IRVINE WELSH arrives at the Irish Film Institute in Dublin carrying a holdall in two-tone, light beige leather; it gives the impression that he has just walked in from a picnic. Natural atrium light swamps his head and in a flash he’s almost on top of me, swapping his bag from one set of fingers to another and shaking my hand. His face contorts: he is an hour and a bit late and he’s sorry.
A halo?
Welsh’s jacket is reversible yellow. His T-shirt, in French, says “What would you do if this was the end of the world?” Well? “I don’t know,” he says, apparently uninspired by the question he is advertising.
Well, he could plug his new book: Crime:
“It’s the most difficult thing to write about,” says Welsh. “Child sex abuse tests the limits of our liberalism to the full. You have the whole idea of whether rehabilitation is possible or even desirable.” He was about halfway through the first draft when the Madeleine McCann story broke and forced him to stop writing for two months. “I couldn’t look at the novel or at the newspapers,” he says. “I thought I was never going to finish the book.”

Yes, we would have heard news-even now I do hope Maddie is alive and well with another family who can cope with her! Is this too much to ask for. But, deep down, worse thoughts come to mind and what do you think, we shall ever know?

loving the picture just_me- that’s my new fledgling. I’ve fostered the little monkey! Ain’t he adorable! I’ve got him on 3 botlles of milk and 5 bananas a day and he has 4 hours tree climbing along with some other activities every day. I make a smashing dad

Somedays I still have faith that there will one day, eventually be justice for Madeleine, but other days, when it’s day after day of nothing happening, I start to become afraid that she’s just going to remain another statistic. I suppose the word is patience? Something I have very little of!

hello Brandon! Yep I got me a shiny new laptop! Well it’s red actually! I also got me a wicked new mobile as I was due an upgrade! I got the samsung tocco - it’s totally wicked! The other pigeons are well jealous! I keep flashing it when their around
Can’t stay long - gotta paint the bedroom today and get prepared for tiling the walls in the en suite. Then i’ve gotta get the hallway ready for the new wooden floor. I dunno, a pigeons work is never done

yes that’s right - i’ve got my laptop in the shower! I wrapped in 4 layers of cling film. This way I can always get my fix of anorak - even when washing! How cool is that!
