MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY STAR: “MCCANNS’ OPRAH WINDFALL”
MADELEINE McCann’s parents are planning a big bucks interview with US chatshow queen Oprah Winfrey to boost their search fund.
They’ve cracked America. In yer face Barbara Walters.
It is understood Oprah, 54, would be willing to break the bank for a cosy chat with Kate and Gerry.
How the Star came to understand this is unsaid. But let’s look out for the “cosy chat” - the one performed before tens of millions of people. Who’s looking for the missing child? We’re watching the parents.

Cheryl
Hi. Thanks for the link last night. I haven’t read it yet (only found it earlier today), but will do so.
You talk about “over there”, by which I presume you mean the UK. But honestly Cheryl, it’s important not to take the Anorak view as representative of the general public’s view. I have still to meet anyone “in real life” who thinks the Mcs were directly guilty. I can’t claim to talk about it that much but I do get the general impression that most people think that making them suspects was an error of judgement. Naturally, some people wobbled in their certainty for a time last autumn, but with the apparently poor quality of the so-called “evidence”, the news about Amaral being charged with perjury in the case of alleged torture of another woman whose child went missing, the Christmas appeal, the documentary, their apparently sincere response to the missing children charities when they were asked to support the campaign for a Europe-wide child rescue alert, the press pay-outs for alleged libel, then recently, the leaks about the possibility of the investigation being dropped, the judge’s support, and , most of all, and from the start, their unwavering commitment to searching for the truth about what happened to Madeleine, the public’s original belief in their innocence has largely been confirmed or restored.
At least, that’s my impression. I don’t think people are that different here or in the USA and despite some awful stuff thrown their way, the Mcs are probably generally thought to be innocent by the majority. I agree that criticism of the judge for her sympathetic words is difficult to comprehend. I don’t think it’s something different in the English psyche though!
Of course they should not have left the children, although thousands have done similarly, eg. all those who use the baby-listening service offered by many resorts. (I know it’s never an excuse that others do the same thing!) It is their tragedy, IF they are otherwise innocent, that they will probably have to live with that tragic misjudgement for the rest of their lives. It would be desperate enough to have had their child taken (if that really is what happened). To know that they could so easily have prevented it, as they should and could have done, must make it a million times worse.
I just wouldn’t want you to get the wrong impression about public opinion here in the UK!
We are still waiting for the Portuguese authorities’ next move, of course. We are sure of nothing yet. Most people may think they are innocent but the real truth about that fateful night has yet to be discovered.
Will go to that link now. Thanks again.

Such a charitable Saint is our Lady Justice Hogg, don’t you just want to send her a big bunch of roses, so concerned is she, that subject to availability she has reserved the case to herself, how very very thoughtful. She must be very well respected getting to pick her own cases, and very powerful in the stream of things, such a lovely and fair woman.

