Americans who go to other places and expect to be understood when speaking English are rightly regarded as boors and told to either learn the native language or accept the consequences of the limited capacity for communication. Most especially, they are told that the natives are under no obligation to speak or understand English for their benefit.

In fact, a century ago this principle was the rule in any nation. “We speak X. There are our values. Learn our language, adopt our values, or go home.”

Yet we see a certain segment of the political spectrum demanding that America be an exception to this rule in a manner that is not in its favor: Americans are being increasingly told that their values must give way to someone else’s values, for no reason other than to spare that other group the effort of adapting.
