogg has set aside July 7th - we haven’t actually seen the court lists yet to know which way the petition lies.
June 23rd, 2008 at 5:08 pm
BF (I think it was you.. I’ve been out and have flicked back) a parent can apply to have their child made a ward of court for any number of reasons and it need have nothing to do with Social Services. A ward of court is not necessarily a ‘ward’ in the physical sense….. it a legal protection not necessarily a physical protection.

Why so soon after her going missing then? Wouldnt they have been too busy turning over stones and physcially searching for her, than to worry about her/their legal status?

Carmen 138. Under the Children’s Act it’s always family first unless there is a very good reason not to leave children within the family circle. In the cas of the McCanns it would not happen.
I’ve seen children sent back to horrendous families because of it. Only when it breaks down can alternative measures be put in place.
The Childrens Act 89 has probably caused more problems than it ever solved.

Have you not ‘tried and acquitted’ them in your own mind, are you not advocating that they not even be charged and heard in a court of law, but ‘released’ before any charges are placed because you have decided in your own mind that there is no evidence?
……………………………………………………….
No. I think, when the evidence is in front of us the McCanns should be answerable for any wrong doing.
If the “only” thing they have done wrong is to leave the children alone and check on them every half an hour (IF they did) then surely all the baby listening services in the world should go on trial with them.

I do not send death threats to people.I would even not dream of it.If other do,this has nothing to do with me.
I personally doubt very much this new “story” or better said, spin.
Security has been reinforced around them.Which kind of security? at which ends?
It rings too many bells which sounds obviously you do not know or do not want to recognise
People UNlike you are trying to make the thruth and justice for a child who has gone and will never come back.

They would not carry on playing the victims and having fancy alarm device installed for their security, having recieved “death threats”.Why would innocent parents receive death threats?
…………………………………………………..
Why would innocent parents receive death threats? Because of people like you!!!! People who have tried and convicted them in their OWN minds to their OWN satisfaction and would like take them to the nearest tree and hang ‘em. People who don’t want to wait until all the evidence becomes available, because they KNOW who did it and want to take justice into their own hands. People like you but just a little bit more psychotic. But only a little.
*********************
And what, pray tell, of people like you, people who make sweeping generalisations that anybody wants to tie them to a tree and hang them, people who were invited to ‘look under any stone’ and help to figure out what happened to Madeleine - who now find themselves castigated because one of the stones they looked under was marked ‘did the parents have anything to do with it’?
Have you not ‘tried and acquitted’ them in your own mind, are you not advocating that they not even be charged and heard in a court of law, but ‘released’ before any charges are placed because you have decided in your own mind that there is no evidence?

They wouldn’t have to be worrying about SS, Police, Family Courts, Ward of Court
Orders, etc, if the parental neglect had not occurred in the first place.
Matt - this is where I agree with Gerry when he says this is “boring”. We’ve all gone over and over it. There is no right minded person who thinks leaving three toddlers on their own is right, but just how many times can we say that and how many times can the McCanns be asked that without it becoming boring. It IS boring. It happened.
**************************
‘It’s boring’, ‘It happened’, ‘If she’s dead, she’s dead’……….
Personally, I shan’t get bored until the time that the whole lot of them come out and openly say ‘It’s wrong’, ‘We shouldn’t have done it’, ‘Don’t be as daft as we were’, ‘Look after your children all the time’……….
Then I might get bored.
June 23rd, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Well, personally, I as a father would never become bored about questions
should my daughter be “missing”.
I might use the “boring” card if I was involved in her “disappearance” though,
and had neglected her on several occasions.

I was reading through (wading through might be better) the weekend posts and noticed a point about Madeleine being made a ward of court at some point.

I think Philomena was not aware that a Ward of Court Order had been
applied regarding Madeleine.
I think the Ward of Court Order was instigated, or imposed, after the flight
from Portugal.

Aunty Phil made those remarks when the ravening wolves (The Anti McCanns) were saying the children should be taken into care. Aunty Phil most probably meant “over the dead bodies of all the McCann and Healey relatives who would be happy to look after the children”.
************************
Aunty Phil can say what she likes, it is for the court to decide what is in the children’s best interests, and whether there are family willing to take care of them is something to be taken into account, not a deciding factor.
They could still be taken into care if the combined Healey/McCann family were willing and able to care for them.