Cheryl and C and C
Good news that a majority of the EU MEPs have….finally!!…agreed that a more consistent cross-border response is needed when child goes missing, something akin to the Amber Alert system in the USA.
Missing People, PACT and Missing Children Europe (major charities concerned with missing people, abducted children etc.) have been campaigning for this for years but with limited success at European Parliament level.
They very sensibly asked the Mcs to lend their support, believing that it would carry some weight. It would appear they were correct and the Mcs’ visits to Brussels and Strasbourg were successful.
(Not that we should worry about the Mcs’ support. It’s irrelevant to the issue. They simply gave their support, even at the worst possible time in their lives, because they were persuaded it would help. The PACT spokesperson said during their Brussels visit that the Mcs’ support was proving crucial in pushing on the campaign, but the charities themselves have been working towards this for years.)
That’s why June Johnson and chenier don’t need to worry about this being a knee-jerk reaction. Does Europe do knee-jerks?! This is only the start. There’s along way to go before anything actually gets done. This is bureaucracy at its best! There will be plenty of time for the experts to design a system appropriate for use. Even then it may not get through to the stage of being law. However, I do think there is now a glimmer of hope. JJ and chenier can trust groups like Missing People, for example, to use their influence to get the details right. They are the experts (as chenier reminded us so often……….before s/he realised they supported Kate and Gerry’s declaration!) and should know what they are doing.
What the Mcs have successfully done is raise awareness among MEPs that this is an urgent issue worthy of their concern.
We can thank God (as Justice Hogg might do!) or whatever we choose to thank when things go well, that this step has been taken. We can thank the Mcs for lending their support. If they are innocent, I hope this will make them feel just a little better in their loss and grief.
________
Good afternoon, Maria, nice thoughts expressed by you on it. I had read it earlier today and figured no use putting it on here - just keeps the wolves baying at the McCann’s door (one can visualize the foam dripping from their mouths) and ridicule and downgrade the needs for a system somewhat like the Amber Alert.
Chenier is the self-proclaimed expert on the Amber System and what little use it is in finding missing children so I’m presuming she’ll be going to lecture to whatever Committee meets next to make certain it doesn’t pass.
I have to give credit to the McCanns for what they have done trying to bring awareness to a better system. They know the nauseating shit that is thrown their way and ridicule and put downs - but yet they’ve stood above that and kept on. No doubt in my mind, Maria, that one part of this is their guilt about leaving their child alone and if trying to help make the country safer for other children can help them cope with it then I say good luck to them . I have noted also, Maria, people who may not have been against a new system being tried are now against it just because the McCanns are striving for it. Strange how prejudging the McCanns can twist a person’s mind to be willing to let just maybe one child be killed instead of found in time.
As for Justice Hoggs, she deserves praise for having the courage to say what she did not derogatory remarks or put downs as to what role she did or didn’t have in Court. She truly has the milk of human kindness in her which is greatly lacking in some other people over there. I have seen articles written over here about Judges who made questiononable rulings on a defendant’s time to spend in jail or threw an ‘iffy’ case out but I have never in my life seen anything in writing that ridiculed or said disparaging remarks about a judge who showed the milk of human kindness in their remarks from the bench.

Now however you spin it jo, the attorney general has “ordered” a decision by August the 2nd, we people who are not living on the planet Zog know that decision will be filing, as indicated by the excellent and respected Publico yesterday, page eleven. After all didn’t the sainted lady justice Hogg, say there is no evidence that Madeleine is departed. Have pleasant delusions, remember sweet and fragrant thoughts for the loving duo, favourites of the European Parliament.

Oh dear! I think you’ll have to try a lot harder than that!!!
We would probably still have only a fraction of the necessary signatures for a resolution were it not for the Mcs. It’s a good start, no more than that. Thanks in no small part to them, I suspect. The appropriate charities are sufficiently genuinely interested in finding missing children to have wanted their support for their own campaign. It looks to the public as though the Mcs at least tried to get something positive for other missing children out of their own tragedy, and may well have succeeded.
As for Justice Hogg….like it or lump it, she has, rightly or wrongly, simply reinforced the view of most people that the Mcs had no direct involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance. She may be wrong in her view, but that has undoubtedly been the effect of her statement.
I suspect that’s what you don’t like, which is why you have to spin so hard. Did you ever work for TB…..no, not the eccentric retired solicitor…..the other one? If not, he didn’t know what he was missing!
Should the judge be proved wrong in her opinion, then she will look a real fool. You’ll have to wait for that to happen. May not be too long if the PJ announce soon that charges are to be brought………. What do you think?

Judges have three weeks for conclusions
Pinto Monteiro aims to decide on the follow-up to the PJ’s investigations after the inspectors have sent to the Public Ministry a report about the investigation work carried out since Madeleine’s disappearance.
A report more than damning in the facts, but in which the inspectors, voluntarily, have not wanted to draw conclusions or accusations, leaving to the magistrates the responsibility for deciding what follows.
According to a senior PJ office in the Algarve region, “the absence of conclusions or accusations in the report sent to the Public Ministry should be interpreted as the magistrates being given the responsibility and political power in this case.”
“The PJ have not had the possibilty of conducting the investigation in a calm way….there was interferance and pressure, in particular from the British authorities and their representatives in Portugal,” the same officer accused, stressing that in the United Kingdom, the police officers who had gone to Portugal, “admitted having been under the same pressure.”
The Attorney General Pinto Monteiro has analysed dozens of pages of the PJ’s report and is only waiting for the magistrates’ decision: carry out more work, wait for more evidence or clues, knowing that the investigation cannot purely and simply be archived, contrary to what certain media have claimed.
Now, the magistrates must have the courage to read, understand and analyse our report. It is up to them to decide on what follows and to find out if they have the courage to face the British.” the senior PJ officer concluded
