Boing Boing Kills Off Violet Blue
Boing Boing, the blog about stuff, has rid its archives of all the works of Violet Blue.
The reason for the disappearance is unclear; but whatever it is, it can’t fit in well with Boing Boing co-editor Cory Doctorow’s free speech crusading.
Why not? You can do as your please on your own organ - it’s what blogs are for. Violet Blue can have hers…

Sure, they can “do that on their own blog” but they have to accept that a certain amount of their readership will find that to be incompatible with other Boing Boing tenets, and will say so, and those reader’s view of Boing Boing will change.
Boing Boing has risen to the level of public awareness of being a “public figure” - a nebulous status, to be sure, but it has happened, whether they will it or no. Boing Boing has grown from being “just a blog” to being something like an online magazine. For other media, deleting archives are a big no-no.
I have more of an issue with the fact that they were deleting user comments on their blog when people were asking questions about it, in an attempt to contain the story and keep it from public view. They tried to cite TOS in the deletions, but people then posted the deleted comments elsewhere and it’s quite clear those deletions didn’t fall under TOS. It’s pretty clear the moderator just took it upon her self to editorialize the reader comments - that part really stinks to high heaven. It’s the cover-up that kills you, every time.
