in byegone days, you used to have to be a rufty tufty muscular type to work on the bins - these days, they can't lift anything, can't drag anything heavier than you can manage with 2 fingers, can't be arsed to put your bin back where it was - and all that if they bother to turn up in the first place.... the bins is for wimps and miserable bastards these days, it seems - I know where my 2 fingers are being directed...

I recall a Porgy and Bess parody done by Stanley Baxter years ago, featuring the song 'Summertime' with suitably altered lyrics:-

"Summertime, and the smell is disgusting.
Dustmen's strike, and the garbage is high..."

...or something like that.

That's probably the same eejit that was interviewed on radio5 last night.

When pressed about the fact that it wasn't exactly an overwhelming majority in favour , she replied that 'she knew...' what the feeling was amongst the membership.

Oh well, in that case...go ahead!

Bloody little tinpot dictators and bureaucrats, boosting their egos at the expense of the public...they're just wannabee politicians.

some representative was interviewed about this on TV this morning and she was insistent that 27% was in fact a very good turnout and very representative of her members....
I agree with Anorak - how DO you tell when the binmen are on strike these days?

Interesting stats on the radio yesterday about this proposed strike action:-

There was a 27% response on the ballot, with 555 of those in favour of taking action.

On the assumption that those who were concerned and committed enough to strike would have been bothered to vote, that leaves 14.85% of the union's membership voting in favour of strike action.

Looks like an overwhelming majority to me!!

Or, to put it in union parlance "a clear mandate from the membership".
